I am actually in the opening credits of this movie. The second unit filmed the sequence with the bus in my neighborhood. I lived in the high desert of SoCal and they needed a neighborhood of suburban houses next to a desert. You can see me hop off the bus and walk away from the camera down the sidewalk in white shorts and high white socks. I will live forever on film! They paid me $10 bucks which I promptly spent on baseball cards, Mountain Dew, and cool ranch Doritos. Good times!

There is a documentary about the making of this film called “Scream, Queen!”. It centers mostly on the lead actor, Mark Patton, who was closeted during production of the film. He was eventually forced to come out, which demolished his acting career. I highly recommend it! It’s heartbreaking and funny.

This movie became a gay cult classic for having the first male scream queen and it's gay subtexts and I enjoy that it also has one of the darkest versions of Freddy next to Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It does get hindered though by some of it's weaker elements compared to 1, 3, and 7 but I definitely enjoy it more than 5 and 6. 4 is...there. It's fine.

This has to be your best. I saw this at 11 years old in 1985 in the theater. As a gay kid in the South, US this film spoke to me in a way that wasn’t articulated for years! Finally, in 2021 it gets the recognition it deserves. You must see Scream, Queen, boys!
Nightmare 2 is the infamously campy one. You should watch the section on it in the amazing documentary "Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy." You'll get a kick out of everyone's interviews about it.
I always interpreted it as jessy being the anchor to reality that allowed Freddy to affect the real world. The first movie showed Freddy it could be done and the second movie is his attempt to kill people in the real world without him having to go through dreams
The whole purpose of this film was for Freddy to become real long enough to infect everyone’s minds and live on. He only could affect Jesse because of his remains (glove) tying the spirit to that place. That’s why all the kids were safe for years. No one believed the story and just assumed the chick was nuts! But after the pool party no one doubts Freddy except for the liars trying to keep him lost to the past. Also Ronald Grady is an amazing character. He deserved better. How you gonna kill your potential boyfriend Jesse you dum dum!
I can't watch this film without thinking about how Mark Patton's burgeoning career was derailed because this film accentuated everything he was trying to hide from an intolerant audience/industry. Saw him speak at a screening for his doc (Scream, Queen!) and he really is an inspiration. I'm glad that Freddy's Revenge is being reassessed under a new, more progressive lens today. This movie broke most of the Freddy rules... Wes Craven was angry about how Bob Shaye (New Line CEO) changed his ending. Bob wanted sequels.. so he brought Freddy back at the end...so then they handed 2 off to a new team. Part 3 brings Wes Craven back as a co-writer.. along with Frank Darabont (Green Mile, The Mist, Shawshank, Walking Dead, The Blob). Chuck Russel (The Blob) directed it.. Part 3 basically sets the stage for all later Nightmare sequels, which get progressively goofier... until Wes Craven's New Nightmare, which brings the "Dark" Freddy back.
Some fans completely ignore 2 and go straight to 3 in regards to the sequels. In many ways 3 is a proper sequel in that it has Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, and John Saxon return from the first film. 2 has its merits though and Englund was great as Freddy again before the character became goofy.
The documentary that came out last year about how this ruined Mark's (who played Jesse) career and how he became a recluse in Mexico and his road to accepting himself as a gay icon in horror. It's called "Scream, Queen" and it is a really cool watch.
Yes, and for people who say it makes no sense, it actually does...Freddy CANNOT get to the new kids (non "Elm Street" kids), unless there's someone to take him to them. This is spelled out clearly in part 4 and 5. In this case, he used possession. I won't spoil 4 and 5, and how he gets around it for those who have not seen it. I will say....4 is great. 5 is garbage. :P
There is a theory in part 3 a character is mentioned off screen at the mental asylum as being so tormented that in order to stay awake, he sliced his own eyelids to stay awake. The theory is that it was Jessie.

It's weird, I don't really remember much, if anything, about the second movie, but what I do find it interesting is the flip from "if you sleep you die" to "if you sleep you kill".

It’s no secret that horror franchises break their own rules all the time. This also has the best version of Freddy in my opinion, he’s much darker and evil. Very excited for Dream Warriors, which I think is the best elm street movie of them all along with Wes Cravens New Nightmare

