As an American, my only experience with these came by way of my Father, who spent enough time in Europe with the U.S. Army to become seriously infatuated with (among others) the Daimler-Jag V8. He told me about them for years until we came across one at an auto show. He actually owned a pre-WWII Mercedes sedan, a V8 BMW, and a Beetle he picked up new right at the factory. While working for a major German distributor during his time off-base, he got to set up new Porsche Speedsters for delivery, lapping them on the banked track behind the dealership, with many going to Allied officers. He also claims to be the first person to drive the NSU rotary engine in its test mule chassis, blasting laps at a then mind blowing 8-9000 rpm. Pretty exciting stuff for a 19 year old kid who'd grown up building stripped down flathead V8 1930's Ford roadsters....
Jag got 2 good V8 engines by the takeover, but failed to make good use of either. The 2.5 V8 when fitted the Mk2 Jag was a lighter and more powerful than the 2.4 inline6 by Jag. The 4.4 V8 beat the Jag 3.8 in a similar way. But the idiots at Jag suffered from the not invented here syndrome and refused to take these engines seriously.
@@basilpunton5702 - it's an interesting argument; if the absolute potential increase in displacement created by 'v'-type engines isn't required, is the inline the better type? Many German and English companies seem to have favored the inline, while here in the US "V8's are great", and sixes (even v-type) seem to be considered dull.
@@floydblandston108 I was alluding to the weight and power of the V8 engines. You are right about the differences between cultures. The Jag i6 were heavy and lower power compared to the V8's. I do not care what is the cylinder count. At 2.5l it is realistically top of 4 and bottom of 8 cylinders, there are exceptions mainly diesel 4's. Weight/power/fuel usage are what is most important.
It's worth recording that the Royal Family were almost exclusively Daimler users until the present Queen changed her allegiance to Rolls Royce in the 1950s. One reason was that the patented Daimler "fluid flywheel" preselector transmission made them ideal for low-speed parade work. From the mid 30s the British Daimler company made more money from their bus chassis than from the cars, the last buses coming off the production line in 1981. That same transmission which made for ease of driving was still a major selling point.
No mention of Daimler buses that were made in the United Kingdom. The last model was the Daimler Fleetline, a double deck bus chassis that was very popular with municipal bus operators until production ended in the early 1980's.
Before you say it, Brits say "DAY-MLER", Germans say "DIE-MLER". I've picked one way to say it and I've stuck with it. To explain why Daimler became to use the Mercedes name, it was a brand name that they eventually used as their company name, maybe because of the confusion of using "Daimler".
When I was a boy we had a 2.5litre V8 in the Jag Mk2 body. Perhaps some info on Lady Docker and the Docker Daimlers that pushed the company into more financial distress. Daimler Dart, possibly first fibreglass bodied car. 4.2 and 2.5 V8 engines were excellent. But what happened to the German Engines?
Interesting video, thank you. Love the picture of the car used to carry visitors to Medlow Bath, the location of the once fabulous Hydro Majestic Hotel, and the Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
Perfect content as always, sir. It clears up my confusion, why "Daimler" (a seemingly German brand) was a producer of British armored vehicle and automobiles.
Nice of you to show the Danish "Crown One", The Queen's vehicle for official affairs, a DS 420, we enjoy seing around town here. When she's on private business, like personal shopping, she uses "Crown 121", which was a Jaguar XJ last time I saw it.
In 1978 my wife and I were in England on holiday and hired an Imp in Liverpool and spent a couple of weeks touring Scotland. I hadn't seen one before and was very impressed with it, a real pleasure to drive. Prior to that we had the use of a mini which compared very poorly to the Imp.
For me growing up I always knew them as posh jags, but later I knew about the Mercedes tie in, but never knew about the Indian connection. Great and informative video.
no Mercedes tie in. Daimler tie in. The Mercedes brand name was created years later by Emil Jellinek, son of a Vienna rabbi, who became Daimler´s (DMG, Daimler Motorengesellschaft) first international salesman. Mercedes was the name of Emil Jellinek´s daughter. Jellinek´s first wife was from a Sephardic (Spanish) Jewish family in Algiers. Hence the Spanish name of their daughter: Mercédès

There was also Austro-Daimler, which started as a sister company of german Daimler in Austria but became independent in 1909. They stopped making cars in the 1930s and went up in the Steyer-Daimler-Puch industrial conglomerate. In the 1970s now Steyer-Puch colaborated with Mercedes Benz to design and manufacture an off-road vehicle, which became the g-class.

