Congratulations on your new foal! Thank you for your videos. My 99 year old father, Ralph, watches frequently and loves the way you work your horses. He thinks a good name for your filly is Maude. We have a picture of my father and his younger brother sitting on one of their work horses named Maude around 1936. She was a Percheron. Her workmate was named Bonnie. He grew up farming with horses and tells the story of taking four horses out to the field to plow as a 9 year old. Your videos bring back great memories for him and us.
Having been a midwife for HUNDREDS of mares of all breeds, the fact she hasn’t expelled her afterbirth isn’t an issue until the 12 hour mark. Oftentimes the foal nursing releases oxytocin that helps the uterus contract and expels the afterbirth.
Yes I agree! My only experience is being an avid follower of Friesian Horses channel, but I have seen dozens of foals born there, and this is completely normal.
Retained placenta is a huge problem in draft mares and can absolutely be life-threatening and should not be minimized. I lost a draft mare as the result of a retained placenta and raised an orphan foal so I feel qualified to comment on this issue. I am looking forward to subsequent video updates and hope that both mare and foal are doing well. Jim is justifiably concerned.
@@pchaynes retained placentas happen in all breeds. It can be life threatening if not dealt with correctly. However, that being said, most Vets will tell you to give it 12 hours before you get seriously concerned. At the 12 hour mark, you should have a vet on the way. Whenever I suspected a retained placenta was a strong possibility, I would notify the vet and give them a heads up. Oftentimes they will swing by while they’re on their rounds unless they hear from you that the situation has resolved itself. No need to panic right away. The placenta hanging like that also allows gravity to help the process
My mare retained her placenta with her last foal. She foaled at 11pm and still had after birth hanging that morning at 5. We took her to the vet and they flushed her and put her on an antibiotic. She was just fine in a few days.
Yay I guessed the date right. Congratulations. This exact same thing happened to my mare. By the time the vet managed to get up a few hours later it had dropped naturally and she was absolutely fine so very hopeful it is the same thing. Thinking of you all
From my experience... A retained placenta is one that is not expelled within 3 hours of the birth. I gather the hanging placenta into a plastic bag and tie it to her tail so that it is not damaged too much and can be examined later. At 2-3 hours I administer oxytocin, followed by antibiotics and later a lavage with sterile saline. No sedation required. I place the mare and foal in a clean dry stall and observe carefully for temperature. Be sure to use iodine on the umbilical of the foal. I just read that it is common with draft horses and I always plan to take care for all births from this mare in the future. Likely to happen again. Usually no harm done and all is well in a few days. All my best!
Not to be rude or disrespectful, but if you have a mare getting ready to foal, why not keep them in a much smaller pasture or paddock in order to keep a closer watch for possible complications?
Horses do better foaling outside where they feel comfortable… but not that far out !! They are vulnerable,& this situation leaves the foal susceptible to predation !! Then he tells her not to be stupid !! Horses read your attitude towards them… & this guy doesn’t respect this horse…& she knows it,& doesn’t trust him . Not sure why you have horses…if you don’t love them for the beautiful creations they are ?
God Bless. Hope all is well with Lady and Baby. Jim, Brenda, I know you folks will carefully watch and tend to their needs. Looking forward to your updates. - ACD
Congratulations! I hope mare and foal are doing good. You have up to 3 hours before it becomes a serious emergency. Just keep an eye on them. Thanks for the updates. I hope everything goes smoothly.
Ken and I are praying. You know what to do as you’ve been doing this for years 😊We’re looking forward to hearing whether a filly or colt and that all is well. Miss you guys!
Sweet Day. Congratulations to Lady and Jim & Brenda. what a wonderful gift. Praying that Lady is fine and it is just taking a bit for things to work out.
Vets are not magicians. They can't just snap their fingers and make everything okay. They can also introduce things. They aren't working in a sterile OR, they are working in a barn or pasture. They put on a clean OB glove, but their coveralls have been on them all day, and they just came from another farm and another problem. Sometimes it is best to wait a little while and see if time will take care of things. Same with keeping them in a corral near the barn. Have you seen the level of manure in the barn lot? Better that she foal in a clean place and bring her in if you need to later. I had a mare that did this once. Her foal was very strong and active, and was up before she was. All day long, every time she laid down to clean, the foal would wander off and she would jump up to follow. She did eventually clean, but it just took time.
Wow!! She just HAD it!! 🥳🥰🥰 I was doing some reading and found it can stay attached 1-3 hrs after. W Bree it was roughly 3 hrs AFTER she was born and the placenta had detached. So this little one was born within 15 minutes when y’all saw it.😮😮 I watch Friesian Herd on YT. She has said within 15 min need to be up standing, 1 hr nursing and having first poo. Totally makes sense w Lady. Give her some time, it’ll come off. She is VERY protective of baby. Owner or not she says “stay away. She’s mine”! 😊😊 Watching for updates. 🥰🥰
I hope everything will be fine! Tomorrow is my birthday and this is a lovely early birthday smile for me! I'm sure all of us fans will constantly be checking for updates... 🤞
That foal is gorgeous and lively I always looked for 3 buttons only had to pull placenta once on horse but like Jim said cows it's not uncommon but that said we pray for best outcome and faith in God's plans
Best wishes tou you both and Lady & foal. I hope everything works out okay, I know you'll do the best by Lady. Everything crossed for you all. Regards Ian
Congratulations Brenda and jim and well done Lady ❤ personally l would say dont leave anything to chance, get the vet in asap.Best wishes and really looking forward to the next video a happy one l hope.Much love ❤
To all those who are talking down on these people for "not bringing the mare closer or for not putting her in the barn to foal", some mares don't like being in a confined space, and doing that could honestly cause more problems than having to make a hike to see them. They didn't have barns, or stalls, or even closed off pastures before we came along and did just fine. If you wanna baby your horses, fine. But don't talk down on someone else because they choose not to for their own reasons. The foal is healthy by the looks of it, and mama seems to be okay to. I'm sure that if there was a problem, a vet would be called, but honestly...the best way for us humans to help is to sometimes just get out of the way and let them do it on their own. Seriously...
Congratulations Lady! Hoping there is nothing too serious. And the vet can do something. The probabilities of twin foals is very rare in horses but can be fatal for the mare.At lease she's large and there's room to work with. I've seen bad cases in miniature horses and they are so small. Forward to the update.
I'll pray Lady will be okay. Her little foal surely is getting around good! It must have been 2 or 3 hours old when you filmed this as it was able to scamper around good with Mama Lady!!! I hope you'll be able to give us an update later today so we'll know how Lady and her foal are! I predicted a colt, so I'll be anxious to hear what she had. 🙏 for Lady!
I'm praying Lady will be alright. The foal looks good from what I see...I wonder if it's been able to nurse? I'm anxious to watch your next video update! 💕
Saudações do sul do Brasil 💞🇧🇷🇧🇷💞😍😍
Lady will be fine. I just have to believe that in my heart she is gonna be fine. I know so little about horses BUT it just looked to me that Lady was no bigger this pregnancy than with Bree so I’m leaning toward no second colt. Wishful thinking, maybe but that’s what I am going to be praying for. Maybe a freak thing with the afterbirth but I am going to pray for Lady to be just fine in the end and that colt to be healthy as well. Awaiting further updates but no news can be good news. Jim and Brenda…I’m not sure Bill or I will handle anything being wrong with Lady all too well! I think at times like this I might just be a bit too invested in the Gordon Farm!!!:):):)
Praying for Lady and her new foal and that ever thing is ok with Lady 🙏
Congratulations on the new foal. May God protect both mom and baby and heal everything necessary for the good of all. TYGA.
You guys have good eyes. I couldn’t see the horses until you were right up on them.

