I absolutley went to kick myself in the head today not getting video as I was here and this entire training center property is abandoned and weeds are just taking over the main building. Yet there were radiation detection air machines still running there. I will be going back.
Well I mean half the plant isn’t even able to produce power and I’m sure it better now but after 1979 I’m sure it wasn’t the greatest place to work at that time, but I’m not surprised they kept this unit operating, might as well while it’s good
Achim Samir Mihail they said operating costs were too expensive. They asked the state for assistance as other states have helped their nuclear industries, but the heavy lobbying of gas and coal power providers, who claimed this was just a bail out and there was still no safe disposal for nuclear waste, won over the politicians.
Unit 2 did 28th March 1979 due to a stuck pilot pressure relief valve which caused a partial meltdown damaging the reactor. TMI 1 was unaffected and still continues to operate although I think TMI 1 is in the process of being decommissioned.
Chernobyl Unit 4 had its meltdown in 1986. Its last reactor (Unit 3) shut down in 2000. Nuclear power plants are extremely resilient, and much of the time even a severe incident in one reactor won't permanently halt operations in others.

Wow... vintage equipment... No modern TDC/SCADA/DCS systems... Why not use a modern dcs system like Honeywell Experion, or Emerson DeltaV? Why stick to the analogue meter systems??? Ps i am an E/I technician at a oil refinery in europe
I wouldn't say it's because "half the plant is shut down." Unit 1 and Unit 2 are independent power plants located at the same site (Three Mile Island). Unit 1 is still in operation, and Unit 2 suffered the partial core meltdown in 1979. In all honesty, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." There have surely been upgrades, but the indication is sufficient for all the reactor systems that were built in the 70s. The plant is only licensed to operate into 2034 (although if the energy market has anything to say about it, it could be offline as early as 2019). It will then be decommissioned. There just isn't really a way to justify a control system overhaul that would take the plant offline for a rather long time, given the above situation.

Worked at TMI 2 starting in 1978. Worked the restart of TMI 1 in the mid 1980. Sorry to see much a reliable unit shut down forever.
I spent 15 years in a Control Room as an operator. Interesting yes but also long stretches of serious boredom
golfer59 the boredom do affect me too. Very bored, an operator is a loner ranger
How did you become a operator?
Did you atleast get to be on your phone?
can you email me i am interested in this job fieldi want to know more i am just waiting to get out the Marines. Brentwilso285@gmail.com
just lower the coolant for the reactor and it'll get fun
Wow! Thank you so much for this!
Keep up the good work, TMI operators!

Perfect idea. Like that they made it on an actual island. (I assume it is 3 miles long) Looks like a nice place to work.
too bad its being decommissioned

So sad it’s being shutdown forever in a few weeks
Huh?!
Achim Samir Mihail Three Mile Island has been permanently shutdown. It is being de-fueled and decommissioned.
Now that sucks...
But why tho?

I thought that three-mile had a meltdown
reactor 2 did, reactor 1 survived.
That wasn't as big as needed to shut it down
