Six directors tackle the idea (or is it a myth?) of controlling a film set

  • If directing a film had a theme song, it would likely be Janet Jackson's "Control." Or maybe Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure." In short, it's a tough gig. These six directors know that control on a film set is a matter of balance -- between getting the job done and allowing a creative flow: David Fincher ("Mank"); Paul Greengrass ("News of the World"); Regina King ("One Night in Miami"); Spike Lee ("Da 5 Bloods"); Aaron Sorkin ("The Trial of the Chicago Seven") and Chloe Zhao ("Nomadland"). Control is an illusion, contends Fincher. “The greatest fallacy of our profession.” The directors gathered virtually for The Envelope's annual Oscar Roundtable.

    The moderation for this panel was terrific. He managed to keep everyone involved and chained together conversations really well. Awesome.

    Weird to see Fincher and Sorkin talking about films they haven't made together!
    Thank you for this.

      I feel like Sorkin is kinda anxious during the interview because the director he admire is sitting right next to him for the same award and LOVE IT

      The DGA podcast has them interviewing each other about their two movies. One episode for each movie.

      @@jos3goodkid I had a similar thought because of his constant pausing between words and the wild gazes around the room as he spoke, as it felt unlike him in constrast with interviews I've seen of him before. But later on he spoke in a much more natural way. I think it's because the question posed at around 25:50 may not be something that he had clear thoughts on from the get go, and that he had to think carefully before wording himself. Whereas in later clips he speaks of things that he may have thought about on a constant basis, and he words everything easily because of it.

    Why is Regina acting like she’s never directed before? One Night in Miami is her first major motion picture, but she has a number of directing credits under her belt.

    • @neroDMC14
      @neroDMC14 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's her narrative feature directorial debut. I get your point, but there is a substantial difference between directing Southland or Scandal and owning a film set as a director. I think she's just being mindful of that. Also, considering the caliber of talent around her, it's an opportunity to recognize their legacies in the space as well.

    • @Rockscissorspaper
      @Rockscissorspaper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She's NOT acting lie she's never directed before. The moderator even said she's directed television before. But this was her first film.
