Three lovely pubs I went to in Edinburgh were The Old Bell (the local for the family I was staying with), The Pear Tree (most beautiful pub I've ever seen) and Nichol's Pub (Royal Mile). I tried most of the pints on tap while there, but not Guiness as it's not something I drink often and Staropramen came out best in the Lagers for me (closest to what I drink back here in South Africa), but I really enjoyed the Irish/English ciders the most as we can't get Bulmers/Orchard Thieves etc. here. It's a beautiful city to walk around with mates and visit pubs, so much history and culture. Greets from South Africa.

There's some proper good pints in the real Scottish pubs around the town. Try The Bailie or Kay's bar if you're back again.
I used to live in Edinburgh, the best pint Ive had was in the Harbour Inn, Newhaven on the shore of the Forth. I generally avoided the centre as it is all for tourist and very little locals, if any, in the pubs.

You're not the only one. Been to Edinburgh three times, and spoons was the best pint. Kitty O'Sheas is just a crap tourist pub, with young one dimensional students working the bar. No craic whatsoever and probably the worst pint I had.
Should've went to the milnes bar on rose Street. Problem is all the big named bars ain't always the best. Maybe next time you're in Edinburgh check it out 🙂
Ryries bar at haymarket is possibly the best I’ve had in my home town Edinburgh. Huge price problem though as it’s £6.50 a Guinness. As for anywhere else the Wetherspoon is pretty good depending on the barman & how busy it is as they don’t have the time to let it settle properly. 👍
I thought Extra Cold was just a flash cool from cellar/chiller temp rather than a specfic temp? So if it's a warmer cellar than it might be useful, otherwise it's a waste of time and taste. Think England just use to storaging kegs at 3/4 deg then sticking the Extra Cold on for the "marketing". Class videos, looking out for the right temp Guinness in Birmingham

A lot of the tourist nonsense there. Few shouts earlier for leith, can be OK but no respect for the pint just thrown in the glass for the docker places. To be honest the inlaws are from Edinburgh and a decent pint of porter is at the Guildford Arms, bit pricey and it's Murphys but solid pint. Would love a few shouts for about leith.
Loads of reasons Americans would drink Guinness in Edinburgh thinking it's basically Ireland. Few companies have offices in the US, likewise a few American companies in Edinburgh. Direct flight from Boston to Edinburgh - to them, this is pretty much Ireland. Many think Ireland is in the UK. To them the distance is nothing so they probably don't expect it to be any different. Obviously many are aware it's not the same, but plenty want a full English and a pint of Guinness in Edinburgh.
When you're in the UK next you should try get a pint of Samuel Smith's Extra Stout. It's a keg Nitro Stout sold in Samuel Smith's pubs only. Depends on the city you go to but Sinclair's Oyster Bar in Manchester sells it (which I'd imagine is the next logical city you may visit in the UK, think it's sold in plastic cups there though). Worth a try to see what you think, you may have to film your review in a beer garden lol
I went to kitty O'Shea's in Edinburgh twice last year and had a above average Guinness but unlike yourself,it wasn't the first pint. Poured on both occasions that day so the Guinness was probably better than you had.

Bailie is lovely but a bit outside. Finns is nice out of the Irish bars, mulligans not that bad.
Kay's is one of my locals, is the Guinness actually good in there? I never see anyone in there drinking it, which is usually a bad sign.