There has been a bit of restructuring in what was the Daimler AG. We now have three companies: Mercedes-Benz AG including sub-brands Mercedes-Maybach (luxury), Mercedes-AMG (performance), smart (small cars), Mercedes-EQ (electric cars). Daimler Trucks AG selling trucks and buses under the brands BharatBenz, Freightliner, FUSO, Mercedes-Benz (again), Setra, Thomas Built Buses and Western Star. And Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG specialising on financing, leasing, insurance and fleet management. The escapades of Sir Bernard and Lady Docker at the helm of BSA/Daimler in the 50's are a fascinating tidbit of automotive history. It's been suggested that they were the death of Daimlers for the Royals.
It's really interesting about these other British luxury marques, Such as Lanchester, Armstrong-Siddeley, Alvis, Lagonda, Bristol, and pre Jaguar Daimlers, I also like Austin Sheerlines and Princesses, and how Vanden Plas and Princess changed from marque to model name to trim level or vice versa
There was a 3rd Daimler car brand. Austro-Daimler. It was a hightech company in Austria-Hungary, creating tanks, aero engines, race cars and high end luxury cars. Car production ended in 1934 when the steyr-daimler-puch AG (some sort of austian british leyland) was founded. Some years ago someone bought the name and is now building a super GT with around 1000 hp under the name Austro-Daimler Bergmeister.
Very informative video about the two "Daimlers". But a small correction. While Tata Motors had a long relationship with the Benz company of Germany, Daimler Benz no longer has any share ownership in Tata Motors. While Tata bought JLR, they did have about 5-6% share, because Mercedes Benz car manufacturing in India had partially depended on the Tata Motors manufacturing facilities at one time. In fact Mercedes Benz India started as a JV with Tata Motors, who were then called Telco (short for Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd.). Though over time Tata exited that JV and Daimler took a few shares in Tata Motors. But eventually once the co-operation was no longer required, and Tata effectively became a competitor through JLR, Daimler Benz divested its share of Tata Motors back in 2010.
Thanks for clarifying. I think in the video I mentioned at the time of acquisition they had a part ownership, but as you say it was sold around 2010 I believe.
@@TunedMercedes Well "competitive" is a subjective matter, though I had only mentioned JLR are a competitor. Also, not sure I would call a manufacturer which had sales of over 400 thousand cars a "niche producer". And I think many will argue that the Range Rover series is still the benchmark in the premium SUV space.
@@julupani this is a basic business school example actually. MB sets pretty much the market and then you have competitors to it that compete on power or other areas (bmw) and then niche manufacture that may dominate a segment like luxury off road vehicles, ultra luxury etc. I think range rover if they focuses on reliability it can continue to be a great brand.
Interesting article but your pronunciation of Daimler may well have been correct in Germany but in the UK it's always been pronounced as "Dameler" (still spelt Daimler) we do say rain, not rine don't we??? and The Daimler Motor Company was a British company wasn't it? I have a few Daimler cars, not Dimelers!
Hear hear! Also amuses me that even the tyre company Michelin itself pronounces its name 'mitchellin' in its British advertising - only poncey restaurants pronounce it 'meeshlan'. And then there's Nestles, nobody in the UK used to call it Nestlé!
The really interesting part is that Gottlieb Daimler was born Däumler (pronounced "Doimler"). Nowhere is it mentioned why he changed the spelling of his family name. My best guess is that he wanted to adopt his name to British spelling (as there is no "Umlaut ä" in the English alphabet) when he started selling engines in Britain.

Absolutely fascinating. I never knew the two were related. I always thought the UK company’s name was pronounced Dameler while the German, Dimeler. Incidentally, my P1 teacher, Miss Langmuir, with whom I was in love, had a Dameler, sorry, Dimeler.
Nobody in the UK pronounces it 'Dimeler', at least, I've never heard it said that way. Most German brand name pronunciations get 'Anglicised' in the UK, either because of the spelling or because the German pronunciation is just too, er, German for us to get our tongues around!

The Mercedes name came about in 1900 - Emile Jellinek was a very wealthy individual and was the Consul-General for the Austro-Hungarian empire in Nice, France. He was a supporter of the Daimler company and acted as an unofficial distributor of the cars to his friends. Paul Daimler (Gottleib's son) had designed a new, more radical, car and Jellinek was so impressed, he placed an order for 36 of the new model paying a large amount of money up front. The new car was called the Mercedes after Jellinek's daughter. After that, all the cars were called Mercedes and later Mercedes-Benz, following the merger with the Benz company in the 1920s.
This is brilliant. I have always wondered about this. I remember seeing what I thought were XJ6 Jaguars badged as Daimlers and thinking, 'The're German arnt they?
Thank you very much indeed! While I roughly knew the whole story, I am very grateful for your excellent brief explanation! I am sure most people had no idea! Very well told!
Just one remark: you (Big Car) could have added not a pinch of salt but rather a bit of pepper by paying attention to the different pronounciation between the German and British Daimler companies. Myself being British born but also German language speaker. You only used the German (original) pronounciation.
To be honest I wasn't aware of the British pronunciation. I've been living in the US too long! When I was made aware of it after the Chrysler Crossfire video I thought of changing to say "daymler" for the British one, but the video was already in the can. I agree it would have been better, at least to differentiate both companies audibly.

allways interesting info you upload! if i may suggest another name to explain, as an austrian i'd be happy to hear you talking about MERCEDES! hint: her last name was JELINEK!
Britain was not the only country where Gottlieb Daimler entered a licensing agreement, there was also Austro-Daimler (which gave Ferdinand Porsche his start in the auto industry and which marketed a "Maja" car named after Emil Jellinek's *other* daughter) and, briefly, America (the "American Mercedes" built by the family that owned the Steinway piano company). It showed how little he knew about how the industry and markets would work out that Daimler (the man) gave Simms the license for all the British Empire which left the Steinways with the US only. Even ten years later, Simms would've wound up the licensee for the British Empire excluding Canada and Steinway the one for USA *and* Canada.