Jim and Brenda, I hope that Lady is ok. The foal looks good from a distance.
Wow, Thank you for sharing this exciting time on the farm.

Brenda & Jim, thank you for the update on Lady's beautiful new addition....continued thoughts & prayers for her!! 💕🙏
Thanks for showing the current situation. I hope she clears and has only the one foal. The little foal sure looks good!!
She's going to be alright. She's a survivor.

Might want to use chlorhexidine instead of iodine on the cord.
Congratulations Lady ....I hope everything is ok with you and your baby. Daddy Jim and Mama Brenda will look after you expertly ❤❤❤
This is the time for us city dwellers to embrace the dilemmas of the majestic life of reality on the farmer.
I hope Lady will be all right, she is my favorite of your horses.
Not to be rude or disrespectful, but if you have a mare getting ready to foal, why not keep them in a much smaller pasture or paddock in order to keep a closer watch for possible complications?
Seriously.
And buy a 4 wheeler.
My thoughts exactly
😂,
And talk nicer to the horses, and each other but be agreeable and a team.

Happy days a new foal. Now i pray for the good lord to finish out things for lady & foal to be alright.😇🙏🙏🙏. Prayers for Jim & Brenda too!!

Hoping things will go as planned that she drops her placenta. Beautiful foal!

I would call the vet immediately! And Lady should have been kept in a corral near the barn. 😢

I’ll be praying for a happy ending. It’s great to see the them both up and walking though good luck.

Any time i had to deal with a sketchy horse, i usually had a bit of feed in a container i could shake, pour a bit on my hand. Really helps sometimes.
I had a mare step on afterbirth and prolapsed . Thankfully vet able to safe her. No more foals for sure
Hope like crazy that everything turns out well for you all, and Bree makes a good big sister.
Congratulations
