there's something very cool about seeing what looks sort of like QR codes over the black and white Kaiju art. It looks almost like black and white footage but doing modern streaming artifacting. Like the Kaiju are not supposed to be allowed to get captured on film and this is the best that could work I wish you luck in the game and development, subbed

I admit, when the algorithm showed me a video with this title I expected a breathy 20 something talking about how they loved godzilla dubs as a kid. Instead I got a well edited, moving video about an adult finding the magic again. I'm excited to see how this project goes, I love kaiju and card games so much and I love seeing people put their passion into a project that connects to them even if they don't have all the words to articulate how it connects.

Also maybe look into earthborne rangers for how they are making a card game without the usage of plastics and more sustainable materials. I know production is a long ways away, but seeing different options can't hurt?

Oh that is just fantabulous. Not that I’ve ever been specifically into Kaiju fiction, but this does peak my interest, what with the cute art style and whatnots. Feels like everyone gets the idea of creating their own card game at one point or another, so all the patience to you. Would love to learn what the rules are like; style or not, it’s those that make it a game, after all. And I’ll sit back and bask in the vicarious enjoyment of watching the process unfold. :^)

Wow this is what i aspire to do with my life. Doing something i enjoy. Im studying Computer science and i would love to do something related to games or designing but i know how oversaturated the market it so i have been depressed about that for a while but seeing this motivated me. Even in your busy life with kids and a partner you still set aside some time to do what you enjoy. Im so happy to be here and i thank MonsterGarden for introducing this to me. I would love to help with ideas or anything in the future on like a discord or whatever. Also this could easily be made into a digital card game as well, since you virtually do the art already.
This is so sick! I love seeing creative processes like this. This isn’t related to the product itself, and I know this is super early into the channel, but I do want to let you know that I think the music is just a smidge too loud. The choice of music is superb-it really helps the vibe of the video (reminds me of something like the Hyrule Journals video essays)-but at times it was a little hard to hear your voice. Even still, outstanding video! I’m really curious about the pixel art stuff going on, haha. Some input I’ll share from a game design perspective: don’t look to Magic for inspiration, haha. Some of the best card games I’ve played (both mechanically and visually) have very narrow-focused design philosophies, whereas Magic’s is super broad. Magic is constantly adding new cards, new types of cards, collaborations, alternate versions, etc. Instead, look to something like Radlands, a solid little game that emulates the feel of a TCG but uses a singular deck. I love that game for a few reasons, not the least of which is its super clear and consistent design language (everything is always in the same spot, and concepts are communicated through symbology rather than pure text). A good example of the Radlands team and their design philosophy is the expansion they released this year. As an avid board gamer, I hate tricking out the base version of a game or getting the deluxe version, only for an expansion to be released that isn’t the same quality or doesn’t fit in the original box. Roxley Games released two versions of the expansion corresponding to the version of the game you had, and rather than adding more character cards, they added more camp cards so that the camp deck was as big as the people deck. This meant it fit in the original box, and they had the unique opportunity to change or hotfix some of the camps that didn’t fit as well with the game anymore. Also, something that always tickled me about physical card games in particular is the creative things you can do with a constrained medium. Star Wars: The Deckbuilding Game isn’t perfect, but I adore how the cards have upside-down information that’s only valuable to the person who can read it, or how Lorcana uses the backs of the cards as mana. Limitation breeds creativity, I guess! I’ve subscribed, and I can’t wait to see where this project goes. Good luck!

I would love to see mutation cards that enhances the monsters. It would be cool to see different combinations to the kaiju’s abilities, and make it a longer playable format for the various levels upon this little pitch, love the work🫶

Thanks! There actually is a very similar mechanic using locations or ‘battlegrounds’ which give buffs/debuffs to different Origin Kaiju. I’ll explain in a video soon. ☺️
Looks interesting! Not sure what ur system is going to be but I’d suggest maybe making something akin to edh/commander in the sense that you have 1 Kaiju to summon and protect/bolster against ur opponents own. Means your kaiju is always the focus and the deck is full of fodder and food for the kaiju (people, cults, buildings or nuclear waste depending on origin) just like in the movies. Leads to strong personification of the player as well pet cards.

