    Better pin a comment here about future parts. The BBC is terrible for copyright and in the past I have had hell and all dealing with the copyright claims on these videos. For now, the full reviews of this series are on hold whilst I focus on my other videos (mainly the Tudor Rants and others). I am currently doing a quick review series of Elizabeth R and after that I may do some quick reviews of this series as well to give everyone a brief overview of the remaining episodes to keep you all entertained.
    I will definitely return and finish off the full reviews of this when I feel a bit braver and perhaps find a way to edit the clips down enough! Can't say when that will be, but I think the rest of the year might be taken up with Tudor Rant videos and the like.

      What about perhaps doing a review without using scenes themselves, only mentioning them? Those watching will get what you're referring to, and those who've not watched can get the context if they have even a rough understanding of Tudor history.

      It is important to highlight the presence of JANE PARKER, it has been said many times that she hated sister-in-law, but there is no evidence of this🤔hated her husband George Boleyn❓maybe it's just part of the fiction in the movies🔮🦄Through the centuries, she is remembered as «the Infamous Lady Rochford»🎭

    I found that "pray for a son" part weirdly terrifying, maybe the camera angle but it's also the message, and you see it from Anns perspective so even not being a woman I can FEEL the fear, the message is "pray for a son...because your security depends on it, god knows what happens to you if you fail"

    Finally watched this complete set and fell in love with it. From Henry to his wives, each had something devious about it. My favourite thing is how the actor for Henry sort of rolls up his sentences like he's about to swing for a punch: "WeeeeeeLLLLLLLLLLLL Madam, I am grateful for your hospitality this day." He's charismatic and terrifying: you want to love him but should definitely avoid him at all costs. Cranmer, Norfolk, and Cromwell all done expertly too.
    My only complaint was the Anne of Cleaves Episode. The whole German King with the 2 wives sneaking in, everyone meeting in the Queen's apartments, Anne proposing the annulment. It felt like they were trying to guess what happened in real life, or to condense a lot of history into one scene.

    Keith Mitchell is superb in this series. How he plays Henry from being the charming young attractive renaissance king to the fat paranoid tyrant is excellent. He IS Henry to me, a big, powerful man who commands a room. The actors who play Anne and Cromwell are also excellent. I particularly like how Cromwell is portrayed as a horrible, self-serving sociopath.
    It's a pity there are so many important events that happened during this time that were omitted in the series. I do find Anne quite an interesting person in history, and would have liked another episode dedicated to her (or at least another half an episode). The death of Catherine of Aragon and Henry's head injury when he fell from his horse are incredibly important in the fall of Anne. Henry's jousting accident and head injury also changed him as a person, especially as the fall opened up an old leg would that became very painful and cause him years of distress and he was never the same man again.

    On the day Anne had her final miscarriage she had walked in on Jane Seymour sitting on the kings knee......she had known of his attraction to Jane for some time but had hoped it was one of his passing fancies, now she was confronted with evidence of his affection for Jane. This information was given to the Lady Mary 10 days after Anne's execution by the woman who had been nurse maid and governess to all the royal children - Lady Bryan, who had been in charge of Lady Mary since she had been bastardized and sent away from court.....now they were close, and Lady Bryan had been one of Anne's ladies in waiting in the Tower after Anne's arrest. She and her family were also close to Jane Parker (George Boleyn's wife) and Janes parents. They knew more about Janes unhappy marriage than anyone, and after visiting Lady Mary and imparting the real cause of Queen Anne's marriage, she went to visit Janes parents too. It was a small world.

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think it was the same day as the miscarriage, but it was all within a short time frame. Henry had his jousting accident a day or two before Anne’s miscarriage and I doubt he was well enough to be flirting with Jane Seymour on his knee a day or so after he nearly died. I think the Seymour incident must have happened first, then the jousting accident, then the miscarriage. What a terrible amount of stress Anne must have been under. First she sees her husband with another woman, then he nearly dies (and just imagine what would happen to her, with so many enemies around her, with only an infant daughter and an unborn child to rival Mary’s claim to the throne). No wonder she miscarried so soon afterwards.

    The video is great. Really enjoyed it. I loved the series when I was younger, and think it is by far one f the most accurate portrayals of the king and the wives. However, from what I have read since over the decades I am not sure Anne was as fearful as this so early on, and had no idea of the plot against her. Although we now know she was executed, no woman had ever been been beheaded in England to that point and so I doubt this possibility ever crossed her mind.

