    That is just extraordinary. Both from the setter and from the solver (Well done, Mark!!). But especially the setter. I mean, I can't even begin.... That dial mechanism!!!😱😱😱
    How do even go about constructing this??? Amazing.

  • @kea2878

    For 30 across, the definition is "American leverage drives one", as a handcar is one of those railway platforms propelled by working a seesaw lever. The wordplay is AR (Arab) after H AND C (sign of available water, as in a hotel).

    • @kea2878
      @kea2878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      And for 14 down, TWILT is a dialect form of "quilt", and one of the meanings of "puff" is a quilted bedcover.

    Once this is done from the "right point", I think this is instructing us to replace from the right side, clever

    What an unbelievably complex crossword puzzle! Hats off to the compiler Kea, and hats off to you Mark for being able to decipher its mysteries! Just one thing, that shifting letters thing is actually also a rotation. That's why the cipher that shifts the alphabet 13 places is called ROT13, for instance. I would have tried that before actually replacing the letters, but that would have been wrong.

    I can only imagine that the setter is really an AI. The thought of creating something like this with its twists and turns is just mind blowing.

    Mindblowing
    I can't even begin to think about the levels of genius it would take to create a puzzle like this. Absolutely phenomenal.

    As Mark said, astonishing. Worth every second of the long version. The mind boggles at how much time Kea must have spent putting this together. Wow.

    How do you compile such a crossword? The missing letters act on the ring and spell out the words of the final clue! Then execute it to see kea's finger prints on the crime scene! Chief inspector Mark solved it without any reference! Holmes and Moriarity!

      Check out the US version. Same principle, but they use very very few obscure words like UK ones. Also, every word in a clue makes sense and have much more rigorous rules, thereby making them way fairer to solvers. Still very very hard, but less obscure and tedious.

    Probably the longest youtube video i've watched - a thing of beauty indeed. I was amazed that nary a reference was consulted -- I'm constantly looking things up in Chambers or wikipedia.

    As someone whose first language is not English I watch and don't have any idea what's going on. I feel like a complete blank page: how does he know how many letters he has to use for a certain sub-clue. Watching a strange new world

    Despite my love of all cryptic crosswords (e.g. Times, Guardian, Telegraph), by far the biggest reason that I've always avoided the one in The Listener is that I could never make head nor tail of the preamble 🤣🤣🤣
    Maybe, finally, I will at least get to understand one!.....maybe 😜

    Oh my days. That is astonishing. Chapeau to Kea and my thanks to Mark for highlighting a bit of beautiful Listener history. That was the crossword compiler’s equivalent to Ben Stokes yesterday. Unsurpassable.

    I just can't understand how people could ever construct something like this. Is there a computer involved to find what words fit the gaps, or is it all from memory? Unbelievable.

    • @kea2878
      @kea2878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I did use software to find words that fitted - TWILT and CHOLELITHIASIS aren't part of my everyday conversation. But I spent months getting the grid to work, trying different placements of the hidden words and the final 12 Ds.

      @@kea2878 Was there any particular reason for the clues being alphabetically ordered within each rotation?

    • @kea2878
      @kea2878 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      No, it was just for my own amusement, and as a sort of penance for not being able to have the clues in the conventional order and still spell out the combination.

      I'm pretty sure you were supposed to figure those out as a way to "guess and check" your crossword. If the letters didn't match then your original answer is wrong. It's a smart way to make the puzzle easier after they spent a good time on the original crossword.

    So has anyone figured out the HANDCAR clue? It's driving me nuts!

    • @CrackingTheCryptic
      @CrackingTheCryptic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I can parse it I think: The definition is "American leverage drives one" because a HANDCAR is an American object driven by pressure on the lever. Arab can be abbreviated to AR and this goes after "H AND C" (as in "HOT AND COLD") being a "sign of available water"! Simon
