I've really enjoyed talking to people about this film (even though I haven't seen it yet). 😅I can't get to the cinema, so will see it when it streams/is available to rent. As you know, it's one of my absolute favourite books and it does seem like the film has perhaps lost the main message, especially with the lack of framing, and has also reshaped the way the narrative examines body/disfigurement, which is a weird choice. As you say, visual forms need different interpretations/highlights, so some of the changes are completely understandable, but it would also be fun to watch something that was more tightly married to the text. Ah well! Thanks for this video, and I'm really looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Under the Skin. I love both the book and the film, for entirely different reasons, and think it's a great example of what a not-so-tight adaptation can do, veering off in different directions while still maintaining the spirit of the original xx

I'll be so interested in your thoughts when you do watch it. I felt like I was being a bit of a downer 😅 On reflection I wonder if the way we do these videos, reading the book so close to watching the adaptation, is always going to work slightly against the adaptation. I wonder if I would have liked the film more if I'd been able to have some distance from the book.. but then again even I'm unlikely to forget the framing so probably not 😅

What you said about the structure is really interesting. When you were talking about how the director was going to do it I immediately thought of Wes Anderson. He does nested narratives so well, when I saw The Grand Budapest Hotel I thought "oh wow, this is like reading one of Stefan Zweig's stories within a story" and then I found out it was inspired by his stories. Thanks for making me want to see and read Poor Things! I think I'll watch it first!

Oh I didn't think of that but you're so right about Wes! I love his films, the new Dahl collection on Netflix also do the nested narrative really well (thank you for reminding me that this piece of terminology exists 😅) Let me know your thoughts when you do!

I so agree w u talking about how difficult it would be to adapt the book but also the missed opportunity of the film in totally loosing the framing narrative! :( I actually also made a video comparing the book to the film in my channel haha but it’s like 30 minutes lol … I just feel like the book is about men’s fantasies of women being ridiculous & then the film was like the man’s fantasy of a woman is real tho actually …. and that’s so sexy lol

Oh hi! I'll have to check your video out! I agree, I think it missed a lot of the nuanced commentary by essentially having one version of events. Maybe I'll watch it again in a year or so when I've had a bit more distance and some lowered expectations, then I might enjoy it more!
