OhSnap Grip Review - Numbing?

  • So this thing called the OhSnap Grip showed up in my Intagram feed a few months back. Claimed to be a PopSocket killer and had a bunch of influencers telling me how great the product is. So like the blind consumers I am, I bought a couple. And it’s been a few terrible weeks with this product.
    Our biggest complaint? Numb finger.

So the OhSnap Grip is essentially two pieces. You have a magnet that’s stuck to your iPhone or case and the grip. Now installation is simple right? All you have to do is stick the magnet to the iPhone and viola, everything works right? Sort of. You need to “Eyeball” the center of your iPhone and really hope you literally stick the landing of the metal piece in the right spot.
I personally think they needed to come up with a neat way to help you align everything properly. At least with a bare iPhone, you can use the logo to help get the magnet on point. On a case? Good Luck.
One of the great things about this product is that if you listen to the marketers, they say that the product is ready in 20 seconds. BUT if you follow, going to assume engineers who built the product, they say that you should wait overnight for the adhesive to cure. Who do you believe?
Now once you’ve thumbed the center of your iPhone or case, the next step is to put the base on it and live your carefree, hand-free iPhone life right? The marketing fluff and the ads sure makes it seem like that.
BUT this product has a fatal flaw. It makes your iPhone annoying to use. The OhSnap grip basically sandwiches your finger between the back of the iPhone and the OhSnap Grip. That get’s annoying and reduces the long-term usage potential of your iPhone. It does get better over time since you get use to it but after a couple of minutes, it because noticeable.
On top of sandwich finger, depending on the size of your iPhone, having that weight of the iPhone sit on the end of your finger get’s hard to deal with which again, reduces the long-term usage potential of the iPhone. Especially when compared to the PopGrip which places the weight of the iPhone between your fingers.
Another downside is the fact that you have to permanently mount a magnet to your iPhone. As an accessory reviewer, that’s a big annoyance because with the magnet, I can’t use anything else. I can’t swap out an iPhone accessory better suited for whatever I’m going to do on that day. At least with the PopSocket Grip I can remove it if I don’t want to use it for the day. And at least I can use it with a case.
When it comes to wireless charging with the OhSnap Grip, we were able to use most of our Qi-chargers and Grip portion removed. The OhSnap Grip also worked with MagSafe Accessories as well BUT only with chargers that laid flat on a table. The OhSnap Grip couldn’t stay on our current favorite MagSafe charger, the Belkin Boost Charge Pro with the Grip portion attached.
Now if you’re looking for a Qi-charger that works with the grip portion attached, OhSnap does sell one themselves. Now we went and wasted money on a car mount and qi-charger from OhSnap and both are general disappointments.
For the Qi-charger, our charge tests have it charging an iPhone from 10-50% in 100 mins which is quite slow. It ranks in the bottom 1/3 in terms of charge speed. And seriously what’s the point of the Qi-charger? The beauty of wireless charging is that you can easily remove your device from the charged. Having to physically remove this incredibly show charger off a flat surface is silly. You’re basically still unplugging your device.
With the car vent, OhSnap went all out and source a generic vent mount and slapped a fitted piece of metal for the grip. That’s kwality with a kw and not a qu. Hey it works but I’m not sure how these accessories fit into OhSnap’s mission of not making accessories that don’t suck.

I’ve had mine for about a year. Overtime it does get easier on the finger with regular use. To wirelessly charge, I take the ohsnap off for it to work on some of them. I haven’t had much luck charging my phone with 3 - in 1 stands due to the ring part on it. To get the ohsnap off, I stick my nail between the ohsnap and metal ring and pull it off. It’s definitely convenient for one handed use.

I tried the OhSnap but, yes, it made my finger hurt and then eventually become numb. A great concept, but just didn't work for me (although my friend loves it). I still prefer PopSockets. They are so interchangeable now and the whole system is fantastic. I use the Popgrip slide and the Magsafe wallet case for my iPhone with an Otterbox magsafe case. These are great because I can swap them out depending on what I am doing and I can also change the pop-tops. I have the vent mount for the car too and that also is great (although the Ohsnap mount was definitely more secure).

I picked up the MagSafe Pop Socket for my new 13 Pro Max based on the reviews and comments off this channel. I used to use the Oh Snap 2.0 on my old iPhone 7+ without any case and it was great. I never had any numbness and I also liked that I could place the ring a little lower than center on the back of the phone as it just felt more natural down there and I could get to the bottom of the huge phone more easily.
I have to say that the MagSafe PopSocket is better because I can remove it easily, but in it’s day to day use…the Oh Snap was more natural feeling to hook a finger under it rather than slide a finger on either side of the PopSocket. Plus, I wish it sat lower on the 13 Pro Max…man, that’s a huge phone and it just feels more precarious to reach the opposite bottom corner with my thumb. Anyway…neither of these things are perfect…but it seemed like there was a bit of hyperbole in their negative opinion of the Oh Snap solution.

