  • This is a more detailed look at how I overseed my Bahia every year. This is annual maintenance. It’s also the only way to thicken a Bahia lawn and battle weed intrusion. Comment below if I missed something or if you have more questions. Conventional wisdom leads to failure. Don’t follow the herd or you will be disappointed!

    I didn’t mention how pre emergent herbicides can affect your overseed. I’ll go in depth in a video on weed control soon. Here’s a link to a short clip about pre emergents and why they don’t work for me. Check it out!

    I just moved from Maryland to the western Orlando area. I am very particular about my lawn and had the tall rescue varieties in MD. My new home is soded with bahia grass and will need lots of work to get it looking good. This information is very informative and helpful. Thank you.

Thanks a lot great channel keep the videos coming up! 🎉🎉🎉

    Recently bought a house in central FL and I was so disappointed when I came and saw the Bahia. I thought all of Florida had St.Aug and I’d never heard of Bahia. I decided to work with it, fed it with fertilizer, RGS and kelp, it was thick and lush and it looked absolutely gorgeous all my neighbors were asking for tips. Now 22 months later, even though I’m still caring for it the same, it has become so thin - I didn’t realize it needed to be over seeded. It’s funny how Bahia won’t spread or thicken into itself but spread like wildfire into mulch beds.

      @BahiaGrass_Boss  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it’s a different creature. It declines naturally as it gets older. It’s not meant to be a residential lawn, honestly. As pasture grass, it wants to be a foot high and dropping manure-covered seeds on itself all summer. Making it a lawn is a struggle sometimes but pays off in the winter when we mostly leave it be. Good luck!

    I’ve also learned that Bahia is slow to germinate. The exception is Tifquick, it popped in 10 days this year and it is 3” in 30 days with significant daily rainfall. But it is definitely a pasture grass.

    overseeds itself just mulching the seed stalks lol.... at least here in the south

    • @BahiaGrass_Boss
      @BahiaGrass_Boss  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kmain0 if you live in a residential neighborhood, letting it get tall enough to seed itself can be problematic both because of HOAs and because it’s tough enough to mow as-is, let alone when it’s 10” or more in height. Pastures mostly self-seed, true. Lawns not so much.

    I'm curious if you do anything different for late summer early fall overseeding? It's about that time of year and Im thinking about giving it a shot. Also you need a video on fertilizing 😃

    • @BahiaGrass_Boss
      @BahiaGrass_Boss  วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fert video will come. It’ll be short. I don’t do much. lol main thing about overseeding in fall is to try and time it to be EITHER far enough ahead of the cooler weather so that it gets a couple of inches of growth before temps are regularly low (3-4 months, ish) OR do it later so the cooler temps send the seed into dormancy before it sprouts. Dormant seeding will have a lower germination rate but will start working as soon as soil temps are right.

    Thank you for the great info. I live in central Florida and have Bahia grass as well. Question: What do you suggest about dealing with birds eating the new grass seed? Will laying down the thin layer of peat help with that?

    • @BahiaGrass_Boss
      @BahiaGrass_Boss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I have not had a problem with birds but I imagine that “hiding” them with that peat can’t hurt. Also, Bahia seeds are SO tiny I imagine they don’t attract much attention. Great question!Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    Thanks for the info. New to Bahia grass, but found out early on that following the herd wasn't helping me. Grateful to find someone with experience with Bahia. Question: have you tried mixing with annual rye for a cover in balding areas, I've had good success doing this. Thanks again

    • @BahiaGrass_Boss
      @BahiaGrass_Boss  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@garyhorton4619 I have not tried that specifically. I’ll look into it. I have seeded completely failed areas with cool season grasses to get me through the winter and when our summer temps climb, they just cooked. Probably works well for yards farther north than mine. Great tip and thanks for sharing!

    How do you feel about dethatching before overseeding with bahia? I saw that was recommended and it seemed to really tear my lawn up a lot worse than other grasses so should I skip that from now on and overseed only?

    • @BahiaGrass_Boss
      @BahiaGrass_Boss  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      To me it has been counter productive because of how it tears things up, like you say. I did it once and not since. Bahia just doesn’t recover from damage like other grasses do so, to me, I’m working against myself if I do that. Bahia clippings break down pretty readily so I don’t think it’s even really necessary.
