Essentially it was over the troubles in northern ireland and a group which included kevin boland who you see at the end being carried out believed Taoisech Jack Lynch wasn't doing enough to help catholics being oppressed in ulster.
Boland and co wanted to stage a symbolic invasion of the north to raise awareness and assist the Catholic community. That could have triggered all out civil war in the north and beyond with dire consequences for the island.

I knew Kevin Boland in late 80s and early 90s. I was a socialist republican but i personally liked him.
