I use this method all the time - in the car, around the house, I even talk to my cats in German. If you already know a lot of the rules, then talking like this gives you time to think and correct yourself, without the pressure of another person, and the more you use or hear combinations of words, or word endings, the more instinctive they become. A native speaker will never think "okay so that's a feminine noun in dative so the adjective takes -en and die becomes der" or whatever - it's all natural, from habit, and the more you talk to yourself, taking your time, the more all these thousands of grammar combinations stick in your head. That then helps your listening skills because you recognise the patterns rather than thinking and translating individual words or endings.

That's my thoughts exactly, I started German 25 days ago. I have Anki Goether A1 - 20 percent finished, DW's A1 Nicos weg on repeat. Now I can make sentences in my head, but I change German words I don't know with English or Russian, and then look those words up. Google translate helps immensely. And by the way I understood 100 percent of the meaning, but maybe 30 percent of words in this conversation.

Ich rede mit mir selbst den ganzen Tag im Kopf, und irgendwann kann ich das richtige Wort nicht finden und schaue direkt auf den Übersetzer, und lerne, was dieses Wort ist. Es ist eine sehr gute Methode, empfohlen 👌 und danke Cari für deine sehr deutliche Aussprache, du erinnerst mich, dass Deutsch eigentlich nicht so eine schwere Sprache ist 😊❤
Ich mache dasselbe. Sogar auf meiner Muttersprache bereite ich Sätze zum bestimmten Themen oder Situationen vor, die ich dann später aus der Ärmel ziehen kann. (Öfters unter der Dusche, warum auch immer...) Auf Deutsch muss man halt einige Sachen im Wörterbuch nachschlagen, um sicher zu sein, dass es Sinn ergibt.

I read an interesting article about learning and communicating in a language. The writer's main argument was this: we don't need to focus on ourselves (trying to minimise mistakes) when we communicate in a new language. Instead, we need to focus on the other side of the conversation, in our case, let's say German native speakers. It matters how much you understand when talking to native speakers. Furthermore, when you understand the natives fully, they will always understand you, no matter how many grammatical mistakes or mispronunciation may have. What I saw with Robin today was like the true example of this argument.

Ich schätze seinen Ehrgeiz, ich benutze die gleiche Methode, aber erst nach einem Jahr spreche ich auf diesem Niveau, was sollen wir tun? Wir haben nicht alle das gleiche Maß an Intelligenz..... Und vielleicht spielt auch das Alter eine Rolle
I use a “diary’s method” :) basically writing several sentences about my day in a diary in German :) now about my days in Germany (I have been in Munich for three weeks now, so it is even more fun!)

A tip is :whenever you speak with others ,act like you don’t know English ,then they will try their best to explain it to you in Deutsch.
There may be another concept to consider. It may be not that often that these Germans have the opportunity to speak English with a Native Speaker. So they would like to practice their English skill with you.
My approach would be to let them have a conversation with you in English and you answer them in German. I have done that a few times by asking the person if that was OK with them, as I explain that is how I learned to speak both English and German at the same time in Germany as a child.
@@Vedexent_ At least start there and explain in your conversation that you are in Germany to learn and better you German Language skills. At the same time you are more than willing to help the other person better their English Language skills. Keep in mind though, that one starts their first foreign language education in the 3rd or 4th Grade and this continues on until graduation some years later. If you choose to learn another language that may start in the 6th Grade and continue on. The 2nd language I chose was Latin.
Recently, I offered to send my German Relatives an abridged Oxford English Dictionary and an American English Thesaurus and they politely declined, saying that they had enough resources to do well in learning the English Language. Further, the English classes I have attended as an Observer and Native Speaker seem to bear that out, as to the proficiencies of how the Queen's English is taught in Germany. When communicating with most people in Germany I use the German Language and the same if I meet Europeans whose native language is German. It seems to put them more at ease, as they deal with being in North America. Which may be the primary reason, a European will likely want to communicate with you in English, while you are in Europe. All of us understand the immense challenges in learning another language proficiently and that it is a lifetime learning skill. Which is why I spend at least 20 hours a week on You Tube listening to German and Latin language V Logs. From German I have learned some Danish and from Latin I have learned some Spanish and Romanian, all from investing some time every week on You Tube.
I learned both English and German as a child, while living in Germany and attending German Schools for a total of 6 years and later moved to North America. Then I returned to Europe off and on for another 8 years to complete my Higher Education degrees in both Germany and Switzerland. With that time of living in Europe, I also learned local regional dialects of German and English. As Robin states in his other V Logs, there are also "Soft Skills" in Language Learning that one also needs to learn for good communications with another Human. I may not know all of the proper grammar rules every time, when writing or speaking German, yet I do know how to use a local Dialect to get around that situation when speaking.