      Oh yeah, in fact I would say there are Queen consorts who have actually done far worst that got off lightly (Edward II's wife Isabella was basically allowed to live quite conformable on her estates despite deposing her own husband!) And as we know, the charges against Anne were sketchy at best, I believe it was in Chapuy's letters that he claimed members of the court were taking bets on whether George Boleyn would be found innocent, and the majority were betting he would.
      Still, the scene was apparently based off of Charles Wriothesleys Chronicle, although it was written nearly a quarter of a century later:
      onthetudortrail.com/Blog/2011/10/18/anne-boleyn%E2%80%99s-arrival-at-the-tower-of-london/
      I will have to look through the state papers (which are all online) and see if there are any proper contemporary sources that describe her arrival at the Tower.

      It actually goes a bit deeper then that. Society of the Tudor era was highly stratified. In the case of women they usually went from being ruled by their fathers or brothers to their husbands (except if they took holy vows-interestingly being a nun was a way for women to pursue power in their own right although they were still subject to male priests and clergy). All this is to say that even a Princess or Queen in her own right would be subject to her husband if she married (as she would be expected to) and this presented a problem. In the case of Henry’s daughters it would then become a question of who they marry. Marrying a foreign Prince (as Mary did when she married King Philip the II of Spain) ran the risk of compromising English autonomy and alienating your subjects. However marrying an English nobleman wouldn’t be much better because you would run the risk in choosing of alienating the other noble houses. Elizabeth ultimately got around all of this by choosing to dedicate herself to the throne and never marrying, but that did mean she was unable to produce an heir and the Tudor dynasty ended with her (though she had James VI on hand as her successor).
      All this is to say that even if Henry had been confident in his daughters’ ability to rule, to his mind as women they were destined to be ruled by their husbands and thus a male heir was seen as a safer bet.

    On the day Anne miscarried at about 4 months pregnant, she had caught Henry dallying with Jane Seymour on his knee. This information came from Lady Mary herself, who had friends among the queen's ladies. Anne had also witnessed expensive gifts coming from the king to Jane, including a pendant with his picture in it. They really did have a fight where Anne snatched that chain from her neck and injured her hand. There were lots of forces and cliques working against Ann and the Boleyns. They had to go to make way for Janes family, for her brothers to be promoted to positions the Boleyns had held. Anns miscarried baby was described as a beautiful boy.

Many of these stories are second and third hand and more. Told decades later. Even a hundred years later. He supposedly only ever spoke to Anne once. I doubt it was to flirt with her. He was just expendable in the eyes of Cromwell - a nobody. Cromwell had a lot against Brereton who had been a thorn in his side for a long time and used this fiasco to get rid of him. Weston was a known womanizer as was George Boleyn who it appears his wife hated him. Sir Henry Norris had enemies and the king should have known this - his most loyal and longest serving servant. Later Henry did acknowledge how these men came to fall with Anne. He referred to it when the court infighting became too much and faction was fighting faction. He also warned Jane Seymour, twice, not to meddle in politics and referred to Anne Boleyn and her failed delegation to Germany to court the Lutherans support for England against France and Spain. And his marriage to her.

I have read her book about Mary and her books about Henry Vlll and his court. I've read every book by every author I can get my hands on. Alison Weir puts forward all the arguments, gossip and varying stories and figures out which are most credible. Who were witnesses there at the time. Like the story that Smeaton was tortured. There is no evidence for this as witnesses at his execution said he walked unaided to the block and had no visible injuries. Whereas Anne Askew had been racked and couldn't walk and had to be carried to her execution in a chair, as did the elderly infirm Cranmer. But some kind of pressure was brought to bear on Smeaton, such as: "subscribe Mark and we will see what comes of it". He may have been promised his life in return for a false confession, where he was made to implicate the others. But he was tricked. The king himself questioned Norris and offered him a pardon if he confessed to adultery with the queen but Norris refused, saying he would never condemn an innocent person - the queen. But this only made Henry more suspicious, that he was standing up for the queen, and he had Norris taken to the Tower.

    This series is back on Amazon's BritBox, and I've re-watched it for the first time since childhood. Back then, while I knew the broad strokes of the history and enjoyed watching for confirmation of what I knew, I was mostly blind to the acting quality and discussion of politics.
    My conclusion now is that the Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn episodes--while both filled with good acting--are actually the worst episodes of the six. My favorite is the Anne of Cleves episode; it's funny, sophisticated in its political analysis, and the character of Anne is so charming. It's an excellent self-contained play. The Catherine Parr episode is probably my second favorite. And the Jane Seymour episode is just delightfully odd and off-putting, almost as if David Lynch wrote that one.

