History of "SWAY" (Quien Sera) - 4 versions- Gorme, Rydell +

- The melody was written in 1953 as a cha-cha by Mexican band leader Pablo Beltran Ruiz and titled Quien Sera. That means "Who will it be" ... who will be my next love after the one I lost. Spanish lyrics were added.
In America original English words were written and the title became Sway.
It became a #15 hit for Dean Martin in 1954, and #21 for Eileen Barton. The song went on to become a popular part of the English repertoire. Bobby Rydell had a big hit with it in 1960, in the rock+roll era. In 1979 he hit big again with a popular disco version.
Lately artists like the PussyCat Dolls have made good recordings.
Selections:
1) Quien Sera by the Ruiz orchestra
2) @2:20 Quien Sera by Eydie Gorme sung in Spanish and English, from her rare 1960 United Artists LP "I Feel So Spanish"
3) @4:40 Sway - Bobby Rydell 1960 #14, from original vinyl
4) @6:59 Sway disco version by Rydell. Edited and shortened here from 5:10.
My favorite of all is Rydell's 1960. It has that intriguing female chorus harmony, that was sometimes used at the time, also found on Bobby Darin's "Nature Boy" and Donnie Brooks' "Mission Bell".
Julie London did an excellent rendition on her rare album "Latin In a Satin Mood". - เพลง
YES!!!! My mom "introduced" me to Bobby Rydell back when I was a teen doing a report on the 50's/60's! Fell in LOVE w/ his voice! Mom has ALL his 45's in MINT condition, but she still let me play them! LOL! It kills me that his man w/ one THE GREATEST voices of his era is not played or remembered more! And to top it off... what a doll! ;-) Mom met him back in the early 60's and she said he was so nice "to an old married woman!" Ha! She was 23! Love Mr. Rydell!
Oh! Bobby Rydell! "Sway" the very first 45 rpm I bought. I was totally in love with Bobby Rydell. Good souvenirs, thank you.
Thanks for posting. This is Bobby's song for sure.
I think we tend to like the version we grew up on. But when you hear it in it's Latin versions you still can't stop tappin those toes. This song is one of the few songs thats all about the rhythm. Great Great song no matter who is doing it.
Eddie Gorme, Bobby Rydell! They are the Bomb! Thanks you!
Bobby Rydell's back-up singers on this and his other recordings are the same three African-American grandmothers he always used. Great sound with them singing.
"Sway" is the English version of "¿Quién será?", a 1953 mambo song by Mexican composer and bandleader Pablo Beltrán Ruiz. In 1954[citation needed] the English lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel and recorded by Dean Martin (his recording reached number fifteen on the Billboard magazine best-seller chart[1] and number six on the UK chart). Since then the song has been recorded and remixed by many artists (see discography below).
In 1954 this song was recorded by PEDRO INFANTE, the silkiest voice ever and by far the best version.
The 60's Bobby Rydell was the best
Dean Martin's was very good as well as Arielle Dombasle.
Espectacular.
I like this four version presentation of this popular song. One of those which has such a nice cha-cha-cha rythm it invites one to dance it with a suitable partner. Have enjoyed hearing and dancing it for a very long time now in fact nearly sixty years.
Check out: "Anita Kelsey - Sway (Dark City)" It was cool in that flick.
Thanks for putting this together! I'm partial to the first Rydell version--what a voice! I'm glad the PD did this, but evidently it didn't turn enough profit, so they resorted to stuff like "Don't Cha". Oh well. I can only hope that really good music will win out!
Thanks again!
In the Rydell part of this video I really love the girl's background vocal, just great.
اغنية جميله جدا والمعني مريح جدا وصوت وعفوية في الأداء
Oui oui j’ai tout compris et merci👌👀😇💐
"El Consorcio" (they where the original mocedades) redid this in their first recording most recently, dedicated to the people of Cuba but launched in Miami. Also Jennifer Lopez made a great rendition with an afro-cuban beat!
just to say; _Thank You_. always loved the song / never knew much about it.
Good show.
Excelente eleccion, bien por estas canciones y muchas gracias por compartirlas
Saludos desde Mexico
thank you very much for the info on the right side. Really, good job.
thanx!!
Great job on the history of this wonderful song. I like all versions of it, particularly the ~ 2004 rendition by Michael Buble. The adaptation by Pussy Cat Dolls is also very nice.
Nice song
i have a reissue 45 of rydell's of sway and volare-i like both songs even if,or because of,their 1960 las-vegas-lounge-esque arrangements-btw,here on youtube is a scopitone of this version of sway, and his real name is Riddarelli.
It is hopelessly obscure.
Steve and Eydie have a website.
Immortal !
A very good observation to compare the girl harmony on 1960 Rydell Sway with Darin's Nature Boy. It had never occurred to me, but is spot on.
I also love his 1961 That Old Black Magic. I think these were from his LP BR Sings the Big Ones. I'd buy it if I saw it.
Also being a original Jersey boy, I remember some of the great talent coming out of North Jersey, NYC and Philly in the 50's and 60's.
Me 2
Right. I found that LP too - Latin In a Satin Mood. Seems to be scarce, maybe I should post some of the songs. Excellent renditions.
