      The quest he complains about wasn’t unrelated though - you’re trying to both protect the secrecy of the hidden path by secretly shepherding the religious zealots out of that location before the empire finds them and getting some ancient knowledge to help unlock tanalor.

    There's probably a discussion to be had about whether optional busywork like cosmictic upgrades for your home base is a negative or positive. As its optional you could argue it doesn't detract from anything but gives obsessives something to do, but then again when it spatters the world map with meaningless icons it does tend to annoy.

      @Sadarak1980 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @Zach Gates that's actually a fair point. Budget and resources are complicated in how they effect a project but the fact is someone spending all their time designing painting number 22 that you can hang on your wall could have been coming up with a new enemy design or almost anything else more useful. I would take a single good side-quest over a 25 collectable objects grind anyway, though I'm aware some people prefer the latter.

      Personally, I like the way Hades handles this. You can buy various cosmetic upgrades for the house (most of which are relatively cheap) as well as a much smaller (and more expensive) set of actually useful upgrades. But after you buy the first thirty upgrades (of either type), it rewards you with a fair amount of high-level in-game currency (enough to buy multiple useful upgrades). So there is at least *some* incentive to redecorate the lounge or whatever, but at the same time, you can instead choose to save up for something good.
      Also, every time you buy any upgrade at all, it pisses off the title character and he berates you, which makes it feel much more satisfying.

    Combat shines in one-on-one fights, otherwise it's a hectic mess of badly-telegraphed unblockables and spamming mindcontrol.
    In short, I'd like to see the third installment tighten up mass combat but otherwise continue on this trajectory.

    • @skeletor8951

      Yeah the simple fact that after you parry you can be knocked out of your followup by other enemies makes fighting in a group without spamming AoE moves from the Dual Blade such a massive pain. Outside the Oggdo/Spawn Force Tea the hardest fight in the game for me was the Force Tear at the start of Jedha where you just fight a bunch of melee dudes with 2 Super Battle Droids taking potshots. Shit was so frustrating because you barely had time to do anything.

      It's a pointless side plot because it has no impact on the story.
      Cal retrieves them and gives them to Cere. They're never brought up again until the attack, she retrieves them again and gives them to BD before she confronts the boss.
      They could've cut to black or shown Cal head off to sleep while 'the Nerd friend' looked over the compass and it would have made no difference on the overall story.

      @darrenb209- ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@southparkkenny2 That is what most players old enough to play games like this call a "series plot hook" or a "tie in"
      Not every plot element needs to be relevant in the same game. It's blatantly clear they want to go for a third game.
      It's like Empire Strikes Back. Han is captured at the end and handed over to Jabba.
      It's immediately resolved at the start of the next movie because it's story related side content.
      The payoff is not in the same movie, you could remove those scenes from Empire Strikes Back and it would not affect the overall plot of that movie. But it would affect the series.
      You can argue it's done much worse than ESB handled it and that would be fair but the idea that every plot hook needs to be resolved in the same story is the kind of absurdity that destroyed the Sequel Trilogy, making each movie practically self-contained.
      What makes a game a setting rather than a linear narrative is having plotlines both main and side running between games.

      "but the idea that every plot hook needs to be resolved in the same story"
      *That's the issue.* It's brought up and resolved instantly for no reason or consequence at all. If it was a sequel hook, it would have some greater impact or be more prominent like the Empire being shown to have obtained copies, not used as a time waste non sequitur.
      If you took the time to read what I actually said instead of trying to be smug and condescending about being "old enough to play games like this" you might have realized that.

    • @darrenb209-
      @darrenb209- ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southparkkenny2 Except you're rather blatantly missing the point.
      It *is* a sequel hook. Things don't need to end badly for it to be one.
      The codes exist and are in your hands, so in the potential third game you will have ties to the hidden path by virtue of having the codes.
      If the codes were not preserved then you would not have the codes and thus a hidden path plotline would be a lot more difficult to arrange. If they were captured by the Empire it would lock them into one specific path for dealing with it.
      Again, a plotline does not need to be resolved in a single game. You are the one *assuming* that the plotline is wrapped up instead of merely being one step on a larger plotline.
      The hook is only resolved if you *assume* that was the end of it, instead of merely being the end of the part of it in this part of the series.
      The Hidden Path's Headquarters have still fallen, it's leaders, or at least major people organising it are dead.
      But you have the codes, so it's not over. It's blatantly a continuing plot hook.

