When I hiked in Borneo, all the local guides used umbrellas instead of rain jackets, to keep the rain off but still be comfortable in the humidity.

I can give a quick tip....I take care of my gear, but I always forget to dry out the umbrella....over the years I've had to replace them because of that. (I'm still forgetting to dry it out lol) so remember to open it up and dry it out after a trip!

😄 What a coincidence, Taylor! I just ordered the Lighttrek this morning. It’ll arrive tomorrow. I gotta support my Texas company!

I picked up the SMD Silvershadow this year. I'm still going to carry a rain jacket for use at camp but while hiking I'm using the umbrella.

The lighttrek looks similar to the Silver Shadow Carbon by Six Moons, except the carbon has the bigger handle. I've been rocking that one for a few years now and love it.
Six Moons has the lightest on the market with the Rainwalker SUL at 5.5 oz, but it doesnt have the silver lining.
Well done on the comparison Taylor!

Thanks man! I tried to pick two that were relatively similar in price and weight.

The idea of using a cheaper umbrella is nice. I tried that with a compact umbrella I had bought at Walmart. It was fine until the temps went into the upper 80s and 90s. At that point, it seemed almost as if it was keeping the heated air trapped above me. Regardless of how fast or slow I was hiking, not using the cheap umbrella was much more comfortable at that point. I tried again with a cheap reflective umbrella from Amazon and it worked so much better. If the heat cannot be reflected away, humidity builds under the umbrella. I have ordered the Six Moons Designs Silver Shadow Mini and will let you know if that works better. I am returning the cheapie I bought from Amazon. It did a good job of reflecting the heat off of me, but the handle of the umbrella was tiny and started hurting my hands after carrying for just a couple of minutes.

To open the Six Moons mini more easily, just hold the umbrella upright and let the canopy of the umbrella flop downward. You can gently open the umbrella then without having to lock each spoke individually. Let gravity help you out!

Man im hearing backpackers claim they are ditching their rain jackets for the umbrella. Im about to get me one! Today I actually visited a water park called Splashin Safari in Indiana and having an umbrella in my pack today would have been LOOOOVE lmao

😂😂 I should have mentioned it in this video but I still will carry my rain jacket.

Def a must out here in the West! In higher sun exposure and more open spaces this piece makes a lot of sense! Other downsides besides the brush (like I hit in Joshua Tree) and the hail that you mentioned would be the wind. I wouldn't feel super comfortable having it out in high winds. So the piece is still finicky and can only be used in certain scenarios but can be clutch in those situations. Nice vs. video Taylor!

Thanks man! Wind for sure could really destroy these umbrellas!

Good job thanks I always love alternatives from the main stream. I am sure it depends on the umbrella you buy from Walmart but did you get any feeling how the SMD or GG would stand wind? If they are just as delicate as the cheaper alternatives then you are definitely right. You might as well buy the cheaper one. You mentioned fanny packs at the beginning is there a handsfree alternative umbrella to a "lumbar pack" 😊 good job thanks. I'm in Southern Utah and sun and heat is a much bigger issue than rain..

I have a Zpacks and the second one you showed is .5 ozs lighter than it. If o were a gram weenie I’d get the second one. LOL. I like the second quick deployment. Since it rains every time I hike. This is important to me LOL

I agree open hiking perfect, annoying in tight / regular trails too much ducking and dodging

    • @SouthernHike
      @SouthernHike  ปีที่แล้ว

For sure! I see using it more out west! Honestly on well maintained trails I haven’t had much issue.

Both these are based on the Euroschirm umbrellas. I believe Euroschirm even made some for these cottage companies and they are rebranded.

I’ve been using cheap CVS umbrellas for years (had a new one stolen from Crow’s truck - $10 wasted 😂). I just bought the Zpacks umbrella because I had a $10 off promotion. Good video. 🦑

Daiso has a $6 ultralight umbrella that fits in a pocket and comes in at only 100 grams (3.5 oz).

Nice. I have a cheapo one from Amazon that breaks down like the SMD. It's essential here in the West with the dry Summers. I usually bring it out when it gets above 80 deg. It's great when attached to a trekking pole with shock cord. I'll deploy it when needed and still able to use the trekking pole since it collapses so small. When stopping for breaks, I'll prop it up for shade. At camp, I'll do the same when cooking.
I've been looking into fanny packs for a bit. Which ones do you recommend?

      Nothing wrong with that!
I love the HMG Versa and also the CTG packs!

Fanny pack = XXL hip belt pocket, tell me I'm wrong.
I've had the GG for a few years and its still going strong. I have been curious about the Hyperlite version with the vents in the crown. I wonder if the really make much difference in higher winds or if you are still stuck with a sail you have to close.

What is the length of the umbrella that is not collapsible? Trying to figure out how much it sticks out from the top of my pack

The trick for the SMD design umbrella is…wait for it…ABRACADABRA! Try it! Would be a great short. May the light of luck shine upon your favors. 🍀🧧🌂🌈