It’s completely ok to not like a movie; I personally always enjoy it for its interpretation of Freddy, which is much darker and sinister. The effects work are awesome in some scenes such as the Freddy bursting out of jesse’s body bit.
I watched this when I was way too young to understand the homoerotic subtext. When I grew up and realized I was gay myself, I realized only too well what it meant. The actor playing Jesse being gay himself just made it even more meaningful
Just waiting to see if they pick up on any of the homosexual undertones. This movie is also super confusing in terms of the lore since they were trying to move in different direction with this movie. As with every other big horror movie franchise, taking big swings or making changes to the formula are often not taken well by the fans.
The sequels always kind of made up the lore as they went along, introducing new elements that would never really be followed up on in other movies. Not just possession in 2, but dream powers in 3, a nursery thyme and a mirror in 4, it never really adds up. But they still did continuity better than the other horror franchises.
I absolutely love this one. Freddy is by far the scariest in this, dark and sinister. Plus it's definitely the best Freddy makeup and look. Fantastic score too!
I think the thing people get wrong about this movie is that Freddy isnt actually in the real world, it's a visual showing of how he has complete control of Jesse's body
Not as good as the original, but this is still a decent sequel. And yes, surprisingly full of gay metaphor (for 1985). The best Nightmare sequel for me is still Freddy's New Nightmare.
i mean some of the stuff was so on the nose though a bit past metaphor haha, the teacher got tied up in a bdsm style stripped naked and spanked with a towel on the ass. surprised the censores in 1985 let that through.i agree decent film but not as good as number 1.
I always saw this movie is that Freddy needed to cause fear in all the other children of Elm Street to invade their dreams. So he did this body possession plot to go back to his MO of haunting all the dreams of the children.
You didn't mention the best bit of the entire film when Brody is asked if his coming the party and he answers he can't because he threw his grandmother down the stairs, that line cracks me up every time
Nancy actually did weaken Freddy by taking back her fear. Which is why Fred was dormant until he could possess Jesse to get the kids to fear him again. I also really hope you watch The Dream Master and the rest of the sequels as well. 3-5 act like a trilogy within the series and I really love them. Especially 4.
People like to talk about how gay this movie is (it is) but I think the best part is Mark Patton as Jesse. He acts his ass off and is really believable during all his freakouts of the last 30 minutes

Great reaction guys. This is a favourite of mine. Watching it as a teenager in the late 80s as a gay teenager struggling with my sexuality it definitely hit a chord. Years later I realize the film is about coming to terms with being gay and very blatantly having homoerotic undertones (which was deliberately put in by the script writers) I found out years later that the actor playing Jesse was gay and would be the first Male scream "queen" lol 👍
This was the first film to show in Thurso when we got cinema back in 2017 and it was packed out. We later screened part 4 to full houses and an audience still enjoying this scary series of film.
I LOVE this one, mostly because it's absolutely the darkest, most "evil", and serious in tone out of all of them. Plus best practical effects of the series!
If I was to rank the Nightmare series it would be: 1. Dream Warriors 2. Nightmare 1 3. The Dream Master 4. New Nightmare 5. Freddy’s Revenge 6. Freddy Vs Jason 7. Nightmare (2010) 8. The Dream Child 9. Freddy’s Dead
The thing most people forget with these movies is that: from the first frame to the last frame, it's ALL a dream. These movies each explore socio-psychological concepts that if you think about it too much you will feel disgusted...hence the "nightmare". It's West Craven's signature throughout his work (even though he didn't make this one, Rob Shaye knew the throughline).
This movie is actually a metaphor for homosexuality and coming out. There is a documentary called Scream, Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street, where Mark Patton was the first openly gay character in the Elm Street franchise.
Even the screenwriter himself (who was gay) doesn't say that that was his intention. The director was completely oblivious to any of it. Feels like retrospectively repurposing the movie

Just because Mark Patton is obviously gay (even back in the day it was obvious the actor was gay, he didn't act 'hetero') doesn't mean Jesse the character was gay, or in the closet, or struggling with his sexuality, there was nothing of that in the script not even a hint.
It could be seen as allegory for gay people, but it's just like Matrix really, where the creators decided to change the discourse around the movie because the new trans narrative applies to them, even though the basic premise of Plato's Cave is the obvious inspiration.
One way fans have bridged the stories from Parts 1-3 is that in Part 1, after Nancy pulls Freddy from the dream world into the real world, and denies Freddy's power over her, she weakens him so that his spirit is trapped in the house. It's why the place is always hot. Five years later, Jesse gives Freddy the chance to come back, but he needs screams and souls to fully return to the dream world. So, he possesses Jesse to get the number of souls and fear that he needs to return to the dream world and get his revenge on the Elm Street kids. From then on, the house is Freddy's, which is why it becomes a staple in the franchise afterward. It's a stretch, but it does tie the three parts together.
One of the most coolest scenes in this this sequel is in the pool party. When Freddy's killing spree was cut short by the red head chick and her parents so he left. The way he exited is so GANGSTA it was so fucking cool! Freddy definitely showed some swag in that scene.
Scariest Fred ever. Still creepy, not yet an amateur comedian, still kept in shadow, best make-up design (by Kevin Yagher, who later created HBO's Crypt Keeper puppet), and those dark contacts that he only had in this film. He just looks peak terrifying here.
This is my fave Elm Street just because of the gayness. And Jesse in his undies and trackpants. That bulge did shit to me when I was young. Lol. Gradys hot af too. Love the Doc when the actress who plays Lisa says. They could've become the Will and Grace of Horror 😅
After watching A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3 feel free to skip directly to "Wes Craven's New Nightmare". You won't miss anything in between. An interesting thing of note: Both New Nightmare and John Carpenter's "In The Mouth Of Madness" came out within the same year. Both films deal with the same intriguing concept but of course in very different ways. Still, I always found that interesting. Watching the two films within a short period of time between them can make for an interesting comparison.
I saw this movie when I was 5 in a drive-in theatre. The scene where Freddy crawled out of the guys torso didn't let me sleep for a month lol but I have loved Freddy and horror ever since! Love your reactions, can't wait until number 3.

