The obsession with 'time' is actually quite a westernised concept. Other cultures deemed socially / economically backward by the western world are not so fascinated with it as we are.
I've had family working in parts of the world (Yemen/Afghanistan/Iraq) where most of the people can't even be exact about their age, what date it is, etc. It's a foreign and bewildering concept to these people as to why the western world is so transfixed and reliant upon focusing and recording the passing of time.
Pretty interesting, the 'trews' today reminded me of this so I thought if share :)

Gabriela Doran It is like that in many parts of Africa, as well. People count their age from the seasons, like how many winters or springs they have seen. They are never sure how old they are nor do they care. They find our concern with ageing amusing, at best. People from portuguese speaking african countries who move to Europe often have a hard time understanding exactly what is the point of wearing a wristwatch.

Our "obsession" with measuring time is down to us having a highly diverse social economic environment where people need to be somewhere and do something at a specific time, I am sure if your on a hospital bed and your surgeon turns up late banging on about how they do things in Africa while your heart pumps its last you would be pretty pissed

I didn't expect him to read it as so much gets posted, so really glad you brought it to his attention, it's a great read and pertinent to the journey him, you and many others seem to be on. Time
It’s a funny old thing, a contradiction in terms
Dual natured like the people it so concerns
Can be friend or foe; a gift or a curse
Ally or enemy; ambulance or hearse
Not always been there; an invention of sorts
It withers, bends, decays and distorts
Yet age can show beauty, wisdom and strength
It’s bleedin’ essential for discussions at length
A revealer of truth; eventually it seems
Both destroyer and the fulfiller of dreams

You can't expect someone to never say anything hurtful in anger. Unless you expect people to resemble robots.
Anyway, a remark of that kind can be justified. It has a useful function of discharging pent-up annoyance, or getting recompense for hurt feelings.
These things can quite easily be forgotten a minute after they happen. They don't necessarily have any deep significance, it's just a way of dealing with the needs of the moment.
Sometimes when I issue a remark like that, I've got to the point where I'm so in control of my emotions that I know what I'm about to do and why I'm doing it and I ask myself "is this the right thing to do?" and sometimes the answer is "yes". So it's not always a hijack.
Sometimes it's right to let anger (frustration, irritation, etc.) have its way.

3:06 Okay, here 's a tip for you young bucks, If you argue with your partner, never say hurtful things! She will never forget, you will never be able to undo it. Many relationships end over this. If you get mad and you're worried about what you might say, just walk away. You're probably arguing over 'nothing' anyway.

I often found myself thinking about this topic, changing my opinions a couple times the deeper i thought about it.
At first i thought to much on human interpretation of time, which broke down to 24 hours a day/night. Trying to think larger, time has and is always around, its linear and gravity plays a big part, as well as axis spin which i guess would be effected by gravity. The Earths mass within the fabric of space creating gravity an having an effect on spin would produce the earth having days and nights, from a starting point,we can measure how long it takes for the earth to rotate then breaking it down from there to make it more manageable in days, hours, minutes etc.
So, time is basically a measurement and not an illusion, as the definition of illusion would have one believe something isn't as it appears, when in fact it is. Now time is relative as it'll be a different time for me then you, hence time zones. Think larger and other planets with varying masses and spins etc would effect time differently from one galaxy to the next. When we do start to space travel, we'll neex alot of clocks haha :)

    • @davidjones8043
      @davidjones8043 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly it's relative and not illusory. Also intimately linked with gravity. But no matter what, on any planet any where you'll eventually get old. No escaping aging. That happens when time passes. Therefore real. Even inanimate objects age and decay. Simple stuff. Kinda crazy it's gotten so cliche to question these things, assuming it's "deep".

Quantum probabilities of frigidness! that's great. and "idiot wind" seems to be everywhere ha ha. Time is infinite and we can't grasp the depth of it, I love this review with Blindboy he is very intelligent and sweet, I love that beautiful accent he has, I could listen to him all day.. And you are and lovely and frikin funny ,as usual, Russell. It cracks me up that we earthlings think we can figure everything out about the Universe and time, we know so very little, but it's a good thing to keep asking the the questions "Why" and "How" when finally get to use 100% of our brains, then we will know all the answers. dun dun dun, (I miss you doing the intro.)