Thank you very much. I love it.
I like versions::::::Michael BUBLE and Pussycat dolls. So different buth both marvellous:))))
Very nice and informative video, thanx. Everything good starts with a latino!! haha. I wrote Greek lyrics for the song, I am putting a reference to your video.
Thanks for posting! I have seen Norman Gimbel credited with the English lyrics.
اجمل اغنية سمعتها في حياتي السابقه والحالية والا حقه
Lubię wersje:::: Michaela BUBLE i Pussycat dolls.Bardzo różne ale obie cudne:))))
@GSilverWorld
Starting with this one, I discovered your other thematic videos and loved them. Carefully selected versions, depth of knowledge and taste. Result is wonderful videos. I had not heard Rydell's and London's versions. I am glad to have known them now.
However, I would love to learn your assessment on the Rosemary Clooney & Perez Prado version of this tune.
I am originally a New Jersey boy: So here is my take: The Rydell original unlike the more recent version was much better. The latter is full of busy wallpaper. Bobby could have transcended his good original version by using a Charanga orchestra (strings and flute) from the upper west side - not far from his neighborhood - and knocked them dead. Bobby was a gifted, talent with great phrasing.
In 1954 this song (quién será?) was recorded by PEDRO INFANTE , the silkiest voice ever and by far the best version. Check it out!!!
La versión de anita kelsey, la que esta en la banda sonora de Dark City, es la que más me gusta.
nice music
i think you shouldve included Dean Martin's version
i believe its the best version in my opinion
some people want to swoon ...but i want to sway....cha cha cha.....!
Pablo Beltran Ruiz , el autor 1953. Primero en español y despues en 1954 en ingles alguien mas
Me gusta much el ritmo espanol!
I like this song :p I sang it for the school choir lol xD
where can i download or buy Quien Sera by Eydie Gorme??
If you like 'latin music' find an LP or CD by CARERINA VALENTE and her brother SYlVIO FRANCESCO. OLE CATERINA and ARRIBA CATERINA Both originally from 1959 and featuring their 2 voices and 2 ACOUSTIC GUITARS.These are AMAZINGLY talented renditions. No gimmicks or vocal minipulations.Just their own arrangements.LESS IS MORE! I LOVE EM!
That can actually be found on the internet. Maybe I don't need to.
How it started?is it from Mexico?but I like much better in english...what do you think?
i loved the marine band version in just dance
@ronetteloverz Why was this comment marked as spam?
Hey this is really interesting. I've just been getting some clues myself that it was The Ronettes. It must have been them too on Bobby Darin's Nature Boy. Let's hear more about this. What's the key to making that kind of harmony?
@Sashey24 I doubt it. Only if you find a way to save this video.
@GSilverWorld ...I don't know why anyone would mark it as spam. I heard about him having three African-American grandmothers as back up singers during a radio interview a number of years ago. They are definitely not the Ronettes. Their voices are completely different from the three Ronettes.
My favorite is Julie London
@Sashey24 See description at right.
i prefer markus Haider's version
DiGavroche, Me too
Same with me
does anyone kno who the female singer is in it second version??? I need to kno asap for a party!!
among al the female english singers, julie london own this song as a solo version
Markus Haider
Маркус найдер
Or for an influenced by Valente version LARGELY LATIN by LES SANS NOM.Decca ECS2095
@NaomiJuliaRoochnik BEAUTIFUL VOICE, JOB WELL DONE MISS NOAMI JULIA, WE LIKE IT, ME AND MY HONEY.
ok, my nickname is a title of this song ^^
@NaomiJuliaRoochnik BEAUTIFUL VOICE, AMAZING, LOVELY, JOB WELL DONE MISS NAOMI JULIA. MAKE A RECORD OF THAT BEAUTIFUL SONG, I REALLY LIKE IT SO AS MY WIFE
Rosemary Cloney 's was the best.
I don't think any version can top the one that appears on (believe it or not) on one of the volumes in the Arthur Murray's Music for Dancing series of LPs. This one can be heard on TH-cam: th-cam.com/video/qU8Y2KLUH_A/w-d-xo.html
For me... is better the last version of "Sway" singing by Michael Bublé.
Thank you for share, I agreed with you Bobby Ridell did the best version ever. pussycat dolls sucks. Thank you on more time.
Dean Martin owns this song
@GSilverWorld It sounded better without vocals that's always my opinion!!!
My favorite version is by the Sexbomb Girls.
not who will it be ---more like: who might be the one ?? The one who will give me his love.
Here is a better recording of the original version th-cam.com/video/0wEl7hghwc8/w-d-xo.html
The very best version in my opinion is the duet sang by Julio Iglesias and Thalia, here:
th-cam.com/video/5w5Zu4oPL84/w-d-xo.html
I think so.
@BoraMT Prado is better than Clooney.
Prefer Dean Martin and Rosemary Clooney’s versions.
Listen to marcuis haidar version
Although I am a big fan of JLO as an artist . . . but I must say her interpretation of this son is the worst I have heard. She has no color, no emotions, no weight . . . I am surprised to see that from a Latina singer.
