You know what I actually find interesting (and heartbreaking) about the whole Venom Snake reveal? It potentially recontextualizes Big Boss' entire relationship with Solid Snake. Venom probably heavily resents Big Boss for essentially erasing Venom's former identity and using him as a fall guy while he goes off to do his own shit, so he'd probably do whatever he could to undermine BB without directly betraying him. That's why Big Boss comes across like a Bond villain in Metal Gear 1 but is closer to the war-ravaged idealogue we normally consider him as in Metal Gear 2; not just because they're different people, but because Venom used his resemblance to Big Boss to play the guy up as more heartless, evil and insane than he really was, deliberately to turn Snake against him. Maybe Big Boss was planning on inducting Snake into Outer Heaven's ranks at some point since he says himself that he always respected Snake as a soldier and a man, but Venom's desire for revenge deliberately drove them apart.
@@jefferyharambe5067 No Meryl does say that in the first game. And for those who played Smash Bros Ultimate, they referenced Paz's death in the worst way lmao.
While I know many fans do not like the ending and the twist, I feel it's perfect for the main theme of the game. Literal phantom pain refers to the sensation an individual feels in a body part they no longer have. The title Phantom Pain is supposed to evoke feelings of loss and the pain of knowing everything Snake and his allies have lost. Snake loses his men, his arm, his sense of color at certain point. Miller too loses his men, his arm, and his leg. Both lose their chance at revenge when Huey kills Skullface. Snake must kill his infected men. Quiet leaves. Huey is revealed to be a monster and outcasted from the base. Eli steals the Metal Gear and is never resolved. Hell, Zero is proven to not be the horrible person Big Boss thought he was in MGS 4, which makes his killing of the man all the more tragic. But the biggest tragedy in the game is Snake himself. Many feel the reveal is supposed to be some fourth wall breaking congratulations for the player. You finally get to be Big Boss! You're his legacy! But if anything that's what Big Boss wanted Venom Snake to believe. The truth is that Venom Snake has lost the worst thing anyone can lose; his sense of identity. Venom's old self will be completely forgotten by history. It's almost a perfect analogy to The Boss. The USA sacrificed The Boss for their own good; Big Boss sacrifices Venom, his best man. Venom's old self is discarded and he is forced to play a role he never asked for. Until his eventual death by Solid Snake, Venom had to deal with the pain of not only losing his old self, but the realization he is not Big Boss.

Phantom Pain’s main story somewhat confuses me with its fanservice. On the one hand, it brings back elements most Metal Gear didn’t ask for, like Volgin as the Man on Fire or kid Liquid Snake and Psycho Mantis. However, things that are both important and that fans would like to see like Zero’s regret for his actions and remorse for Big Boss, are left to optional tape recordings. At least with MGS4’s fanservice, it pulled out all the stops.
14:25 - I don't know if anyone else has answered you on this, but I just 100%ed the game myself last night. 240 hours, 40 minutes is what the game log told me. A good third of that was spent on mission retries, FOB missions, or me just bumping around the hub worlds to find random pickups. Even with 100%, though, there's STILL more game. I still have about 4 dozen challenge tasks remaining, I have three FOB sites that are not fully built, there are the FOB missions themselves, I have only researched and developed about 65% of the equipment, and I haven't even touched Metal Gear Online (which IS still running). So, yeah, there is an ass load of content for this game. And new stuff is still being added to this day.
Big Boss: "Hey, so you went through hell and back pointlessly without realizing it, so now you're really Big Boss. Yeah, there are two of us. Hopefully this will come in handy in case somebody tries to kill me ten years later."
But, why would anyone want the world's greatest, most badass soldier dead? Having a body double? Big Boss and Solid Snake are both way too badass to have to need body doubles!
Well, it was an interesting marathon. Being one of the people who voted for the Mother series, I was slightly agitated to have to sit through ALL of these games, but I'm glad I did. It was actually a fun ride, and I now know WAY more about the MGS franchise than ever before. That being said, I'm extremely excited about the Mother seriex marathon, and can't wait for the next review.
I theorize Venom Snake is the Big Boss of the MSX games, and the Big Boss who Snake meets in MSG4 is the actual Big Boss. I would think the mind screw of what happened to Venom Snake would cause him to go crazy and become the monster Solid Snake fought in Metal Gear MSX
My own theory as to why chapter 3 was scrapped was not only due to the Kojima/ Konami debacle but a story reason. Think of it this way, after we learn that Venom Snake isn't Big Boss the game ends, the rug is pulled from under our feet etc. Knowing that fact and letting the story continue, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the ending? We continue our adventures as this medic, who isn't the Big Boss we know and love from previous games. I don't know, food for thought.
+Captainjjb84 That makes a lot of sense but I think the real reason is a lot stupider. On top of the money issues maybe the big reveal was suppose to happen after chapter 3 and chapter 2 was meant to end either after Quiet's death or after Snake makes the diamonds from the ashes. Finding out Venom Snakes identity halfway through the game is very weird for pacing.

Thank you, sir. I pretty much grew up on this series and the last one made me feel torn. Not only was it the end of a franchise for me, it also felt cheap and confused. after weeks of no sleep i came to the conclusion that maybe this was kojima's way if saying that "US" fans were the reason this legend lives and will live on. That "we" created snake by supporting him and his vision. I dont know what I'm saying lol but thanks anyways for your marathon, I'm glad to see one more person to play thru the games just like i have. Here's to you, Johnny!!

And yeah trust me man I watched all your Marathon videos on this series and you did a fantastic job man.:) The games I have played in this series ended up making me a fan of it.(Those being Metal Gear,Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2,Metal Gear Rising and lastly Metal Gear Solid 3.)

