I think a good example of a poorly designed antagonist is Galbatorix from the Inheritance cycle/Eragon series. All the strengths, no weaknesses and a BS ending for the ages because Chris did not leave any way for the hero to actually defeat him. He had to break his own defined rules to even make it happen and then it defied everything we had been told about the antagonist. It really ruined the ending of the series, also made almost the entire fourth book pointless because none of it came into play in the end. A master class in "how not to craft a villain."

Would you consider making character analysis videos pertaining to the writing/character concepts you talk about?

Oh you mean looking at specific characters to analyze how they implement core writing concepts (or dont). Thats a great idea! It really helps to see specific examples. Do you have a request for a character or two you’d like to see a video on?

@@justinfikestorycastle As I'm more into games than books (stories all the same, though, right), I was thinking Handsome Jack from the Borderlands games, specifically 2 and The Pre-Sequel. Being games - and quite lengthy ones at that, even for the main story, I know they definitely require more time than a movie or TV series, and you're probably busy enough as is. You could maybe find some montage of his overall presence across the games on TH-cam, but nothing's like experiencing him through the story proper. I WOULD suggest starting with Borderlands 2, though Pre-Sequel shows his origin. There's something to going back in time to reveal his story, though, at least for me, so probably start with 2.

@@TheREALSimagination Actually yes I've played all the borderlands games (multiple times, actually lol they're great) and yes Handsome Jack is a GREAT character! Very good example of a hero>antihero>villain arc, which you don't see all that often. I'd love to do a breakdown of his character someday.

@@justinfikestorycastle I WISH we had antagonist characters like Jack. His infamous pretzel line when you exit Liar's Berg - as well as the pretzels and rattling of the bag - were real, as the actor cut hisown line off to remark in real time how "these pretzels suck", and the guy revealing this in an interview "hate him for that". That fun fact is probably my favorite single part of the series.

The thumbnail is stupid because both villain are good. You really expect me to watch this? Just opened the video to dislike it.