About the gym teacher: he was a creepy predator, and his intentions towards Jesse warranted what Freddy/Jesse did to him. By the way, I always thought that the more Freddy physically possessed Jesse, the more he was able to affect the waking world.

The third one's great and all the rest after that just get crazier/sillier but they're all still worth a watch. Some better than others. This one is different and a bit darker but I still liked it.
Its been said that this entire movie was a dream as you see with the opening and then how it ends because then it would explain all the rules that the film broke that didnt make sense in the film!!!
It's a strange movie but the one I come back to the most often simply because it's interesting. The themes about repressed homosexuality mixed with a different take on Kruger's power is really fascinating. It's not a "great" movie but I think it's a more interesting sequel than some of the "better" sequels.
Watching the videos out of order. This morning: The Usual Suspects, where Tom says it'll be the last video with the couch. This afternoon: This one where Tom says he'll never get rid of the couch.
The first movie is my all time favorite horror movie. I remember seeing it in the 80s when I was just a little kid, and it still makes me have to cover my eyes today LOL

It's weird, I don't really remember much, if anything, about the second movie, but what I do find it interesting is the flip from "if you sleep you die" to "if you sleep you kill".

Thanks for reacting to this one, it’s become a cult movie nowadays. I respect the movie’s use of practical effects and i quite like the possession angle this movie goes for. It’s no secret that horror franchises break their own rules all the time. This also has the best version of Freddy in my opinion, he’s much darker and evil. Very excited for Dream Warriors, which I think is the best elm street movie of them all along with Wes Cravens New Nightmare
@@ThomasMoore3 sorry to disagree, but a niche group of people do enjoy this movie, which defines it as a cult movie. It’s completely ok to not like a movie; I personally always enjoy it for its interpretation of Freddy, which is much darker and sinister. The effects work are awesome in some scenes such as the Freddy bursting out of jesse’s body bit.
I watched this when I was way too young to understand the homoerotic subtext.
When I grew up and realized I was gay myself, I realized only too well what it meant. The actor playing Jesse being gay himself just made it even more meaningful

Just waiting to see if they pick up on any of the homosexual undertones. This movie is also super confusing in terms of the lore since they were trying to move in different direction with this movie. As with every other big horror movie franchise, taking big swings or making changes to the formula are often not taken well by the fans.
The sequels always kind of made up the lore as they went along, introducing new elements that would never really be followed up on in other movies. Not just possession in 2, but dream powers in 3, a nursery thyme and a mirror in 4, it never really adds up. But they still did continuity better than the other horror franchises.
This film was all but ignored starting with part 3. 3 is pretty much the proper sequel to the first film in many ways.
You should definitely react to the third movie.

I absolutely love this one. Freddy is by far the scariest in this, dark and sinister. Plus it's definitely the best Freddy makeup and look. Fantastic score too!

I think the thing people get wrong about this movie is that Freddy isnt actually in the real world, it's a visual showing of how he has complete control of Jesse's body

Not as good as the original, but this is still a decent sequel. And yes, surprisingly full of gay metaphor (for 1985). The best Nightmare sequel for me is still Freddy's New Nightmare.
i mean some of the stuff was so on the nose though a bit past metaphor haha, the teacher got tied up in a bdsm style stripped naked and spanked with a towel on the ass. surprised the censores in 1985 let that through.i agree decent film but not as good as number 1.

I always saw this movie is that Freddy needed to cause fear in all the other children of Elm Street to invade their dreams. So he did this body possession plot to go back to his MO of haunting all the dreams of the children.
I was 15 years old when this movie was released.....I got to watch it at the cinema and loved every minute of it.
ANOES 2 was the first Freddy movie I ever saw. Watched it for the first time as a kid in 1988 and it scared the hell out of me

Nancy actually did weaken Freddy by taking back her fear. Which is why Fred was dormant until he could possess Jesse to get the kids to fear him again.
I also really hope you watch The Dream Master and the rest of the sequels as well. 3-5 act like a trilogy within the series and I really love them. Especially 4.

