This is hardly fair. Belichick was already a 2x Super Bowl winner before he ever met Tom Brady, as the DC with the Giants, and his ability to _coach_ players and run games is exceptional. It's when you get to making coordinator hiring decisions, which he was good at in the past but really fucked up on in the later years, and in particular in giving him GM power, that you get the situation you saw at the end of his time with the Patriots. His bad decisions in those areas eventually stacked up enough bad-decision debt that his skills in other areas couldn't overcome it any longer. Is he still a great coach _in the modern NFL?_ That's a different question. League's different now than it was at the turn of the millennium. He WAS a great coach, that cannot be denied. But times change and everyone has a use-by date in this league.

Is he still a great coach _in the modern NFL?_ That's a different question. League's different now than it was at the turn of the millennium. He WAS a great coach, that cannot be denied. But times change and everyone has a use-by date in this league.
Belichick was an excellent coach. He was also a lousy GM. Eventually, BB the coach couldn't overcome the failures of BB the GM.