    • @briancito7
      @briancito7 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Strange how some people like our Irish accent and some of us are a bit embarrassed by it and upset when imitated! There are SO many Irish accents. Whatever accent is being used we are not going to crack this question of time very easily and certainly not in 7 minutes. But great stuff. Couldn't miss it

    • @davidnoquet7466
      @davidnoquet7466 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

They have calculated the power of the brain and it's storage capability. The good news is we have enough space to store all the knowledge from the universe, the trouble is we will not live long enough to actually succeed in doing so. The probability of any living entity succeeding is highly unlikely.

Another aspect of this is that it sometimes takes time to get over things. For instance, I haven't completely got over the experience I relate in this poem.
I still have jealousy about it.
    The mind
    I listened to a lady
    Reading a poem
    It was a good poem
    I felt jealous
    But at the same time
    I liked her
    Mixed feelings
    That’s the mind for you

Time is one of the concepts human made to describe the flow of processes around us.
Since all observable processes do move, time exists, it's just personal for different observable entities.
And it's not an illusion, it's a concept. Flow of a process is factual.

Also, observing the mental explanation of what happens when you look at a fridge, as it exists within your mind(the thought explanation about how you observed the fridge), is also not real, because while it is a symbolic representation of something real, your mind does not possess the ability to extract the full actuality of the message being conveyed through the explanation, even if the explanation is fully intended to send out a full representation of something real. example:You learn about cells, but when you experience thoughts about cells within your mind, you are not actually experiencing an understanding about cells as they truly are, your mind is percieving a multitude of symbols intending to deliver you a full complete connection and perception on all levels of the nature of a cell, but your mind is not interacting with a cell, rather it is interacting with the explanation and so infinite nuances are left out, and it becomes 2 dimensional, and not real, cells exist, but they are not cells, they are what they really are, cells are an idea, no one has ever been in a relationship with the idea of a cell and been able to truly percieve a cell in reality at the same time. In essence almost everything is lost in translation through symbolic thought, which is any thought at all, both your thoughts and your senses aren't real, well thoughts are real as thoughts, they aren't real as anything else. A thought about a cell is real as a thought about a cell, but not real as a cell itself, and again almost everything is lost in translation.
Someone can fully intend to explain a real thing to you, but when you observe their explanation, you are not observing what they are explaining, only the explanation, which your brain does no truly possess the capacity to find the real thing through. See for yourself, you will find that everything loses it's sense of realness when you are lost in thought about it, because you are not in relationship with the real, but with the thought about the real, and the difference will always be there. The real makes you happy, but the world of symbols makes you feel dead inside, we live in a society lost in symbols, and this is the greatest problem in the world today.

Someone might have already said this- time is just a standardised measurement of change. Our concept of time is directly related to the movement of the earth and the moon as they orbit the sun. As such, my garden needs water in a specific time-frame as relative to the movement of the earth and the relative intensity of the sun; but I would hazard the guess that 'time' is not a quantifiable entity such as velocity, mass or energy (I know- mass, being a derivative of energy, is no longer viewed scientifically as a fixed quantity but it still comes in handy when measuring butter and flour for a cake).

That book seems to make a lot of sense, but which came first, consciousness or time? If it took millions of years for elements to form in the big bang, millions of years for it to cool down enough so that electrons could attach themselves to the protons and neutrons, millions of years for it to cool down so that atoms could come together to form molecules- which could become life after another amount of time; wouldn't it be that time had to come before consciousness?

Welcome to my illusion of quantum probability YOU TWO heheheh love you guys.~)) I thank thee both of you Blindboy and beautiful Russ for today's thinking proposition and if I recall correctly, quantum physics ascertains that reality is a projection of "the observer", thus: who is the observer? you? me? us?
Reality being a communion state of mind :) I've always thought & sensed "time" as being circular or elliptical, being plasmated via concentric orbits that coallesce like syncopathic flux-reflux : Pythagora's Music of the Spheres?
This moment we're building up together in this circle within this Russellian community is also ipso factum already a part in the fulcrum of " the present eternal": the here & now we all energizing it, right this instant by seeing, watching, reading, observing, listening, feeling, sensing and contemplating:
Behold we are ancient light traversing aeons, dust of stars being conscious of themselves in this moment eternal

This is the type of content you should expand upon for good trews, it reminds me of Bill Hicks wish to hear a 'positive drug story' in the news for once. I'm not saying you both were indulging at the time of filming but I do find it sometimes helps when pondering the nature of reality or watching trews.
Check out membrane theory or m-theory in quantum physics as it includes the notion of a 'holographic universe', the theory is trying to solve the questions surrounding the big bang, such as inflation or expansion. An example of the holographic universe could be the fact that atoms are mostly empty space and that we know nothing about dark matter or dark energy, that's because it just isn't there. We are in fact information being 'projected' from a 2D surface or membrane of pure information and energy (think about what this could mean in the context of spirituality!). As for time, time and space (spacetime) are approximations of a more primal entity - information in a quantum process. It's only relative to our minds as we try to make sense of a reality we have a very limited perception of.