This is a favourite of mine. Watching it as a teenager in the late 80s as a gay teenager struggling with my sexuality it definitely hit a chord. Years later I realize the film is about coming to terms with being gay and very blatantly having homoerotic undertones (which was deliberately put in by the script writers)
I found out years later that the actor playing Jesse was gay and would be the first Male scream "queen" lol 👍
It was cool to have a male lead, and then a male lead who's figuring out that he's gay... Underrated.

The third one is the best of the sequels. A New Nightmare is decent too.
This was the first film to show in Thurso when we got cinema back in 2017 and it was packed out. We later screened part 4 to full houses and an audience still enjoying this scary series of film.
The score is terrifying in this movie. Your reactions to the tongue is priceless.
I LOVE this one, mostly because it's absolutely the darkest, most "evil", and serious in tone out of all of them. Plus best practical effects of the series!

The thing most people forget with these movies is that: from the first frame to the last frame, it's ALL a dream. These movies each explore socio-psychological concepts that if you think about it too much you will feel disgusted...hence the "nightmare". It's West Craven's signature throughout his work (even though he didn't make this one, Rob Shaye knew the throughline).

This movie is actually a metaphor for homosexuality and coming out. There is a documentary called Scream, Queen: My Nightmare On Elm Street, where Mark Patton was the first openly gay character in the Elm Street franchise.
Even the screenwriter himself (who was gay) doesn't say that that was his intention. The director was completely oblivious to any of it. Feels like retrospectively repurposing the movie

@@zolibako4816 There are no gay undertones in the writing of this movie. Just because Mark Patton is obviously gay (even back in the day it was obvious the actor was gay, he didn't act 'hetero') doesn't mean Jesse the character was gay, or in the closet, or struggling with his sexuality, there was nothing of that in the script not even a hint.
It could be seen as allegory for gay people, but it's just like Matrix really, where the creators decided to change the discourse around the movie because the new trans narrative applies to them, even though the basic premise of Plato's Cave is the obvious inspiration.

One way fans have bridged the stories from Parts 1-3 is that in Part 1, after Nancy pulls Freddy from the dream world into the real world, and denies Freddy's power over her, she weakens him so that his spirit is trapped in the house. It's why the place is always hot. Five years later, Jesse gives Freddy the chance to come back, but he needs screams and souls to fully return to the dream world. So, he possesses Jesse to get the number of souls and fear that he needs to return to the dream world and get his revenge on the Elm Street kids. From then on, the house is Freddy's, which is why it becomes a staple in the franchise afterward. It's a stretch, but it does tie the three parts together.
Underrated nightmare movie. Freddy at his most evil.

One of the most coolest scenes in this this sequel is in the pool party. When Freddy's killing spree was cut short by the red head chick and her parents so he left. The way he exited is so GANGSTA it was so fucking cool! Freddy definitely showed some swag in that scene.
Scariest Fred ever. Still creepy, not yet an amateur comedian, still kept in shadow, best make-up design (by Kevin Yagher, who later created HBO's Crypt Keeper puppet), and those dark contacts that he only had in this film. He just looks peak terrifying here.
This is my fave Elm Street just because of the gayness. And Jesse in his undies and trackpants. That bulge did shit to me when I was young. Lol.

After watching A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3 feel free to skip directly to "Wes Craven's New Nightmare". You won't miss anything in between. An interesting thing of note: Both New Nightmare and John Carpenter's "In The Mouth Of Madness" came out within the same year. Both films deal with the same intriguing concept but of course in very different ways. Still, I always found that interesting. Watching the two films within a short period of time between them can make for an interesting comparison.
I saw this movie when I was 5 in a drive-in theatre. The scene where Freddy crawled out of the guys torso didn't let me sleep for a month lol but I have loved Freddy and horror ever since! Love your reactions, can't wait until number 3.

About the gym teacher: he was a creepy predator, and his intentions towards Jesse warranted what Freddy/Jesse did to him.
By the way, I always thought that the more Freddy physically possessed Jesse, the more he was able to affect the waking world.

The third one's great and all the rest after that just get crazier/sillier but they're all still worth a watch. Some better than others. This one is different and a bit darker but I still liked it.
I liked part 4 a lot actually, super fun movie. The only ones I really dislike are 5 and 6.
Its been said that this entire movie was a dream as you see with the opening and then how it ends because then it would explain all the rules that the film broke that didnt make sense in the film!!!

It's a strange movie but the one I come back to the most often simply because it's interesting. The themes about repressed homosexuality mixed with a different take on Kruger's power is really fascinating. It's not a "great" movie but I think it's a more interesting sequel than some of the "better" sequels.