This absolutely works. I thought it was quite obvious for everyone when I was younger. I speak to myself a lot in my mother tongue since I was a kid, and was always very "praised" for being very eloquent in everyday life. When I had to learn a foreign language I automatically started doing it, realized afterwards. And yup, it works. Also, when I realized not everyone does it I asked my best friend, a psychologist, if I was going nuts. His reply was: "as long as you don't hear anyone replying to you, all is good" :)

I have the same tendency to say "also" when speaking in German as a gap while I figure out what to say.

They are called filler words. He uses also "ne" hehe We could use more Modalpartikeln 😊
This is bad habit, you will become habitual with this. Then after 2-3 year you will become fluent. But this word become your habit.

I am so happy because for the first time I could understand almost everything they're saying. I think that was because he was being very careful with the words and speaking slowly, discovering new ways to express what he had in mind. I have been trying to learn German for over five years now, and for now there is an improvement even-thou i am a Nigerian and i never going any where outside my country but however i know so many things in Speaking German in terms of pronounce, spellings, counting cardinal numbers, etc I believe one day i will get the opportunity for going to Germany. Ich muss sagen dass in meine Erfahrung, die wichtigste ist Motivation. Wenn man sehr motiviert ist, kann man alles machen.
This is so timely for me! I have been learning German off and on since 2015. I have taken some classes with the Goethe Institut (am taking A2.2 now) but mostly learned on my own and have plateaued over and over. I felt like I couldn't remember everything I learned because I didn't get to use it. And on the few occasions I did have to speak, I was so nervous and self conscious that I did terribly. When we were on lockdown in the spring I restarted my learning and I am so motivated to make progress. I read something that Emanuel from Your Daily German wrote, that you should read aloud to yourself every day, and I have been trying to do that. I have also done things like, describe the book I am reading to an imaginary audience, or talk about a trip I have taken. I have just started working with a teacher on iTalki and told her my issues with speaking. So she is going to basically force me to become comfortable speaking. I am so encouraged, and motivated, by Robin. I feel like that is what REAL German learning looks like, that you don't get to see. It's not perfect, but he doesn't stop to think for long moments about what the adjective ending should be or whatever ...he keeps going and he seems comfortable doing it. And I had no trouble understanding him. Thank you for featuring him!
It’s really a good method to start learning to speak a foreign language. You don’t even have to talk to yourself, just trying to think in that language or interpret your thoughts to that language is good practice. It's not easy at first but as you realize each time that you don’t know a word or how to express something, there’s no pressure, you just go look it up and take your time doing it so it gets better with time.
Finally its not only me!! I learned English by talking by myself. And it worked! No more fear and at that time i can sense whether the grammar was incorrect or not. Must try with german language now 😊
This is an awesome idea that I'm definitely going to use. As well, I feel so self-conscious speaking German when I know I am making these same mistakes Robin made but I loved that he kept going and emphasized fun and that Cari understood everything he was explaining. Makes me think I should just go for it. One of my fave videos from this channel ♥️

He is making a real effort. His German prononciation is excellent, and he doesn't care about making mistakes (in the sense that it won't stop him from speaking). This is the right attitude, and he'll be speaking German fluently in no time.
Thank you for this you two! I found it discouraging thinking I'm learning this and not being able to retain any of it because I'm not speaking to another.
Also, I enjoy that he's okay with making mistakes, but still getting his point across and you receiving his "mistakes" and being so encouraging. ☺️

I really like how Cari handled the Situation. She is very polite. This video inspires me to practice by myself.
I found this very interesting, however I've also learnt something else about myself and how I would like to rekindle my German. I am now 60 years old and lived in Germany in my 6-11 year old formulative years. The German language came naturally to me, learnt from friends, TV, general interaction and has always stayed with me, 'albeit' very diminished now. I wanted to relearn the language, but found the courses either way too basic or too advanced and lost interest. However, I watched this and struggled to understand the most basic of conversation, then noticed I was watching the eyes, the mouth, facial expressions, gesticulations, all while trying to read the subtitles and translation. I closed my eyes and just purely listened to the conversation. I didn't get it first, second / third time round, but the more i went through it, the more my brain understood. I hope this may help someone else learn / hear it differently
Im just starting self-teaching myself German and I am using a very similar method. I follow both these TH-camrs, Easy German for high-quality comprehensible input at my level, and Robin’s channel for inspiration and motivation.

