My mom said when she and her best friend were in high school back in 1979 they would go to the garment district in LA to buy Dittos! She said they were cutest pants ever!! 💞

Sobre los patrones te recomendaría hacer un curso de patronaje para poder patronar directamente en el papel (sin pasar por el maniquí). Diseñas el vestido y luego ya sabes como hacer el patrón en papel y haces la prueba con tejido barato (como estás haciendo) pero de esta forma no tienes que diseñar el vestido encima del maniquí y trasladarlo al papel sino que directamente ya sabes qué medidas hacer en el papel.
Lo que te ha dicho tu hermana de como cortar el tejido entiendo que es que tienes que poner el patrón sobre el tejido en paralelo o perpendicular (siguiendo el hilo/sentido del tejido) si lo pones en diagonal gana elasticidad, se puede ceder o también se usa cuando quieres que una parte tenga caída. Por ejemplo el vuelo de un vestido queda más bonito y con más movimiento si se hace al bies (en diagonal).
¡Ah! Y cuando no quieras hacer una pinza (dart) normalmente puedes esconderla en un corte. Por ejemplo bajo el pecho, perpendicular al pecho... también se puede usar como parte del diseño. Además es más fácil coser un corte que una pinza porque si la pinza no la coses bien te queda ese huequito como el que te ha quedado en la prueba, nuestra profesora le llamaba culo de pollo XD
Por cierto, cuando quieras hacer un vestido de noche que luego puedas usar en el día a día te recomiendo en la fase del diseño pensar un vestido que puedas modificar luego, ya sea dejando tejido sobrante para luego cubrir más piel o haciendo una forma pensada para luego poder ser modificada fácilmente.
Ojo al coser tejidos tan "viscosos" como los de baño, rayón... los que resbalan tanto y son tan elásticos, necesitas una aguja especial (de punta redonda) para que no resbale y no se rompa.
Por cierto si el negro no te inspira porque eres más colorida yo había pensado que podrías haber escogido un tejido negro tornasolado que algo de color tendría según como le de la luz o hacer un vestido muy colorido sencillo y encima poner transparencias en negro ;)

gurl if I knew I would!! All I know is that from the main street where we were walking- like where they have all those giant corner stores? Yeah it wasnt on that main street, it was off of it tho. Also I paid 4 dollars per yard and that was the cheapest we could find! Take a screenshot of the dress and take it with you!

You should have went to the thrift stores for fabric first. They have so much good vintage pieces in the linens, curtains, clothing, dresses etc... that you could have upcycled something fabulous.
