Even if you don't take the resources from the tree with you, you should still harvest them and just leave them there. That way, you'll have more for the next trip.
It's also a good idea to dig diagonally to get a more direct path to the tree.

I saw someone say, once the tree is full grown, iron grows in 1 day, water 2 days, and cobalt 3 days

I like the double cobalt tree for prestige mode. Yes, you can do two cobalt.

Thank you, two myths busted here.
1) Roots can grow up, at least 4 squares up and at least 6 blocks from the seed.
2) Your own bombs do not blow up the roots.

edit: i believe the sweet spot for max carry is 27 resources