This is great! I've been very slowly learning German language for a while now with several methods but this has propelled me forward! His method jettisoned me into speaking sentences & helped me learn many words sooner.

Sehr gut gemacht! Ich bin der Meinung, dass es ein sehr gute Methode ist, um mit selbst zu sprechen weil jede Person hat eigene Wortschatz. Es ist wirklich wichtig zu verstehen, dass wir nicht brauchen, alle Wörter auf ein Sprache sich zu erinnern und was brauchen wir ist nur die minimal Basic Wörter die wir oft nutzen.
Hmm, Du benutzt scheinbar recht viele verschiedene Worte, nicht nur ein paar. (•‿•) In der Praxis habe ich mir zumindest immer wieder ein paar zusätzliche Worte herausgesucht, um mich präziser ausdrücken zu können. Dadurch wächst der Wortschatz auch langsam aber sicher.
Bin froh, dieses Kanal entdeckt zu haben 🙂 Ich kann zwar fließend Deutsch, nur eben nicht wie ein Muttersprachler. Mir fällt es manchmal schwer, mich in gewissen Situationen auszudrücken... Vorallem wenn ich aufgeregt bin oder das Gespräch etwas tiefsinniger ist. Ich finde die Idee einen Podcast regelmässig anzuhören prima... Oder auch mit sich selbst ein Gespräch zu führen...mein Deutsch kann sich immer aufbessern....und momentan höre ich alles oder lese nur auf meine Muttersprache 😅 Danke für die Videos!

VIELEN DANK!!! Zum ersten Mal fühl ich mich nicht ganz verrückt!!! Mit mir selbst in fremdsprachen zu reden, das habe ich eigentlich immer getan und dachte, ich wäre die einzige auf der Welt. Ein Tagebuch auf Deutsch zu schreiben, das hatte ich vor einigen Jahren angefangen, war aber zu faul dafür!
Ich bin Deutsche und mache das auch so mit Englisch. Wenn ich was nicht weiß und auch nicht umschreiben kann, sehe ich nach. Durch diese Selbstgespräche habe ich mein Englisch schon sehr verbessert.
So ein zufriedener Mensch!Er ist so attraktiv!!
This is exactly how I self-taught Japanese... I studied in my room for hours at a time, watched things with subtitles and took notes... I changed my phone into Japanese and used Japanese when talking with myself as often as possible. I still believe the only reason I was able to just go straight for the N3 test (and pass!) was because after studying alone for about 3 or 4 years I found a small group of people in my city who met up weekly. There weren't even many native speakers aside from the host, but just having a place to practice and study with helped me overcome that little hurdle of going from "conversational beginner" to "intermediate". I minored in Japanese without ever taking a single Japanese class with this method ! (tested out of them all)
Now I am here, attempting the same with German, although unlike Japanese, I have taken 2 semesters of German in the past. I find that I can understand the German fairly easily, but it's creating sentences of my own that is difficult at this stage. Wünsch mir glück!
oh yeah, the best way to make me feel old is that I started learning Japanese before apps even really existed ... lol... i started with "japanese . about . com" ahahhahaha

I used this method when I was in Germany, because I was so shy to even try to talk to people, so so shy. So I grabbed my phone, I went into google translate application and I asked questions to my self with voice funcionality. So the translator was trying to figure it out what the hell I was trying to say and also this app corrected me, as the same way I tried to answer my question. I felt enormous progress on my language learning.

Ich wohne in Spanien, wo ich die Sprache angefangen zu lernen habe und danach bin ich nach Deutschland umgezogen, dort habe ich eure Videos vor noch 2 Jahren weiter gesehen und bis heute ich weiter lernen bei euch. Wonderful, this is a method I always recommend to people. I've used it for both Spanish and English. It also helps you know what your limits are as you try to explain yourself to yourself hahaha. I sincerely love it a lot, it's so much fun.

I learned English by talking to myself and my parents took me to therapy. Then I continued doing it when I was alone and also reading and writing a journal all in English. Same I do with German
Thanks for inspiration. I started with a variation based on method in the video - Now when I practise german words in Anki I always have to invent sentence where I use the word and say it aloud. It forces me to speak and create sentences which helps with talking ability and also helps with better understanding of each word since I actually have to use it.

did you find him fluent? I don't think so he's fluent 😅. I can speak better german than him but I don't consider myself good at all. May be it depends how you consider what fluent or not, he's good in a conversational manner but schriftlich deutsch ist sehr schwieriger als gesprochene deutsch.
@@vikast4537 good points! I always say if I can understand someone's German so easily it must not be great German vs. a native speaker speaking normally which is an effort for me
His listening skills and understanding are good for that short of a time. Speaking is not too bad either has a basic fluency.

