DIY 2x4 Guitar Build

- In today's video, I get to grips with building my very first handmade guitar body from scratch.
I wanted to practice routing guitar neck pockets, so I thought we'd have fun making a 2x4 guitar with a piece of reclaimed scrap wood I found from a building site.
I have a very cool gold Telecaster bridge with roller saddles that I'll be using in the build.
I will be installing a diMarzio DP189 Tone Zone hotrail pickup straight to the output jack, hoping to get some pure tonewood sounds.
Once I build the 2x4 Robster Plankcaster guitar I will give it a good test run.
For the demo I will be using a Behringer UD300 Distortion pedal, through garageband using vox amp simulator. I will also a use bit of delay for the lead guitar tone.
All the electric guitars you will hear in the demo will be this very 2x4 Guitar I built.
I really hope you enjoy this cool fun build, let me know what you think to the guitar build in the comments.

You could route some sort of channel on the side and make changeable wings for it in all sorts of shapes. It could go from a tele to a strat to a jm to anything in between or any combination.
I had a conversation about that yesterday 🤣 the possibilities are endless 🤣
That is clearly a revolutionary Idea! I'd Love to See that...
@@theguitarmanifesto i dig the way it is now honestly too. That blue is nice and the bridge and pickup look cool on it.
I have plans for this idea, make any guitar you want with inserts 💯
There is beauty in simplicity
A great follow up to Jim Lill’s video about whether tone wood is a myth lol I love this! It seriously proves everything wrong about the snobbery, no one would be able to identify this as a plank they’d think it’s a Les Paul Standard probably haha
Glad you liked the video 🎸🤘 not familiar with Jim dude.
Unfortunately most people listen with their eyes.
Once I tweak the electrics and add some CTS pots and a orange drop cap you should be able to hear a fuller sound.
My inspiration for the plank was a 2x4 la Baye I owned many years ago, guess they're worth a pretty penny now 💰💰

