The game can be pretty finicky on certain devices. I have an iPhone 11 so mine is fine most of the time, but my old phone ran the game relatively poorly. On my old phone to reduce the lag as much as possible I refreshed the game semi-frequently and closed background apps. If that didn't do it I would reinstall the game to offload it.