I’m aiming for the deck to be as much as possible about variants of Kaiju and less about superfluous cards like the energy/trainer type stuff you get with Pokemon. ATM the idea is that cards will be either Kaiju or locations. Locations give buffs debuffs to different Kaiju. But I won’t explain here - I’ll leave that to the next video. If this was turned into a game on steam I would love to play that, sane goes for the whole Internet I think. Off of that it could be turned into a massive franchise if it all goes right
i feel like the fact that your son is interested in pokemon not only shaped the project into card form, the whole way of desgning pokemon creatures is very essential to the way you will be designing kaijus (for example, mashing existing animals into those creatures). At first i was afraid cuz theres nothing to base those kaijus on beside the movies (unlike in football cards cuz there are irl people doin the sport or fantasy cards cuz there are in game universes with previously designed worlds) but then i remembered that there are 9 or smth generations of pokemon creatures. Maybe when you ll be out of ideas or just want to learn smth you could research the process of creating pokemon creatures/cards? Also i like that the drawings always contain two parts -> the base (city, forest) and the creature standing on it. Thats a form which you can elaborate and experiment with but also the form in which you express what kaijuu is (you certainly understand the thing and can convey that to a person which never was into the genre -> me)
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, Pokémon are certainly connected. Interestingly the whole idea of Pokemon originally came from Ultraman, so there’s a real connection. I’ll def expand on the cards in a similar way to how Pokemon generations work if the first lot work well. It’s as much about the world building exercise as the card game. And you’re right about the locations. They are actually integral… I’ll explain more on that soon. ☺️
I also grew up in the middle of nowhere with terrible internet. Such a posting thing in the modern era, lol. Very interested to see where this goes! (Also monster garden sent me here! )

Very cool! Regarding deck card amount, Pokémon tcg poket gets away with minimizing the deck size down to 20 cards. There are design tricks to getting a deck size smaller.

If the game is combat based perhaps it could have something similar to mtg planeswalkers. A city card that gives buffs to your kaiju and opponent's kaiju can attack instead of you.

Have you considered integrating a resource system? Something akin to Pokémon’s energy or Magic’s colour wheel. I think it’s a really good way to flavour and distinguish the cards, both in gameplay and storytelling. Magic of course, famously has its 5 colours. Even within the constraints of White, Blue, Black, Red and Green, there is so much room for expression and identity in Magic’s card design, it’s really something special when the colours combine together to tell a bigger story. What about splitting the Kaiju by their origin, some certain “elements” if you will, come to mind. You can have Technology, Radiation, Nature, and Otherworldly as the four Colours or elements for the game. Cards that scream Mechagodzilla and Ultraman would definitely be “Technology” Your titular Giant Ooze or Godzilla style creature could be “Radiation” Kaiju that seem to just be massive beasts, your Mothra and Giant T-rex, those would definitely be “Nature” And lastly; the weirder and more unexplainable, alien-like or even deific creatures could be “Otherworldly”. Creatures like Gigan or even Cthulhu come to mind. It could get very interesting if you choose to have certain monsters represent multiple identities simultaneously, that would be wicked. This is just an idea that comes to mind as I look at your wonderful art, I’m definitely here for the ride!
You’re spot on. Very close to what I’m actually planning. There are 7 Origins and each Kaiju confirm to this. The pixelated icons at the beginning of the video represent each origin. I’ll be doing a video on it soon. ✌🏻
Check out the board game "The Creature That Ate Sheboygan." It's a two player kaiju war game from the 70's. Probably not where you're headed but it's ~ inspiration ~ possibly.