      Nah in the later half of the game they throw massive groups of enemies at you all at once. @@BoloJolo Wow, I'm transported right back to the days of people arguing about Dark Souls 2 (I mean, I recall that being a lot less civilised but then ol' Yahzt has managed to cultivate himself a bafflingly civilised audience given how crass and mean-spirited his performative persona usually is. Mind you, I'm hear and I'd like to think I'm at least somewhat civilised so I don't know why I'm surprised).
      So, credit to Respawn/EA, I guess. On this one point, they successfully made a Star Wars Soulslike. It's just, unfortunately, like the Souls game everyone yelled about.
      EDIT: Silliness aside, and also having not played the game, I completely agree with your in-principal point - the situational awareness necessary not to end up in these situations in the first place _may_ be a skill being tested, and it can be its own kind of fun even if it slows your progress down considerably, but poor level design _may_ also make it virtually impossible to avoid regardless of skill. Obviously can't comment on which it is in this case, but it is a point worth making and expanding upon.

    • @starlitstreet
      @starlitstreet ปีที่แล้ว

      @Eli the main thing I had in mind when writing this is the side room after you climb through the cannon on the moon. I feel like that just threw a million enemies at you at once, and no matter what I did, I wasn't able to kill off the blaster enemies first, and any time I tried to fight the melee enemies first I'd just get shot to death.

    Both this game and its predecessor seem to display what happens when a game's development leads are all highly competent, but also entirely dispassionate about a project. From visuals to mechanics to narrative, everything is exactly good enough to meet a professional's standards, but nothing more.
    After all the controversies the Star Wars IP has seen since its acquisition, and since part of that was directly caused by EA's greed, I wouldn't be surprised if Disney basically sat them down and said "play it safe or The Mouse takes your knees."

    A haphazard mix of melee and ranged enemies spawning in all at once? So it's literally very Souls like. I get why this is a sticking point for so many people, I really do. I loved Dark Forces and a good few of the sequel books until I fell into my Discworld hole for years but I'm genuinely not sure what else Disney were supposed to do. Even if they were minded to follow the sequels, all the actors were about 50 years too old, and if they wanted to carry on _after_ them, Episode VIII's opening crawl would have been about two days long.
      Now, you could certainly make the argument that they could have removed _only_ the mainline sequel stuff from the canon but that would still mean that, if they wanted to use characters from non-mainline stuff, they'd be relying on newer fans hunting out and reading a bunch of books and playing a bunch of games that would be very hard get running these days to be up to speed with who they are. If you're _not_ going to use them, or if you're going to introduce them in a way that means you _don't_ need knowledge of the old EU material, then canonicity is pretty much a non-issue.
      Ultimately, that's all canon means: "what media is potentially relevant to the next thing I'm going to watch/read/play?" If you don't intend for your audience to need to know it, it doesn't need to be canon and, critically, that does _absolutely_ nothing to diminish its value or importance as storytelling, which is ultimately what matters. They're just their own stories now. The Dark Knight Returns was never canon to DC and it's possibly the most beloved Batman comic ever. Same with Kingdom Come for the Justice League. KOTOR could never have been canon because the details of how it plays out differ from playthrough to playthrough. It's fine for great stories to stand on their own.
      I'm with the other commenter - as galling as it is, start with a clean slate and reintroduce the best stuff, in your own time, so that the vast majority of your audience don't need to do an Ironman catch-up session to know everything they should know. Thrawn's canon again and Kyle is every bit as iconic so it should be grand.
      Sorry, comment kind of got away from me. Bad habit, I know.

    • @lukeskywalker987
      @lukeskywalker987 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Pineappolis The issue is that they didn't need to declare the Expanded Universe non-canon. The Expanded Universe itself doesn't really care about canon; there are at least three completely separate stories that focus on Luke post-RotJ. The Star Wars Expanded Universe was more of a platform for writers to tell their own stories. Disney could have literally said nothing and just release the sequel trilogy and most people would've just thought of it as a Retcon.

    Will you ever do a "legacy of kain" series retrospective? For Yahtzee not the escapist channel.

      Might not be your speed as he's got a very unorthodox comedic style but, if anyone's going to do one in this strata of TH-camrs, it'll probably be Hbomberguy. He (rather covertly) referred to it as one of the most important and meaningful stories in gaming history in one of his other videos.
      Also, it'll probably be about 4 hours long. Your mileage may very on whether that's a bug or a feature.
