lol Yamaguchi prefers Apocalypse Zero to his later more "mature" stuff. drop the "ughhh it's mind rotting trash" nonsense; this manga is genuinely amazingly good. the grossout comedy is well drawn and funny, the serious stuff is really well done and basically a more lighthearted fantastical version of Shigurui. the mix of earnest drama and silly shit is pure shonen, just taken to the next level; everything from Kinnikuman to Dragon Ball went from silly to serious. it's obviously Kill la Kill's biggest influence and does have thematic depth; it's about reframing nationalistic & fascistic aesthetics & philosophies for a good cause; the unending self-sacrificial drive of a samurai dedicated to doing good as opposed to masochistically serving a corrupt lord or master. it's an optimistic version of Shigurui; Kakugo is Gennosuke if he DID manage to escape his coding and become a legitimately good person, directing his resolve towards something that helps those in need as opposed to enforcing the will and undeserved power of tyrants.
the "ughh it's mind rotting trash" nonsense is so low IQ and shallow tbh. it's on par with calling stuff edgy. this manga and other anime and manga are misunderstood partly because of dumbass online reviewers that nobody should be listening to when it comes to anime and manga imo. it's really a great manga and it's funny too. you gotta watch and read these things yourself. and its nice to see someone recognizing the obvious point that gennosuke is genuinely a terrible person. i don't get how anybody can read all or most of shigurui and come out favoring gennosuke over irako. i mean the manga itself says that they(gennosuke included) did what they did to irako partly because they were jealous of him.
he's someone who would have good values as an individual but refuses to allow himself to be an individual for "respecting my sensei, respecting tha freakin samurai code" reasons. it's a really relatable theme cuz I know so many people who would be amazing if they didn't follow constructs of how people in their group "should" act or that they "need" to share the values of and look up to "respected old timers" even when they clearly suck. you can easily see how this is relevant to the modern world with not one manga author daring to dunk on Nobuhiro Watsuki who was literally distributing mountains of child porn. hell the same thing applies to Kakugo; the old critics who say it's artless trash are Kogan. younger people who like it but still feel they HAVE to say it's "objectively mindless trash" cuz going against decades of critics saying that would rock the boat and upset fandom cohesion too much are Gennosuke. @@nanashi384
Absolutely one of my all time favorite manga, along with HNK, the original Devilman, Berserk, and Hajime No Ippo. I understand why people hate it, but I don’t care, it’s so god damn entertaining and awesome.
How dare you call this trash, this is better than most stuff that’s popular nowadays. If you look past the gore and violence, it’s actually a well thought out love letter to showa era tokusatsu heroes
0:45 1966* Could add a correction. Not much danger of people believing Yamaguchi was born 2 years after the serialization of this manga though. P.S. I really enjoy your channel P.P.S. Are you waiting for Kengan Omega to end before covering Kengan Asura/Kengan Asura Zero/Kengan Omega?
There's something to be said for how, as messed up as this manga can be, it's at least trying to tackle Japan's fascist history and the generational trauma that came from it. Is it doing it in any way that's particularly nuanced or tasteful? Fuck no, but it's at least trying and doing so in the most explicit ways imaginable, and it gets some respect from me for even trying.
@@THEMANGALOG Honestly you can absolutely see how later works by the same mangaka refine the template set by Kakugo and become these increasingly dire but genuinely profound examinations of Japanese imperialism and masculinity, works that directly ask the question of "what does it even mean to be Japanese, and what *should* it mean" without having easy answers.
cringe comment, the story is actually incredibly straightforward and it doesn't need to attempt nuances at criticising the country's history as that's not its point
@@slyapbg The ending involves our protagonist murdering a thinly veiled caricature of Shiro Ishii for his crimes against humanity and 90% of Kakugo's aesthetics (particularly the uniforms) are inspired by Yamaguchi's perverse fascination with Imperial Japan, what are you *going on about?*
I wonder if both are intentional. If you're gonna potentially shock people with political commentary anyway, might as well put it in the already shocking-content manga yknow?
I remember watching thr anime as a kid and thinking it was absolutely hilarious. Ill have to add it to my backlog, as I didnt read manga much at the time.
I heard this described as what if Garth Ennis wrote a Kamen Rider parody, and while that’s not completely accurate considering it’s still pretty earnest, it does feel like that at times. Some of the more ludicrous bits do feel more like dry, black comedy than just being completely stupid, but that being said there are still obvious problems with the plot
No one needs to read a comic at all. Writers wanna write about things that resonate with em, even if its for laughs or whatever. S'why a variety of media is nice. If you're constantly gonna be scared of by oh no THEMES you're gonna be on a diet of slop for years.
@@oshkeet I honestly prefer a lighthearted work like this much more than comics like Vinland Saga that try to push unsolicited propaganda into a story that should be about Vikings

I’m not gonna lie Apocalypse zero is basically probably one of the most crazy anime/manga that I ever saw like it’s basically a brutal messed up version of kamen rider
Sometimes, all you really need is garbage content that doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is, that kind of earnestness is worth treasuring even if it's silly garbage brain sludge
it's not garbage anymore than dragon ball or kinnikuman. it's both hilariously low brow and thoughtful; peak shonen manga. reread it and think of it in terms of samurai drive & resolve normally used to serve a corrupt lord & master being directed towards doing good, of reframing undeniably aesthetically appealing fascistic aesthetics for a humanist cause, and it'll all click. it's still full of grossout comedy but hell, Dragon Ball started out as poop and sex jokes and became legitimately epic.
This isn’t garbage though, just because something is gory, violent, and has an out there story and art style. Doesn’t mean that it’s trash. Save that for manga that’s uninspired and follows the same boring cliche’s and tropes. Apocalypse Zero actually has an earnestness to it’s characters and the team behind it put a lot of soul and care into it. You can see that with the little excerpts that the author and assistants would leave at the end of each volume. You guys are just wusses with no taste
@@RaymondoPerson I wouldn't go that far, but yeah things can simultaneously have downright ridiculous bits and legit commentary, even if the precise mixing and execution of that stuff can be awkward.
