Only weird part was it showed $529.00 on site with discount, but charged $538.00, not sure why the $9 difference but not worrying about it! We've avoided 30 amp hookups just for the reasons you stated, now we won't be worrying about it!

    Soft starts work. We use them to start giant 150hp electric motors at the plant where I work (electrician). They greatly extend the life of the motor and mechanical assemblies because it starts... soft, rather than abruptly. I see no reason why they wouldn't be equally effective starting an RV air conditioner 👍

    Two 15,000 BTU/h (2.5 ton) not that much actually. If they are on 220, should be less than 30 amps, if they are 115v, then more. (The voltage determines the amperage.) Soft start devices (not new to the air conditioning industry). They give the motor winding's a bit of a torque boost. And yes, they will make the motors last a bit longer, (less harm to the winding's with the boost.) We use these in home air conditioners all the time. (I am an a/c contractor) Good choice buddy! Never thought of using them on my RV a/c unit. Gonna do it this week.

      @@johnhershey4010 That's interesting. I never checked. Generally one horsepower requires 12 amps at 115v. so these would be rated at 2.5 horsepower. One unit would probably actually draw less than the expected, maybe 21 - 25 amps at 115v. I'm going to check my unit and see. John and Mercedes should check using a amp probe just to see how close to the 30 amps their getting. (Hotter days draw more current than cooler days.)

    • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
      @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cooling capacity of a Coleman Mach 15 unit is 15,000 BTU/1.25 tons. These are single phase 115V appliances, consuming a hefty 14.8A/1,702W while operating. For reference, microwaves are typically 1,100W, and blow dryers are between usually 1,000W and 1,500W.
      The issue is that these units require upwards of 60A to start. The LRA, or locked rotor amperage, rating for these units is 61A! (Not all of this comes from supplied power. Otherwise, starting on 50A service would prove problematic at best.)
      Soft starters significantly reduce the in-rush current from the supply. This is what makes it possible to start the unit on 30A or lower service. From experience, I'd estimate that peak current at start-up is 20A or less with the soft start installed.
      So, soft starters minimize tripping circuit breakers and enable the use of air conditioning on low current supplies (30A and possibly 20A or 15A depending on myriad factors, such as generator surge capacity, etc.).
      As far as the A/C units themselves, optimized starting current delivery greatly reduces starting time. This, in turn, reduces the amount of time that electrical components such as wiring, circuit boards and motor windings are subjected to maximum current, thereby extending the life of the unit.
      I've installed soft starts on the central air conditioning units of most of my customers. To my knowledge, all are still operating, and that with some of these units pronounced as being on their last leg by companies looking for system replacement revenue. Needless to say, I'm a big proponent!

    • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
      @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnlane9432 One horsepower = 746 watts (6.2A @ 120Vac nominal)
      The load at start-up determines peak start-up current (LRA, or locked rotor amps, for air conditioners), so current draw at start-up varies widely.
      The Coleman Mach 15 units that the _RV Odd Couple_ are running consume 14.8A while operating. So, almost 30A with both operating simulateously...no matter the temperature. The total energy consumption (kWh) would be higher for hotter days as the units would cycle more frequently to maintain the set temperature.
      A useful exercise when installing soft starts is to record start-up current using a clamping amp meter on one leg of the supply (line for these single phase 115V units). Measuring before and after installation quantifies the effect of the particular soft start module.

    Yet another powerful video! John, I haven’t seen you that excited in a long time! You and Mercedes are so enthusiastic about this it’s got to be the next best thing to sliced bread. We have two ACs but one is a 15 amp and one is a 13 amp. We realized that if we were going to do any camping in our home state (Texas) we had to have two ACs. You know our situation but I am going to take a look at this anyway because it does open many more opportunities in terms of RV Parks and I have been brainstorming about how we can still use our fifth wheel. I do have one question and it’s probably one that most people would already know but if you end up parking your RV long-term where you have to pay for your own electricity are you saying that this would cut down on that bill because you’re using a lesser amp to plug-in? I loved seeing little Sagey pop in and out of the video. Have a good week guys, I sure appreciate you!