As I mentioned there are some errors (Lady Rochford being one, although I think Hillary Mantel herself said she knew she got it wrong but needed the character to be that way) but compared to all the other Tudor related dramas we have had of late, it at least tries to resemble the era. One criticism I might have is that Cromwell is perhaps a little too sympathetic since so far we have barely seen his involvement with the monasteries whilst people like Sir Thomas More are perhaps a bit too negatively portrayed. I will probably give that series a review at some point as well.

This was actually one of my least favorite episodes, but to ur point of how Anne felt towards Catherine and Mary, or if she felt sympathy towards them - the answer is quite frankly and plainly no. Anne is even on record saying of Catherine "I would rather see her hanged than acknowledge her as my mistress." Even after Elizabeth was born, she gave special instructions for Mary to become maid in her daughter's household, with further instructions for them to hit Mary, and curse in her presence - especially if Mary ever brought up her mother, or her former title of princess.

      Anne actually tried to pass an olive branch to Mary after Katherine's death and I believe she said her greatest regret was her past cruelty to her. That doesn't excuse her behaviour, but I think it can go a way for us to at least forgive her for it. If we think of everyone around the king, they all were pretty ruthless and ambitious, or at least self interested. If you have one person with the power to make or break people on a whim, everyone around him is going to be corrupted by that. You could even take the view that had Katherine and Mary not been so stubborn and self-interested, and recognized for the good of the kingdom it was important for Henry to have a male heir, they could have both been treated much better. I think there's plenty of blame to go around to everyone, but the worst of them all was the one with all the power, Henry. After all, things didn't improve for Mary after Anne's death, only when she finally bent to Henry's will. Was Anne the one who made Mary's life miserable or was she only a convenient scapegoat because no one really wanted (or dared) to blame the king?

      @@graphiquejack Anne certainly did her part to make sure Catherine and Mary were disrespected, scorned and miserable. I have never understood the argument that the terrible treatment both endured was to some measure their own fault due to their “stubbornness.” It’s called deeply held religious conviction and the belief that you have well and truly been his lawful wife and true queen for decades - not his whore or concubine. And in a time when being labeled a bastard was truly shocking and diminished your perceived value in society, it is perfectly understandable why Catherine would fight to keep her only surviving child from being labeled as such - particularly as she knew it to be a lie.

    sorry, I got one more question, what do you think things would have been like If Henry has married Anne Boleyn When Catherine of Aragon has died instead trying to get annulment, like would Anne stilled be behead and what people reaction toward Anne be if annulment and split from the church has never has happened for her get the blame ?

    • @The_Laughing_Cavalier
      @The_Laughing_Cavalier  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends when Catherine dies. She might have died in 1536 historically but that may have been brought on by what Henry had done to her. Anne would be getting on a bit as would be Henry, although both are still capable of bearing children. Henry marrying her might have caused a bit of a stir since she was basically from the gentry rather than nobility or royalty, she would still have plenty of enemies and would try to get Henry to support France, which would annoy the HRE. I would probably have to sit down and think a bit about what would happen to be honest!

    The handkerchief thing never happened, they have gotten that story mixed up with one about Elizabeth l. And in any case, the queen and her ladies were expected to favour various knights and tie their ribbons and things to their lances before a joust. No, Norris was arrested because Smeaton, under some compulsion had confessed and he had been made to name others......he named Norris and the others......A note was sent to the king at the joust imparting this news......when he received the note the king jumped up leaving the queen there with no explanation and began riding back to Whitehall, it was only then he sent for Norris and questioned him closely on the ride but Norris denied it and offered to fight in any place to prove his innocence. The king offered him pardon if he would confess but Norris still refused. Thus he was arrested and taken to the Tower, and George Boleyn was the next to be arrested.

    Too old to be playing anne boleyn

    • @MrWig100
      @MrWig100 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It depends how old Ann was at the time she married Henry. I'm no expert but Wikipedia says she was born some time between 1501 and 1507 which puts her maximum age at around 35 when she died. Dorothy Tutin would have been around 40 when the play was made, perhaps a year or so younger, so I wouldn't say she was too old. If Ann had been born in 1506 then Tutin would have been a bit too old. Either way it was a fine performance.

    • @laurahubbard6906
      @laurahubbard6906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The series was made for a time when we had much smaller-screen TVs, so the age difference doesn't show as much. Besides, the performance was very strong and might not have been within the range of a younger actress.