I like these shorter, more informal style of videos. A nice change of pace while still being informative
Glad you liked it. I was trying something different.
as a kid i saw Jaguars with a Daimler badge, and i never did understand. But this video clears it all up.
No mention of Daimler buses that were made in the United Kingdom. The last model was the Daimler Fleetline, a double deck bus chassis that was very popular with municipal bus operators until production ended in the early 1980's.
Sorry. Everyone’s being too polite to you here! Nobody in the UK has ever pronounced it Dimeler. It has always been Dame-ler.
well now we know the proper way to say it. you are showing your ignorance.
I left 2 comment and they both disappears. Love your work...
@@robertwestinghouse4098 Odd - I can see both of them.
Brits also don't pronounce the "r" AFAIK.
More like „deimler“ 😉
Interesting video, thank you. Love the picture of the car used to carry visitors to Medlow Bath, the location of the once fabulous Hydro Majestic Hotel, and the Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney.
My 1984 Mercedes had on its data plate 'Manufactured by Daimler-Benz'. Mercedes was simply the name of the daughter of Daimler-Benz's best client.

Interesting!
Your videos are pure joy! I wish Discovery channel had you onboard in it’s heyday. I see great things happening.
Thank you for this! I found the whole naming very confusing after seeing that Jags were also called Daimlers, but Daimler was the parent company of Merc

My fave (beside my own) was the Majestic Major, a large saloon (sedan) introduced in 1960 and often built as a limousine. It was timed by one magazine as reaching 60 mph in 9.1 seconds. That's one really happy chauffeur!
There has been a bit of restructuring in what was the Daimler AG. We now have three companies:
Mercedes-Benz AG including sub-brands Mercedes-Maybach (luxury), Mercedes-AMG (performance), smart (small cars), Mercedes-EQ (electric cars).
Daimler Trucks AG selling trucks and buses under the brands BharatBenz, Freightliner, FUSO, Mercedes-Benz (again), Setra, Thomas Built Buses and Western Star.
And Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG specialising on financing, leasing, insurance and fleet management. (Side note: Siemens Mobility uses the same term but does something completely different: building trains ...)
People will remember that Daimler-Benz, Daimler-Chrysler or just Daimler was the name of the corporation behind all of it but that's not true any more with the recent split up. Now it's a sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz Group ....
Fuso is under daimler now? So they have took over mitsubishi truck?
@@ramadhanisme7 From what I found out, Fuso is 89% owned by Daimler Trucks and 11% by Mitsubishi. They are using the Mitsubishi trademark by a licence agreement.
The escapades of Sir Bernard and Lady Docker at the helm of BSA/Daimler in the 50's are a fascinating tidbit of automotive history. It's been suggested that they were the death of Daimlers for the Royals.
Holy cow just noticed the logo. That's brilliant.
I have one of the last Daimler Super Eights, built in late 2008. Never seen another!

I think in the video I mentioned at the time of acquisition they had a part ownership, but as you say it was sold around 2010 I believe.
i mean im not sure id say they are competitive. one is a market leader and the other one is a niche producer
Thanks for explaining! I always wanted to know this but I also always forgot to read something about it. So, thanks again. 👍
Thank you for saying this - I didn't because of perhaps offence to what is a rather good channel.

Gottlieb Daimler was an anglophile and in the early 1930s the German motorcycle company NSU built successful racing bikes constructed my Englishman Walter William Moore and ridden by Tom Bullus of Bradford. How good the 1940s could have been if engineers had shaped the future.

I remember seeing a Daimler version of an early 60's Jaguar Mk. II when I was a kid. It was imported to the States by serviceman and was very luxurious.
That was the Daimler 250 made from 1962-69. It had the same body as a Jaguar MKII but with a 2.5 litre V8 engine.

Many years ago when cars were registered local the Queen's cars were registered in Kingston upon Hull. It has been a while since I came across this but I believe HRH may have been one of the registration alphabetical groups.
I was aware of Daimler (the engineer), but not of the strange, bifurcated nature and even the existence of the UK Daimler. Fascinating.
Hm, yes. We (GB) pronounced Daimler differently too. Big Car could have added not a pinch of salt but pepper to this doc by paying a little attention to the difference...
I do like the 90's Daimlers, I know they are really just posher Jags but they are that little bit more special. I can't see JLR bringing it back now though, especially since they dropped the new XJ.

As someone from India and as someone who saw it first hand (in the 1990s) of how the Tata's never really took pride in.. nor really marketed the Mercedes CKDs they assembled....
..i simply feel sorry for the Jaguar brand now.
Thank you for that Stephen; too many today neither know nor care about such fascinating details which bring little footnotes in history alive...
This is brilliant. I have always wondered about this. I remember seeing what I thought were XJ6 Jaguars badged as Daimlers and thinking, 'The're German arnt they?
Thanks for making this video. I have always wondered why/how two Daimlers existed, and if there was any connection between the two.
