Let's see .... am about to be seventy - nine soon and one recalls to do with key signature sharps / flats progressions related to a circle was about fifty - eight years ago where in my teacher taught a pneumonic and all this made an exam very doable . Because I always intended to return to all this and never could quite get to it it's left me with a suspended feeling . A circle of fifths seems to supply a sense of comfort and potential .
Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle! I've been teaching myself piano for a year now and have the circle of fifth hanging on "Piano Board" that I hang piano charts on. Yet it took me this long to realize the Father Charles Goes Down and Ends Battle. Yes, he does! I could see the numbers for the sharps and flats but never understood how you know which sharps, which flats. Now I know. This tutorial is priceless and I thank you for it. Every Good Boy Does Fine except when he falls down on his FACE. I learned that 30 years ago when I took guitar lessons (for three weeks). But I wish I had learned piano first, because I am only now understanding what makes up scales, chords, their relationships, inversions, octaves, etc. I never really practiced much guitar and I noticed over time what chords go together by just trying to learn songs. G-C-D ? Yep, but why? Dunno, Now I do. Thanks again.
Thank you! Very helpful, will have to watch again without distractions. I’m my many, many, many year as a musician this was not explained to me in the early years . Thank you!
Unbelievable, I just learned in a few minutes things that I had tried to understand for last 20 years and never did. Where have you been all this time? Exceptional teaching skills.
Brenda, thank you so much for this explanation. I’m an old guy, trying to add some theory to my basic music skills. It’s one of those things that is so complicated when first experienced but really not so, at all! Your method of explanation made it come to life for me. Simply fantastic!
You are such a good and patient teacher. I always do not understand this CIRCLE OF FIFTHS. I tried hard to memorize them, but now I see if there is a better way to play on piano without look at the Chart.
Brenda, just happened on your videos while looking for "pianist-vocal & cruise work" (!) You are just THE best,..thank you!!! Your Circle of Fifths video reminded me of my wonderful experience in college, - the late jazz piano professor st UT in Tampa,, Robert McCarr: He was always playing "All The Things You are" by Jerome Kern, and the lovely jazz changes, while we all strolled into class every other day. Got our attention beautifully to explain the great composers, from Mozart, Chopin, Gershwin to Kern, etc. ALL followed the (chord) changes BACKWARDS around the circle of fifths... He emphadized "simply remember It as ("Gems") or BEADS: With C &F - or C & G st the top of the circle... i.e, C,F, BEADG (All flats) then continuing backwards, BEADG,C- for the sharp keys. Prof. McCarr said each composer's tune had memorable ways of stalling the resolutions by inserting "other" or passing chords, which JUST MADE THE TUNE A HIT - and different from all the rest. I joined the college class after singing with great bands in country club gigs and wanting to learn how to accompany singers, such as myself. I have SO Much admiration and gratitude for the creative genius that gave us this BEAUTIFUL,mathematical gift. Thank you BRENDA, for explaining it all in yet another way
Great video. It's super helpful knowing this stuff when it comes to reading music. If I see three sharps, I know it's just an extra sharp from the last key signature, so now my brain immediately switches C and F sharps and it's about 1 new sharp. Helps to make sense of things as I go down the rabid hole into more complicated time signatures. 💯💯.
(More to comment) Oh yes, truly a gift from God. PURE AND SIMPLE! If you are a scientist, you learn, like Einstein did, the universe is "precisely created, and mathematically perfect to a point beyond where man can calculate...: and so, it seems, God created music similarly, with an emotional beauty in the hands of - say pianist Bill Evans ' - to go directly into our souls, bypassing the thinking brain completely.
playing with this on me guitar, I come to this discovery. Im starting on A (on low strings cause its in the middle for me) and Im going up in 5ths I play the A to A diatonic scale it contains the two keys with those 4 note scales(WWH each key). A and E. Now just follow the 6 note whole tone scale for each 8 note octave diatonic scale which has the two keys. Next would be B and F# playing B to B then keep going with that pattern till you get to the flat 7 of the A which will be G to G containing the keys G and D then go back to the first low A. Dont forget theres only 12 notes so if you lost the other 6 note whole tone scale you will find it a half step up or down! For more fun, when you get to the end of the first 4 note scale go to the sharp 5 down to the 5 then to the 3 and back up to the 4th!
The left/right balance of the audio seems very off. When I take off my left side of my headphones your voice COMPLETELY disappears yet I still hear the piano through the right
Circle of fifths is an organization of 12 different tonal centers in numerical order by sharps and flats. Clockwise for sharps and counterclockwise for flats. They just happen to be a fifth apart
There is actually more to it than them happening to be a fifth apart. It is all tied into the harmonic overtone system, which is scientifically based. It’s super interesting (albeit nerdy) stuff.
From C to F is moving UP a 4th or DOWN a 5th. C D E F up a 4th, C B A G F down a 5th. 5ths and 4ths are the same thing inverted. It’s one of the cool things about western music.
I think I like to think up boys feed cats to the 7 sharps then down dogs get cats for the seven flats, that way you only have 4 sharps or flats to count down or up after that. Interesting each note allows 7 keys, say you start on the G note and you think of it as the seventh degree of key of Ab you keep it up and get the Eb and its the 3rd degree continuing there is the sixth degree on the Bb and second degree on the F 5th degree on the C and the 1st on the G 4th on the D then you have to change to Ab then you have the pattern again starting on the seventh degree of the A with the 4 # s... I guess its the flip of the second whole tone scale though thats 6 notes the seven must borrow one from the other half maybe its the odd one thats minor7b5? Also it is a diatonic progression. The pattern is 7/m7b5 - 3/m-6/m-2/m-5/7-1/M-4/M 7362514 - its a song, hmmm 8675309

People ask why the 3 at the bottom of the circle can have 2 names, and the question is really why the others don't. And the answer is that you can't have more than 7 #s or flats, because there are only 7 letter names:-).

Why is it called a fifth when it is seven half steps? Fifth should mean five, right? What am I missing?
It’s called a perfect fifth, as it’s the first 5 notes of the major scale. Does that make sense?
It's 5 letter names:. CDEFG.
Why isn’t A flat also G sharp?
They are - we don’t tend to say the key of G# because it would have 8 #s.
People ask why the 3 at the bottom of the circle can have 2 names, and the question is really why the others don't. And the answer is that you can't have more than 7 #s or flats, because there are only 7 letter names:-).
Why is there no audio?
There's audio - maybe yours got turned off?
I hear her just fine
Another mnemonic with a touch of drama: Father Christmas Got Dad An Electric Blanket; Blanket Exploded And Dad Got Burned 😄
Why has no one explained it this way 😳
Stick around - this is what I do here!