      In two words: "Horrendously expensive!" Great if you're a truck driver and can claim it as a business expensive. Thankfully much more affordable alternatives are available for RVers. My go-to solution for RVers is a dual-hose inverter portable air conditioner. A third of the cost, highly efficient and they stow away when not in use. A 115-volt inverter mini-split is the alternative solution I recommend.
      Three great things about inverter air conditioners are:
      1) No high in-rush current (the reason why soft start modules are needed). Inverter units gradually ramp up and ramp down.
      2) "Steady state" operation. Unlike traditional air conditioners that cycle on and off many times a day, inverter air conditioners ramp down to maintain the set temperature.
      3) Quiet operation. I just installed a 3-ton split inverter heat pump system (36,000 BTU) on my mom's house in central Florida. Not only is it super efficient (18 SEER), it's also whisper quiet. Normal conversation is around 70dB. The outside condenser is 52dB at full power!

    I understand you have a large RV, but I don’t understand why the installed ACs are rated at so many BTUs. Even for small RVs, I see ACs rated in the 15,000 range, and the BTU ratings for cars are off the charts.
    A 6500 window unit will more than adequately cool a nice size living room in even the hottest environment. (I’m prepping for hurricane season here in South Florida, and studying my generator needs.) So why these monster size units?
    Do they calculate BTUs differently for home and vehicle???

      Not so much the insulation as the fact that people don’t want to wait for cooling. So they put in as big a system (and two of them) as they can since they aren’t really expensive and they can tout the size in ads. One of those ducted to the whole trailer would cool it but it would take some time. Nobody wants to wait for anything anymore.

    Hello Guys,
    I like you guys and ran across this video and felt I needed to say something. This is not new magical technology; it has been around for years. This device uses technology invented by Nichola Tesla called a capacitor. The capacitor is like a battery that will store electricity releasing it quickly for the compressor to use.
    When an A/C starts (including your home A/C), the compressor uses 4-8 time the power it needs to run. This is when the compressor is drawing the most through the RV/Campground power supply. The A/C unit will have a component called a start capacitor that provides just enough electricity to get the compressor running. When the A/C is struggling to start up (shaking/vibrating), it’s called hard starting. One thing to note, more than normal startup noise is a sign that the start capacitor is failing, and it should be replaced before the compressor also fails.
    Adding a much bigger capacitor inline will make a boost of power available to the compressor without the resistance of pulling the power through the power lines.
    “Hard Start” kits are commonly sold as capacitor and a wired relay (with a time delayed reset). Most of the time you can by these as a kit made for the A/C unit you have so not cutting of wires needed. Do a quick search for a Hard Start kit for your AC on amazon and you will find them for under $50.00.
    Next: Wire nuts should never be used on an RV. The movement and vibration will cause them to fall off. When that happens, you have a bare electrical wire floating around a lot of metal parts.

    The parts are mounted inside the AC unit so there is no need for the weatherproof enclosure. There is also no need for other electronics or LED indicator lights. As I said this is not a new technology, I guess they are trying to justify the $300.00+- price tag to folks that do not know how an A/C operates.
    This is likely why they encourage the owner to do it themselves. The A/C guy would likely sell them the same thing for MUCH less.
    In short these do work and recommended but this product is insanely overpriced. Order the on you need from Amazon and install it. Or have an A/C guy install a Hard Start kit for you and it would still be way cheaper.
    DR

    This product claims that you can run both AC's on 30AMP service. Here's the thing, my coach has a switch between the front AC and the rear AC. The only time I can run both AC's is if I am running the 7000 W generator because it has a 20A dedicated circuit for the rear AC. So if I am plugged into shore power, how can I run both AC's at the same time? Or perhaps I am missing something. Only one AC at a time when plugged into shore power. Both simultaneously when running off the generator.
