DINAH WASHINGTON (Bewigged and beguiling) Jazz History #40

  • Dinah Washington had one of the more unique voices in jazz. She would be unmistakable if not for the resemblance to Nancy Wilson which can trick a listener. An undeniably great and influential jazz singer, Dinah also had a foot firmly planted in the R & B world, and her biggest hits were in that genre, to the point that she earned a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She was a dynamic presence, partial to extravagant wigs and furs (and reputedly a fur toilet seat), outspoken and at times, ribald. Trumpet players owe her a debt of gratitude for bringing together the unlikely trio of Clark Terry, Clifford Brown and Maynard Ferguson.

I love that being a Nancy Wilson fan, and my Mom made me a Dinah Washington fan. I love Dinah's Time Out for Tears. Bridge Over Troubleld Water made me a lifetime Aretha Franklin fan. And hearing Nancy Wilson sing Stevie's All in Love is Fair on stage at Detroit's Masonic Auditorium sealed the deal❤

Glad to hear that. The Jazz History series attracts a small but enthusiastic following, like history in general I suppose.

This is an under-appreciated artist! I adore her timbre, that round, compact laser beam of sound that could belt like nobody else, and her satiny, elegant ease was always near.

At least Dinah enjoyed a bit of a hit.

That Dinah Jams album might be in my top 5 favorite albums ever. Dinah is amazing and all the soloists are in crazy good form. I'd give the edge to Clark Terry though.

It would be a hard call for me between Clifford and Clark, and kudos to Maynard for holding his own! In any case, the recording is a classic.