I'm personally happy that you did do this marathon, because it gave me a chance to try the games myself. I now own the first two mgs games and looking to getting the other when I get the chance. Thanks Johnny.
While I voted for Mother, this marathon really made me want to give MGS a shot. I got MGS4 with my PS3 a few years back but couldn't get more than 15 minutes into it. Now I've got the HD Collection waiting for me and I'm getting MGS1 on PSN...
NintyFan290 The proof I have is They are both amazing rpgs In mother 3 just like undertale you can spare the monsters They have been compared a crap ton on the internet They both have amazing stories and characters That is all the connections I have. The only real reason I said it is because it is what I hope it is and I just thought of conections
+Cheysin41 you can't spare people in mother 3. you can run but ultimately you'll get the crap beat out of you by the bosses or really tough enemies (master eddie, robotic attack roach etc..), unless you get really lucky with pk flash or the new years bomb however the earliest you have access to one of the 2 is the end of chapter 5

Metal Gear has come to a close. This marathon was the final push I needed to try the series out and I'm so glad I did now. Thank you Johnny.
So about Metal Gear Survive....
*brick't*
"Earthbound Beginings, Earthbound, Mother 3, and a Special 4th Gam- UNDERTALE."
Honestly man this was a great Marathon you did.:) Recently I have been getting into the series due to curiosity and from what I played I ended up loving MGS a lot.
Thank you for reviewing these games! Have fun with the Mother series.
"Here we are: The last 2. The duology that makes up Metal Gear Solid V." More like a trilogy without a 3rd part & part of 2...
“Most brutal mgs game yet” is one where you can knock people out by riding a box down a hill
For once someone actually talks about the gameplay improvements instead of bitching about the lack of bosses.
It may have been a long ride but It was definately a fun ride. Thank's SomeCallMeJohnny. :)
I can't wait to see your Mother marathon and especially your Star Fox marathon. I've heard a lot of good things about the Mother series and I'm nuts over Star Fox games.
Thats likely because you were still in the first cutscene
"NOW GIVE ME A HUG!"
I laughed at that part. xD
***** The "Give me a hug" part was the best imo
We move from the metaphorical Mother of all Marathons, to the LITERAL Mother of all marathons.
Damn, you really outdid yourself with the pacing and editing of this video. Good job Johnny.
congratulations and great job for completing this Johnny.
You are wrong about being forced to do the repeat missions to progress the story. You can just completely ignore them.
The special review after mother 3 is undertale
Well, duh.
NintyFan290 The proof I have is
They are both amazing rpgs
In mother 3 just like undertale you can spare the monsters
They have been compared a crap ton on the internet
They both have amazing stories and characters
That is all the connections I have. The only real reason I said it is because it is what I hope it is and I just thought of conections
+Cheysin41 and don't forget that the game was inspired by earthbound and the creator made a earthbound Halloween hack before undertale.
He's also said on numerous occasions (in livestreams and the like) that the special review is Undertale. I don't know why he didn't just say it here.
That goddamn rocket fist bit never fails to make me laugh. Good old slapstick goodness.
That was an epic review. Even though I've never played any metal gear game and I really had a hard time trying to understand all this complicated plot across those games, I had a great time with the review of this series. Great jog Jhonny! now you deserve some rest, like, a rest of 4 months or something like that.
Honestly, I wasn't excited for the Metal Gear marathon, but after watching your reviews on the series, I got interested and started playing myself. Good job on the marathon and good luck on EarthBound
The Fake Boss twist was the final nail in MGS5s story
i think the reason he was a fake snake was so it could solve the MG1 big boss problem.
Jerec 12 There never was any problem or plot hole. It was clearly said from the beginning that Big Boss simply survived the MG1 incident.
to get about 90% cost me 303 hours according to steam.
Also, who else thinks the "Bonus" review is _Undertale_?
Watching this series of videos in 2019! You’ve done a great job with the MGS series of videos. Just a shame it ends on phantom pain. But still you’ve done a stellar job 👌🏽
Thank you for opening my eyes and bringing attention to this series. Just started playing it and am enjoying it
This was my first Metal Gear and I loved it. I started playing MGS1 and it's great. I just got to Disc 2.
Snake: LIQUIIIIIID!!!
Skullface: WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO?!!!
I know some fans hated MGSV, but I really liked it, and for me, it's even better than MGS4
They're both on par for me; weakest in the whole series. Still good games though.
Yea gameplay is great. I think a lot of people really don't like is because of the story
I enjoyed the gameplay, really I could play the game for hours on end, but the story wasn't the greatest.
John Moon Not to mention having awesome bosses sorry but that was a big deal for me with the MGS series.
Generally if you're a long time fan of the franchise, even if you started with MGS 1, the phantom pain is just pointless trash.
I've waited so long for u to review the mother series holy shit I'm crying
I never had an interest in this series, but I'm still glad that you did this marathon and educated me on an entire game series I previously knew nothing about
YES!! This made my shitty day a whole lot better, thank you, Johnny!
Now to get back with his Co-Host Nathan and finish up that EarthBound live stream.
Ground Zeroes, also known as Metal Gear "I can't believe we did this shit and our reputation is still" Solid.
+Nixitur konami has a reputation?
i thought they fucked it as hard as the 'fans' fucked them
Imo Ground Zeroes is much more fun to come back to than PP, so I guess they did the right call
Thanks for the marathon Johnny! Back around the start of the marathon, I spotted a copy of MGS2 at a goodwill and decided to pick it up. I loved it and got MGS3 off eBay shortly after. If I get a system newer than the PS2, I look forward to continuing the series!
What an excellent birthday present!
Good job on the MGS Marathon!
