The racist notion in this country that black people can't swim is so ridiculous; Anybody can swim if they take lessons not being able to swim has nothing to do with your race.
All stereotypes about black people are based off an evil white people committed. The swimming stereotype originated int the 1950s and 1960s when integration began. White city governments began closing down public pools and beaches that were easily accessible to blacks in order to avoid having to swim with blacks. Then they made jokes about the fact that they were destroying pools in black neighborhoods, ergo "black people can't swim, they don't have pools in their neighborhoods". They did the same thing with watermelon during Reconstruction 100 years prior.
What birth that notion was a lack of widespread access to pools in black communities. So that notion wasn’t based off an inability to swim because you’re black but lacking access to swim facilities to actually learn how to swim.
