That was a nice easy to understand video. There are too many 20 minute plus videos on TH-cam about Triggers and Gates that go into every specific detail. For you to be able to give a clear explanation in under 4 minutes is great. Keep up the good work.
I tried triggers as gates on my toms, because hard snare hits would sometimes open the tom gates. I put them on the reso heads, as shown in the video. What I found out was, that the ratio between bleed and actual drum hits was more or less exactly the same as on the ambient mic. Just like before, the snare would open the gate, or if I put the threshold higher, it wouldn't open softer tom hits. For me it didn't work. Maybe this is just useful for loud environments on stage and not in general for drums. Or there a couple of tricks to make it work better.
How are you sending the MIDI info all the way to the FOH Mixer? It is being transmitted through Dante or something similar? What does that signal flow look like? Thanks :)
Do you just plug the triggers directly into the snake down the line to FOH? Or are they you generating clicks with the drum machine to send down the line?
I use a powerful compressor to push my Gates I don't use trigger's on my main drumset but I will use trigger's on pearl rytham traveler with Remo double ply mesh heads
Hey man can you make a vid on your tuning process. i understand you tune differently according to the room/venue you are playing in but just in general your processes and tones you are shooting for?! id love it! thanks.
Josh Wireman hey man! I uploaded the first one a couple days ago on my Tuning process. There will be others as well. Enjoy! If you're interested, I do Tuning sessions and lessons via skype!
Adam Snyder yessir! The kick is routed to the Alesis DM5 and directly to the porter and Davies thrown thumper. Just a way to have a clean signal rumbling the thrown for articulation.
The triggers don't patch to the console, only to the gates sidechain input. The mic'd signal routes through the console, then through the gate and return to the console channel.
Great information! Drum triggers are patched directly to the Input of the Stage Rack / Mixing Console / Multi Core or to a Sound Card? It will be great if you could please guide us on triggering gates using Drum Triggers? How does the Side Chaining work?
humayun sd they are patched into the stage rack. The side chain works within the plugin on a channel strip. Within a compressor or a gate plugin, you can designate what you want to be the threshold to open or close the gate..it can be a db threshold, or any other input on the console. Hope that helps!
Hey Jon, since the P&S isn't playing the sound do you feel that the ddrum trigger through a DI box then into the P&D gets you the same thing? Maybe you blend the DM5 through FOH or IEM and that is why you use it. I actually took your suggestion in this video and tried a Roland trigger / DI / P&D combo and it seemed to work decent. I did have to back off the input level halfway through the set because it was starting to "light up." I wonder if my configuration is why?
@@iplaywithsticks6194 I fixed it to read P&D (Porter and Davies) seat/amp. It was a typo, in part because I've written P&S a few times for other reasons unrelated to drumming.
how...where and what started you to learn all this and who taught you? also how did you finally get hooked up with such a big performance tour hand gig? (if i worded that correctly)
Brock Johnson I learned a lot by playing in bands and helping set up our whole stage and audio package, recording in the studio, then I got a degree in music production and music business. So experience plus a formal degree has really helped me. I did an interview on a podcast called "behind he kit" where I talk about all of that stuff in detail. You should check that out!
Just Drew buuuuuut they are mic'd up you can even see the mics in this video. a gates job is to open and close the signal to a mic, not replace the sound.
allthingsawesome2 yeah man I don’t even see the mics, those just look like triggers to me, I trigger my kicks with a Roland rt30k so that’s just what I’m thinking when I see it. Thanks for the info 🤙🏻

Excellent job! Love seeing how the big guys do it!
Ordered a set today for my kit. Can’t wait to try them out!!
Can we see how you connected your mics to your triggers and what module you using and how to use it.

Thanks. Cool. Can you make a part two where you show how to plug them into the hardware and what hardware you use ?
Nice video just would like to see a video were you explain the wiring process
Yes please
it would be great to hear the kit through the board with and without the gates.
Great explanation of gate. Your videos are great! I'm gonna hire you some day soon.
Hey, thanks for the video. For gate side chain, are your DDrums triggers XLR out going straight into the stage box or into a DI first ? Thanks
Keen to know also
Hey there! do you need to mute or partly-mute the drumms for correct trigger function ? thx
How are you sending the MIDI info all the way to the FOH Mixer? It is being transmitted through Dante or something similar? What does that signal flow look like? Thanks :)
Great video how is the triggers talking to the mixer
it's actually genius to put a trigger on the bottom side - never didnt thought about it
Do you just plug the triggers directly into the snake down the line to FOH? Or are they you generating clicks with the drum machine to send down the line?
Brian Russ they are patched right in line to FOH
Thank you, Jon! Love it! Looking forward to trying this out! Also, what mic are you using on the toms?
At the end, Is that Craig over there on Riley’s kit? Awesome content man.
Thanks for the review! What could you say about TrigMic Laser Pick?
Nothing..
Do you think these kick triggers will work with the EMAD bass drum heads?
I use a powerful compressor to push my Gates I don't use trigger's on my main drumset but I will use trigger's on pearl rytham traveler with Remo double ply mesh heads
Did Rich Redmond use trigger to triggering a sound?
Very interesting and informative, thanks very much for taking the time to share your knowledge.
Those are audio technica AE2500's I believe.
Pretty cool videos and look on what goes on backstage.
Great demonstration! You've earned yourself a sub!
Music Serpent haha! Thanks for checking it out!

Awesome video! How are the triggers that are strictly for side chain connected into the console at front of house to trigger the gates?
Adam Snyder yessir! The kick is routed to the Alesis DM5 and directly to the porter and Davies thrown thumper. Just a way to have a clean signal rumbling the thrown for articulation.

What is 'P&S'?

how do you set up the side chain?
Explained perfectly. Subbed!
2:37 it says raskal flats... why? tour with them at the time i assume orrr..?
How are you loading the samples from the DM5? Are you triggering it from software in a laptop or from samples loaded into the module directly?
Volentry we just use the stock samples within the module. They are simply for feel on the porter and Davies.
Great job.
what is this instagram again? Johny pledge? fledge?
Really don’t get this. Help!!!
Why two bass drum triggers?
one is likely going to the throne and the other out front to the board
I believe he said one was for controlling/opening gate and other was for throne, right.
Thanks sir.....
Sup Jon Hull!
What? Lol
Sad to see a collectors series triggered up..
Just Drew did you not watch the video?
Gates bro. not triggers.
allthingsawesome2 he literally said there are triggers on it, they are triggered 100%. Don’t matter what you call it. They aren’t mic’d
Just Drew buuuuuut they are mic'd up you can even see the mics in this video. a gates job is to open and close the signal to a mic, not replace the sound.
the only things that is "triggered" is the feed on his kick to his throne thumper/possibly IEM's