I have an iphone 12 pro max but have small hands so need some kind of support but also wanted something that is easily removed so I can use the magsafe charging. I bought a bunch of magnetic plates/bases from SUPERONE via Amazon and attached the popsocket bases to a few and attached a 360 degree ring to another one. The magnetic plates/bases I bought are actually strong - I had bough a 2 pack on sale and went back for more colors when I realized the magnets were strong. I’m also using with a magsafe case so i’m sure that helps too!! I did see the OhSnap as an option but I decided against b/c the elastic looked like it would be uncomfortable over time…also did not want the ring permanently attached to a case! So I am happy that this video confirms I made the right choice to avoid that OhSnap product!!! Thank you for doing what you guys do!!

They definitely should make that review n test out the magnetic strength, possibly a stress test on their new band as well, how strong is it w/o the metal ring on a magsafe case with a rlly strong magsafe magnet in a magnet, n if wireless charging works now. I hav one myself, but I'm an s21 ultra user n I'm still curious about what they honestly think about the new 2.0, if they delivered or not. So far tho... I've been a bit apprehensive about this since it feels like the 2.0 created more problems than solving them.
(Stuff like the new magnet seemingly weaker than their 1.0, their new band is thinner but supposedly is made of stronger material, wireles charging seems to still b an unresolved issue, n plenty more frustration from ppl who hav invested in the 1.0 ecosystem n the lack of backward compatibility or support for helping 1.0 users transition to 2.0)

Always a great review helpful and honest ! Question: as my go to review gurus (and likely to have a bunchh of stuff to try) I have the iPhone 12 mini with a Mous case 3.0 limitless walnut (autoalign) which I love but they don' t make the new MagSafe 4.0 walnut case for the 12mini FRUSTRING!! What if I was to just get the Ohsnap magnet ring (without the loop) and used that on the case with the popsocket grip? would this hold? would I still be able to use my Apple travel MagSafe duo charger with the case and magnet on? (Of course would need to remove the popsocket grip.) would love to see if this works as a work around to have yours and mine favourite case with the popsocet grip which you also like without having to spend a bundle of replacing everything I have! Would love to see some videos of ways to trick or modify products to make your favourites work.

I tried the ohsnap grip because I think pop sockets look like crap. I followed the instructions for the adhesive and waited 8 hours before trying it. Sadly, the walnut on the Mous case didn’t like their adhesive and it fell off the first time I used it. I applied some super glue and tried again and it’s been on it ever since. I like it as a stand but like you pointed out it doesn’t work nearly as well for a grip. Actually it worked best as a fidget device because I rotate it and mess with the stand part constantly.

  • @batvon39
    @batvon39 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Was waiting on this one!
I've had mine for about 8 months now, and I can say the tightness problem does get a lot better with use and now I never even realize it. The rubber gets looser, but the drawback is the "snap" part doesn't lay as flush with the ring. But I did notice it was really tight when I first got it. I might try for their warrantee because they do claim the band will not stretch out. If they put an extra weaker magnet in the middle of the snap portion to hold it in place, this would've solved the stretch out issue.
Strange con, but I realized when I try to Qi charge it, the steel ring gets super hot. I don't like Qi charging so it's not an issue for me, but something to note. Also, the magnetic grip is REALLY hard to remove from the phone. Like so hard, I didn't realize it was removable and I ordered the replacement ring like an idiot, thinking the removability/steel ring was a feature sold separately. So it won't come off when you don't want it to, but it is a real pain when you want it to.
I have it attached to my daily case, so no fear in getting the ring off the phone. I had to remove the ring once and using a thin card makes it pretty easy. But floss is probably the best way. With it removed from the steel ring, I can use the phone as normal with other accessories. But yeah, the large steel ring on my leather and wood case is an eyesore. It is tough to use with other accessories the grip installed, given it makes the phone considerably thicker, but I have a mount like Val's in my car and just need to secure it a little better to make sure it stays.
It's a win for me in my world, but I can see it's not for everyone. I was looking for an upgrade from the phone ring I had on my last phone and this definitely fit the bill while allowing for the wireless features of my iPhone 12 Pro. Haven't seen anything that would fit my needs better.

I agree. I was a die hard Loopy case person and decided to try the Oh Snap and it solved a lot of the issues I had with the Loopy but did sacrifice some comfort, but honestly, I don’t need to hold my phone for long periods of time so it works for me.

