- We visit Veste Coburg, a castle complex turned fortress and former home of the Saxe-Coburg und Gotha ducal family.
In this episode of Searching for History, Erin, my brother Sterlin and I, visit Veste Coburg or Fortress Coburg in English. Veste, is a synonym of the German word Festung, which means fortress in English. Veste Coburg once belonged to the Saxe-Coburg und Gotha family, and is located in Bavaria’s Upper Franconia, in Germany. The fortress is one of the largest castle complexes in Germany. It is situated on a hill to the northeast of the city of Coburg’s old town. The Veste Coburg had its beginning as a castle in the 11th century. Because of its strategic importance, the fortifications expanded over its life. In the 16th century when the duke’s residence was transferred to the Ehrenburg palace in the town below, it was solely used as a fortress until the 19th century. In the 19th century the fortress was renovated in an ornamental neo-gothic style. The majority of the outer fortifications were demolished between 1803 and 1838. Today, the fortress contains a museum featuring many exhibits, including an excellent arms and armor collection. Please join us as we explore the fortress, Veste Coburg.

Absolutely fascinating and beautiful. Thank you for taking us to this amazing place!
It is arguably the coolest intact castle-fortress in Germany. Thanks for watching!
Good information about the Veste Coburg , with wonderful Underground music.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Added to my bucket list for my next trip to Germany. Not too many tourists and not crowded!
I cannot recommend Coburg and the Veste Coburg enough! It is definitely not on the english speaking tourist trail. If you have not seen it, we also have a video on the town of Coburg: th-cam.com/video/fjUDx-BdAsg/w-d-xo.html
We love a good castle and the etchings look very cool. They're not something you can see everywhere.
Yea, Veste Coburg has some pretty cool exhibits.