Hey Russell! I've read Biocentrism and I think the idea is exceptionally interesting. If you decide to youtube The Afterlife Dysfunction, which explains the theory with a very interesting spin (which you can guess from the name of the video), I think you'd be really excited by some of the implications of the idea! I'd love a reply, especially if you actually take the time to watch the video I've recommended. Thankfully it's only 9 minutes long, so shouldn't take up too much of your time! (I didn't make the video by the way, I'm not trying to get views or anything).

Is Dylan's 'Idiot Wind' just about his angry arguments with Sara, which is certainly one theme in a long & complex lyric, or does it also refer to the relentless babble of the media and its power to distort our perception? Pete Hammil said, in his sleevenotes: 'It is a hard, cold-blooded poem about the survivor's anger, as personal as anything ever committed to a record. And yet is can also stand as the anthem for all who feel invaded, handled, bottled, packaged; all who spent themselves in combat with the plague; all who ever walked into the knives of humiliation or hatred. The idiot wind trivialized lives into gossip, celebrates fad and fashion, glorifies the dismal glitter of celebrity. Its products live on the covers of magazines, in all of television, if the poisoned air and dead grey lakes. But most of all, it blows through the human heart. Dylan knows that such a wind is the deadliest enemy of art. And when the artists die, we all die with them.'

I love the idea of illusive reality - we could all be entirely different looking beings to one another (antenna, no ears, 5 arms, etc) but our nervous system interprets the world around us as due to the way it understands it. An x-ray image will see a skeleton, not a body. Imagine if we all had x-ray vision!
The idea of quantum probability is interesting BUT, as with what I've mentioned above, all our senses marry up to make something appear to be what it is. Our visual perception says the fridge looks cuboid-ish. Our tactile perception clarifies that. So it becomes harder to inject the idea that the fridge isn't as we sense it because we continually receive emotionally conclusive perceptions of what it is. Especially as it was created by humans (well, unless there are alien slaves that we don't know about, wearing hairnets and rubber gloves, working on assembly lines).
However, it could be in a state of constant flux, and it is just by coincidence that we only perceive it as this fridge like being only when we are sensing it. I guess that is a Humean approach in some respects.
Anyway, back to my roast dinner... that may or may not really be there.

Why does commitment have to be marked by marriage certificates? Cohabiting is a relatively recent term which has developed to accommodate the changes in family formations. The article 'Happy Families' discusses how throughout the 50's and 60's there were more couples choosing to marry, which when compared with past and current statistics represented a break from the norm. I feel as though the media constantly amplify current developments, in this case, contemporary family dynamics. Does having a marriage certificate in some way make you better parents? I don't think so... In my opinion this idea reflects the governments political agenda. For example is the relationship counselling available in some children's centres a strategy to improve children's outcomes? In my opinion this resembles yet another initiative to save the government money. I have no idea why cohabiting, monogamous, committed couples are in any way less capable parents. In order to achieve the best chance of achieving positive outcomes for your children shouldn't require parents to be in a committed relationship. As long as your children are loved, entertained, and have a stable routine with one of or both parents, I see no reason why these factors are any cause for concern. One possibility is that a lack of time could result in parents struggling to be fully available to their child, despite the fact that alongside these changes the 'traditional' roles of each gender has increased the number of married family units which have both parents working full time and offering limited amounts of quality time. For me this is a greater concern to children's welfare as secure attachments are less likely to form with two parents that are rarely available, than stable families that choose to cohabit instead of gaining a piece of paper to express their commitment! This is not an issue which would be highlighted through the media as, once again it's all about the money. The fact of the matter is the move away from traditional families and historic stigma attached to children born out of wedlock, doesn't present a cause for public concern.

there is no time, time is on my side.out of time, plenty of time,
I have pondered the many uses of the word in it,s various terms of reference, any time.all the time, time has come today.but it is only in the present that we exist
the premise that reality is created by our perception is certainly not a new concept,I read about it in high school and that was many years ago.
