Diff bearing on input shaft is most likely but could be output bearings on either side, is my best guess Good luck, best wishes and well done for not falling apart with the stress!
I feel your stress, we were in a similar situation returning from Cape York. Then our GU went into limp mode. Limped into Cairns and they seemed to sort it as a bad sensor. Then the car went into limp mode again about 100kms from Mackay. It was the start of a long weekend so was a nervous wait. Good to see you kept level headed and didn’t panic
Well done guys, Yep, the old big screwdriver is the Fitters Stethoscope. At least you could whip the axles out and tailshaft and drive in Front wheel drive. Benefit of a 70 series floating axles.
Sounds like you're near Milly Milly Station. I used to work there as a kid. Would be great if you could pop in there. I've always wanted to go back. Good luck with the car.
TIAV had a similar issue with their diff and had to get it replaced in Derbyshire from memory. It was also a McCormack diff.

Nearly said "What could go wrong", but caught himself 😂
Sounds like 'FUN' - Great Vid
Another great episode. Hope you manage to get the issue sorted with the vehicle without any further stress.