It reminded me of your plankcaster, demonstrating the sound really does come from the strings, pickups, and the electronics. A lot of people play cigar box guitars, no one mentions tonewood then lol
gonna tell my kids this was jimmy page recording the stairway solo
🤣🤣 recorded essentially on a cricket bat 🤣
how exciting it was to see you do that mate, you are so ready for a full body :-)
Glad you enjoyed, coming from an awesome established builder like yourself I thank you very much. Ideas and plans are on the horizon 🎸💯
@@theguitarmanifesto hell yeah :-) thanks mate you are too kind, if you need any help/tips, feel free to ask me mate :)
That's a lovely colour, especially after the oil cured and you buffed it just right to that lovely satin sheen. And the tonewood sounded great!
She made for a good practice run, yes the colour turned out great with tru oil 🎸🔥👌
You could always add top and bottom bouts to it at a later date and make your own 335
The possibilities are endless 🤣
Brilliant mate. Excellent work and nice riff too
Thank you very much bro, good fun bit of practice in preparation for some cool builds 🎸👌
Very Cool, Thankyou. That must be a very satisfying achievement. Nice Work.
All it's good fun, routing neck pockets is all I really needed to learn. The rest I'm pretty experienced. 😃
I really like the blue stain! And who knew you could shred on a 2x4??
The colour came out great, oh she kicks 🤘 I did make a follow up video with some modifications
This is why I subscribe
No BS on this channel 🎸😎
Too cool. Cheers!
Turn out good for a bit of scrap wood 🤣🎸
I built my first guitar body with just a jigsaw, a very similar sized router, hand drill and a select few hand tools. Based on what you did here you could do that no probs! (It takes a while with that size router though let me tell you😅)
A beefier router is definitely needed along with a few other choice tools 👌 plenty of cool builds on the horizon
No frickin way Nice Manifesto! This is very 😎........ Hahahaha!! You sizing up on the look on your neck to the 2x4 body with that long azz 2x4 o my lord I can't stop laughing! Hilarious Rob! Your build looks so Awesome man.... i love that gold bridge this build is very impressive can't wait to hear it play I bet it Rocks....I saw this cat on here name Jim I ain't dropping his channel name but he made a guitar out of his dad's workbench and motorcycle jig it played great... 😂 I went straight to the end I had to see the Robster Rock on my god it Jams!!! 😂 😂 I want one now!! LoL" Great video Manifesto!
🤣🤣 glad you digged it Elvis, it was a fun practice run and she turned out pretty darn good.
Amazing the ideas people come up with 🤣
Thanks for dropping by my man, I see a new pretzel video has finally landed 🤘😃🎸🔥
@@theguitarmanifesto I can't believe how good you built that Plankcaster I love your color choice and finish its Beautiful man for a 2x4 LoL"... I had to jump from your pickup routing to the end performance sound I couldn't wait!! Then I circled back after that.....God it totally Rocks I want one before any other guitar on earth LoL" I jumped off my bed when I heard that baby sing.... your video & guitar performance was your best ever!!! 😂 Totally Manifesto S.T.Y.L.E at its finest.. always will love watching you build guitars especially this one!!!! 😂
Looks and sounds great!! Love the color!!
Thank you dude, was a bit of fun whilst practicing building
@@theguitarmanifesto Fun-that's always gotta be #1 on the list! You're welcome Bro!
Yes the word fun gets lost nowadays ☺️
@@theguitarmanifesto Truth!!
Crazy when you think how much goes into building a guitar.
Makes we wonder why some brands build shitty guitars.
Squire is a good example.
Not exactly cheap and often..
( not always but often..)
The finish. The neck. The bridge ain't right.
Think say if you were a kid..1st guirar you ever brought which went out of tune everytime you used the whammy.
Or sharp frets and a rough knock.
Noisy pickups and flat intonation.
You would give up after frustration I think.
Everyone should build quality guitars for sure!!.😁
They have the equipment, a lot of it is down to price and how much time is spent on the QC side.
Oh I totally agree, a good setup will solve a lot of the QC problems.
Looks like Leo pickup test bench setup. Love it.
Ah yes the bench of chaos 🤣🎸
She looks like my Ex- long, lean and mean!😂
With a little bit of sass
@@theguitarmanifesto you know the type...lol
Yes 🤣🤣
@@theguitarmanifesto beware the skinny ones! And I don't mean guitars.
All shapes and forms in my experience 🤣
Excellent video and guitar build and it sounds good.
Thank you very much
I Woodint want to miss this 😜
this is an ES-335 (at least the important parts,, the wings of air they attach to that solid body guitar do nothing)
Make the tone and volume pots like on a jazzmaster control plate. Then you dont have the pots sticking up.
Thumb wheels 👌good plan sir. I think I have a Jazzmaster/jaguar wiring loom somewhere
@@theguitarmanifesto Cool !
*Perfect* :)
Cut a triangle out of the bottom and you have a v
Love it. You can hear the inherent plankiness coming through in the recorded tones.
Metallica did a song called “2 x 4”, I think a cover may be in order?
The plank sound 🤣 when I stick pots and a cap in it'll beef the sound up.
@@theguitarmanifesto to be honest, you could layer that in a mix and nobody would know you’d been spanking the plank 😆
So impressive mate!!
Good bit of fun 🤣🎸😎🤘
@@theguitarmanifesto mate you’re a guitar luthier now !!
God I hate that word 🤣
@@theguitarmanifesto yep, it’s a strange word 🤣
Hipster jargon 🤣
Sounds great! Nice work!
Thank you very much 😃
looks really ....comfy to play.....ehum
🤣🤣
How would i attach straos to a 2x4 guitar
One on the bottom end of the guitar, and the other like an sg on one of the neck plate screws.
Pretty cool, well done Rob! 😀🎸
Thanks dude, next build a real guitar 🎸
Looks wise it's pretty simple but can't argue with the sound. Sounds real nice.
Ok good people! This goes to show You that Robbie is not only an awesome guitar player but this guitar is proof of creative passion. It's not just a two by four. It's art!😎🤘 Peace
Thank you very much. 😊
