    I'm a health care worker and recently an orchid farmer donated orchids to my hospital as a thank you gift during the corona-virus outbreak. I was worried i wouldn't be able to take care of my orchid and it would die but Shirley is so great at teaching and explaining the basics. Thank you so much for this video I hope my orchid lives a long happy life with me

    12 minutes on everything you know about orchids! I always thought it was the hardest plant to maintain, but i now know it's due to how different it is to all other plants. Here's to a hopeful 3rd chance at keeping my newest Orchid plant alive ... if my loss goes from 2 of 3 to 3 of 3, I'll stick with my vegetables and succulents :)

    Thank you so much Shirley, I had purchased 2 orchids plants about 5 weeks ago and noticed one of them had a couple of leaves turning yellow. I was blessed to find you when searching for a video, so I followed your steps to repot and noticed that the plant had her roots in a little cup with dirt. You mentioned they don’t grow in dirt but on branches, so I cleaned her up, and looking forward to her thriving! God bless, and have a very happy Christmas!

      I see you agreed with V Ashley.

    Thank you for the video. I think I have overwatered my my three orchids and would like to repot them to stop potential root rot. The leaves are starting to look a little dehydrated (not all of them, mostly the older ones). Problem is, two of the three orchids have started growing keikis! There's proper leaves on the flower spike, not just secondary spikes. I want to save the mother plants but also the babies! What do I do? :(
    Is it safe for the mother plant and the keikis to repot them now? Keikis take time to grow and I don't think the mother can pull through for this long. But also I've read that repotting while in bloom can make flowers fade faster. My orchids aren't blooming at the moment so I don't care about the flowers but I just don't want to endanger the keikis... I am so insecure when it comes to orchids.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mag, I am happy you found my video helpful. The keikis need to have a vigorous root system, at least 1 inch long before you transplant it. Don't worry if it doesn't survive. Gardening is a learning experience. Every "seeming" fail will make you a better gardener. It's a no no to remove old, decomposed medium from the pot you are going to repot and let it fall with your fresh medium.... asking for trouble as there could be diseases, fungus or bugs lurking in that old medium. Also the removing of dry roots should not be allowed to be dumped in or near the fresh new medium. The old medium along with the old dry roots should removed onto a paper, and discarded. You wish to keep your new fresh medium as healthy as you can and away from the old.

      @EdenMakers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@debramcleod5050 Hi Debra I agree with Juliette and Over the Moon, (although I removed that persons comment for troll activity on my videos). You need to use fresh bark, (as explained in video) and keep it away from the old bark.
      All proper protocol is explained in detail in the video including disinfecting the plants when needed.
      My challenge was that I had this tiny tub to do my demonstration and had nowhere to discard the old bark. I did leave it in front of the new pile of bark and did not pull from it when repotting. In hindsight, I should have clarified, "Make sure to keep the old and new mix away from each other."
      I still stand behind my information. It is solid and has been successful in 20 years as a horticulture professional. There are a lot of things that are not mentioned in videos that are done at the spur of the moment. It's just difficult to think of every detail when you are teaching extemporaneously. That is why these comments are useful, to bring up these details and clarify, refute, or be corrected. I'm all for fruitful conversation and I have no problem accepting correction!
      This person though, is commenting about how much they "hate" that my videos are popular, and there just in no place for that on my channel. My purpose is to build people up and teach them techniques that will make them successful. That is why I reply to 100% of all comments. Thank you for your time reading my comment. This is a great alert for me to be extra vigilent of my visuals as much as what I actually say to do.

    It is a mistake to make blanket statements like sphagnum holds too much moisture and is going to drown your plant. It is going to be entirely dependent on climate whether or not it is a good choice for a medium. In a temperate climate, like NJ or NY, it might be a problem, especially in winter. For growers in hot regions, like myself in FL or those in AZ or southern CA, sphagnum is not an issue. Down here, bark (especially new bark) can go bone dry in a single day and even sphagnum dries in just a few days. I can grow Phals in bark but they require near daily watering in the summer, they grow a whole lot better in sphagnum.

      Thank you Michael McCarthy, for your info. I live in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area and I agree with you on the moss vs bark. I have to put mine in moss because I would be watering constantly otherwise! But I do love this video!

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Michael McCarthy I should have made It clear That I was referring to indoor orchids, Which is where most people across the country keep their moth orchids year round.
      The number one reason most plants die is from overwatering.
      When orchids are overwatered and have moss As the planting media, they are more likely to experience root rot.
      Indoor conditions for orchids are generally consistent throughout the country no matter what the climate is outdoors. This is why I can make a general statement. Thanks for reading

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nancy Mumpton Hi Nancy thank you for watching and commenting!
      I replied again to Michael to clarify that I am referring to indoor orchid care.
      It does not matter where you live or your outdoor climate, Indoor conditions are generally consistent throughout the country. This is why I can make a general statement. Overwatering is the number one killer of plants. Moss retains more water than bark and can lead to root rot much quicker.
      Thank you once again