I’m also a fan of the product, bought it off Kickstarter and I love it. I also use the Oh Snap car vent mount combined with the wireless charger that’s shown in the video. Works out to be the best magnetic vent mount I’ve ever tried and I’ve tried a lot. And that combination allows you to turn the phone easily if that’s your thing, unlike that pointless, silly metal plate that’s also shown in the video.

Would love to see your review on the new Snap 3 Pro from OhSnap when it comes out as it basically eliminates every con you mentioned in this video
I do agree with your cons, but you really exaggerated how bad they were. I don’t know many people that use their iPhone bare, so you would install this on a case more often than not which takes away the con of it being like a bad tattoo.
The finger pinching I like for 2 reasons, I know my phone is securely on my finger and won’t go anywhere, and if I’ve been using my phone long enough that it hurts my finger then I know I need to stop using my phone.
Finally, being magnetic is a HUGE DEAL. You totally downplayed how big of a deal that is and from the other grips you mentioned it’s the only one that is magnetic. Being able to stick this on a fridge or gym equipment or anywhere I put the sticky magnetic plates is a complete game changer and the number one reason I like ohsnap so much more than other grips. Also, it slides into pockets so much better than any other grip I’ve seen and it’s still just there when you need it.
It does suck that they don’t have a better way to help you centre the ring on the phone though, but that’s solved with the Snap 3 Pro.
Also, I do not work for OhSnap, I was a Kickstarter backer with the original and then got the grip when it came out too.

Have been using this for a year, and I like being able to use one finger and not drop it, and it does get a bit looser over time, and I kind of like twist easel feature portrait/landscape, but...it also twists subluxes my knuckle, and they sell a white nationalist all-black US flag design. When I messaged them about this, no response. So you have to wonder who's running the show over there, Dale Backus (the guy running the show over there).

That's because they both were intent on making up stuff to support their OBVIOUS goal to trash the product. It's just not a esthetically pleasing - really? And the pop socket is? Gimme a break. My finger gets sore - hmm, if you have you fingers in any device for extended periods of time, it will get sore and you need to get a real life outside of your stupid phone.

*In short:* I'm an s21 ultra user who liked magsafe related accessories and fortunately/unfortunately ended up with the oh snap and came out feeling like I got the most value out of the metal ring n a build design it had rather than the product itself 😅
*(Read the bottom if u want to 😆)*
I'm an s21 ultra user that bought this product to b able to do those magsafe stuff and I've had it for about 5 months. From my experience, the whole 20 sec or 24hrs wait for the metal ring to stick varies depending on the case (I had the spigen s pen case n Torras(?) Black clear case n it only took about 20-30min for it to stick with spigen but needed a whole day for the torras). I do agree that it is like a bad tattoo, but for me, it's a bad tattoo that's better than having to use those DIY magsafe magnet rings especially since having magnets in the back of the s21 ultra fucks up the s-pen functionality... which leads me to another upside about the oh snap is that for some reason, the magnets on the oh snap doesn't seem to affect the s-pen functionality! I tried a copy-cat moft wallet (which claimed to hav stronger magnets than moft n I had the flashback of watching this channel review the moft wallet so I looked at other alternatives to moft wallet) n a magsafe plate (used to attach adhesive popsocket on it before popsocket came out with their own magsafe popsocket), but both of the magnets just distorts the s-pen when writing. Another thing that I did appreciate from Oh Snap other than the s-pen thing n from what u guys had listed in pros section was not the product itself but the build design it had that prevented it from sliding off the metal ring. My s21 ultra with a case was quite heavy and none of the magsafe diy rings or the metal rings could solve the issue of my s21 just sliding off. One of the accessories had rubber layer to add more grip to the device but i wasn't quite sure where I could get a rubber ring of the size I needed n was worried that the extra rubber layer might impede the magnets pull on the metal ring. Then I compared the products to oh snap n saw that the reason y they weren't sliding was bc there was a circle indent/bezel under the oh snap with a diameter that was the same size as the hole of the metal rings. From then on, I've basically just make circle cutouts n stuck them on any of my magsafe products just so that they can "snap" onto the metal ring which also added more grip so they don't loosely rotate for no reason (as I was dealing w/ magnets to metal rather than magnets to magnets and I don't have that magsafe "magnet tail")

I had mine for over a year, lost the top part of it, or I thought I did. So, I removed the ring to put something else on, only to find the top again about a month later 🙃 😐 🙄. I personally loved using it but was a pain in the ass in the car as they claimed. I always used two fingers instead of one; it was never comfortable with one. Waiting for my 2.0 version to ship.
