A liiiittle correction would be: they don’t correspond uniquely; the author just used stereo channels (mapped to X and Y coordinates) in such a precise way that it looks that way. I don’t mean you can visualize everything as zooming fractal spirals, of course, and also that should’ve been pretty hard to achieve because you need to think _both_ in terms of (X, Y) graphing _and_ for the sound to be nice and musical. Not every Shepard tone sample would be able to be massaged into neat fractal spirals, nor every spirals like those would be sound musically useful in this context, so he needed to think both together in some way, even if working on the idea was iterative (as it usually is) and simpler to do. So in the end his achievement is even more than just plugging in a Shepard tone _or_ a fractal spiral.