@Branden-vl9sl I'm now B1 and live in Munich. And I was probably A2 barely at the time so I still struggle and don't understand how people gey fluent quick. 2 years later, two years of german at uni later... its hard

Ein sehr inspirierendes Video. Man lernt aus diesem Video, dass man auch alleine eine Sprache lernen kann, Fehler machen darf und diese Fehler die Kommunikation nicht beeinträchtigen. Man braucht vor allem Mut, sich in einer Fremdsprache auszudrücken und ich finde, es ist ein sehr wichtiger Teil des Sprachlernprozesses: Mut sammeln. Hut ab Robin! Tolles Video! Ich dachte, dass ich die Einzige bin, die diese Methode benutzt. Ich auch, spreche ich mit mir selbst beim Deutsch lernen. Nämlich, vor einem Jahr habe ich begonnen Deutsch zu lernen und zwar alleine. Damals hatte ich kein Geld an einem Kurs teilzunehmen and deshalb konnte ich nur Videos auf TH-cam schauen. Übrigens, fühle ich mich wohl when ich diese Gespräche mit mir selbst führe. Als Robin sagt, das macht mir Spaß. Als ich letztes Jahr in Deutschland war, fragten mich die Leute und zwar Muttersprachlern, wo ich die Sprache gelernt habe and alle waren so beindruckt als ich gesagt hatte, dass ich keine Lehrern hatte. Deshalb, gibt nie auf, die traditionelle Methode ist nicht die Einzige Methode um unsere Ziele zu erreichen.
Diese Idee ist toll, habe ich sie selbst eingesetzt, und das wirkt Wunder. Ich habe es vor, das jeden Tag auf dieser Methode in verschiedenen Themen Deutsch zu üben, hoffentlich werde ich bald fließend deutsch sprechen kann..

Ich war sehr überrascht, als sie mir gesagt hat, dass sie nur vor dem Spiegel mit sich selbst auf Deutsch spricht. Obwohl sie niemals in einem deutschsprachigen Gebiet war, spricht sie sehr fließend und super. Nun versuche ich auch das zu tun. Sprechen mit Tieren ist auch eine gute Gelegenheit.❤

Ich bin von Amerika nach Deutschland gezogen und es war eine große Veränderung, ich musste in weniger als einem Jahr Deutsch lernen! Es hat eine Weile gedauert, aber die Videos haben geholfen! Danke!
Ich muss ihm zustimmen. Ich lerne seit ich 11 war Japanisch und habe soooo viele Selbstgespäche geführt. Mit 16 habe ich JLPT 1 bestanden und mit 17 konnte ich so fließend sprechen, dass man mich fragte ob ich in Japan aufgewachsen bin. Mir ist Jahre später aufgefallen, dass diese Selbstgespäche wahrscheinlich das beste Hilfsmittel waren.

Robin ist sehr sympathisch und ich finde seine Methode Sprachen zulernen toll! Ich habe selber Niederländisch dadurch gelernt dass ich mit mir selber auf Niederländisch geredet habe. Auch sprach ich in dieser Sprache mit meinen Hunden 😄 Ich glaube Robin ist vorbildlich vor allem jetzt wenn Leute einander nicht oft treffen dürfen.
Ich spreche zumindest ein wenig Deutsche und ich bin Dankbar für die Podcasts,es ist sehr wichtig,jeden Tag lerne etwas neues,ich weiß was ich wolte und jetzt habe ich es und mein Gefühl hat mir gesagt dass mir helfen wird,Ich komme aus Tansania,Africa und es ist sehr schwierig um Deutsche zu lernen weil von Hier gibt es ein paar Menschen wer kann Deutsche Sprechen so ich übe nicht viel,aber alles wird gut sein 😊

Wahnsinn wie gut du sprichst Robin!! Ich finde diese Methode auch super genial und du bist der Beweis dafür, dass dieser Weg funktionieren kann, wenn man offen ist. Vor allem finde ich diese Methode gut, wenn man nicht die Möglichkeit hat, in das Land der Zielsprache zu reisen oder auch vielleicht nicht so viel Zeit hat, MuttersprachlerInnen zu treffen.

I tried to interwiew myself and the only negative thing I found,becouse I was doing it wrong, was that I didn't answer the "questions ",the way I really meant,but was way much focused on the words I know,when I don't know others ..so I was cutting my opinions in the way to fit the story flow.
i use wrong words and wrong grammar :D sometimes i speak in english with my sister , but she laughing at me,because she said, that i have very bad and funny english :D but it's only beginning and i hope in the future my english will be great.