I would love to see mutation cards that enhances the monsters. It would be cool to see different combinations to the kaiju’s abilities, and make it a longer playable format for the various levels upon this little pitch, love the work🫶

It would be cool if there were biome cards that powered up certain kaiju, but even without that idea, i can tell this has potential
Thanks! There actually is a very similar mechanic using locations or ‘battlegrounds’ which give buffs/debuffs to different Origin Kaiju. I’ll explain in a video soon. ☺️
Looks interesting! Not sure what ur system is going to be but I’d suggest maybe making something akin to edh/commander in the sense that you have 1 Kaiju to summon and protect/bolster against ur opponents own. Means your kaiju is always the focus and the deck is full of fodder and food for the kaiju (people, cults, buildings or nuclear waste depending on origin) just like in the movies. Leads to strong personification of the player as well pet cards.

I’m aiming for the deck to be as much as possible about variants of Kaiju and less about superfluous cards like the energy/trainer type stuff you get with Pokemon. ATM the idea is that cards will be either Kaiju or locations. Locations give buffs debuffs to different Kaiju. But I won’t explain here - I’ll leave that to the next video. i feel like the fact that your son is interested in pokemon not only shaped the project into card form, the whole way of desgning pokemon creatures is very essential to the way you will be designing kaijus (for example, mashing existing animals into those creatures). At first i was afraid cuz theres nothing to base those kaijus on beside the movies (unlike in football cards cuz there are irl people doin the sport or fantasy cards cuz there are in game universes with previously designed worlds) but then i remembered that there are 9 or smth generations of pokemon creatures. Maybe when you ll be out of ideas or just want to learn smth you could research the process of creating pokemon creatures/cards? Also i like that the drawings always contain two parts -> the base (city, forest) and the creature standing on it. Thats a form which you can elaborate and experiment with but also the form in which you express what kaijuu is (you certainly understand the thing and can convey that to a person which never was into the genre -> me)
Thanks for the comment. Yeah, Pokémon are certainly connected. Interestingly the whole idea of Pokemon originally came from Ultraman, so there’s a real connection. I’ll def expand on the cards in a similar way to how Pokemon generations work if the first lot work well. It’s as much about the world building exercise as the card game. And you’re right about the locations. They are actually integral… I’ll explain more on that soon. ☺️
I also grew up in the middle of nowhere with terrible internet. Such a posting thing in the modern era, lol.

Very cool! Regarding deck card amount, Pokémon tcg poket gets away with minimizing the deck size down to 20 cards.
There are design tricks to getting a deck size smaller.

If the game is combat based perhaps it could have something similar to mtg planeswalkers. A city card that gives buffs to your kaiju and opponent's kaiju can attack instead of you.

Have you considered integrating a resource system? Something akin to Pokémon’s energy or Magic’s colour wheel. I think it’s a really good way to flavour and distinguish the cards, both in gameplay and storytelling.
Magic of course, famously has its 5 colours. Even within the constraints of White, Blue, Black, Red and Green, there is so much room for expression and identity in Magic’s card design, it’s really something special when the colours combine together to tell a bigger story.
What about splitting the Kaiju by their origin, some certain “elements” if you will, come to mind.
You can have Technology, Radiation, Nature, and Otherworldly as the four Colours or elements for the game.
Cards that scream Mechagodzilla and Ultraman would definitely be “Technology”
Your titular Giant Ooze or Godzilla style creature could be “Radiation”
Kaiju that seem to just be massive beasts, your Mothra and Giant T-rex, those would definitely be “Nature”
And lastly; the weirder and more unexplainable, alien-like or even deific creatures could be “Otherworldly”. Creatures like Gigan or even Cthulhu come to mind.
It could get very interesting if you choose to have certain monsters represent multiple identities simultaneously, that would be wicked.
This is just an idea that comes to mind as I look at your wonderful art, I’m definitely here for the ride!
You’re spot on. Very close to what I’m actually planning. There are 7 Origins and each Kaiju confirm to this. The pixelated icons at the beginning of the video represent each origin. I’ll be doing a video on it soon. ✌🏻

Check out the board game "The Creature That Ate Sheboygan." It's a two player kaiju war game from the 70's. Probably not where you're headed but it's ~ inspiration ~ possibly.
