You are very right. When Lalgudi accompanies, the audience were assured of two concerts in one. Rightly so, earlier singers used to give enough leeway and space to violin artists to explore more than what is usually delineated by the singer. I notice that Varadarajan is getting that space from you and both of you are giving lovely treats to your rasikas. Thanks.
Love the way you tell these stories. The perfect twist in the Tale was the superb bournvita! Of course, hearing these anecdotes and about your interaction with legends such as Lalgudi is what we come back for again and again!
I am 76 year old. I used to go to Bangalore to hear the concerts. Once I had been to Lalgudi Jayaraman concert in Raveendra Kalakshetra. Kambodhi was the main ragam. G J R krishnan was a small boy then. Itt was customery for Lalgudi Jayaraman to check the violin sruti aftr
after each item. GJR had not checked his violin sruti for one of the last tukdas. But Lalgudi Jayaraman started and found that GJR 's violin was not in perfect sruti. Then Lalgudi Jayaraman started to play the sruti looking into the eyes of GJR for 2to 3 minutes. We understood what a perfect taskmaster the great Lalgudi was. Long live Lalgudi bani.
Fantastic lessons indeed, at 7:24 when you mention this, it brings back that short video where you state “yeno thaano ellam velaikku aagaadhu, medai kedaichaa, mavanai, oru Kai paakkanum “, preparation and hard work, distilled and absorbed and locked in your mind after every single interaction with the Greats…. Thank you for sharing, we enjoyed the Bournvita too, whenever there is build up, like the Satyaraj scene from Brahma, u better watch out 😅
Sanjay Subrahmanya Sir🙏, me and my brother are great fans of your music. I am a sangeetha rasika and a student of the divine art. In this janma, i am blessed to hear music of stalwarts like you and more importantly get to understand your journey with all the mahamedais of carnatic music like Vid.Lalgudi Jayaraman Sir🙏. Thank you asnd namaskarams💐
I’ve been listening to almost all of your “On that note”. They’ve lot of Academic value, every music learners/listeners should know. They can be compiled into a study material for music learners/listeners.
Bournvita punchline was hilarious 😂 thanks for these wonderful stories that makes me explore more and more Carnatic music.. Rashid Khan raag yaman 👌 all you passionate, hardworking musicians are a boon to us.!
I intensely love Legend Lalgudi's Thillaanaa Compositions and rever him for his writing prowess too. I am quite obsessed with his Charukesi Padha Varnam "Innam En Manam ariyaadhavar Poal irundhidal Niyaayamaa?". OMG, it keeps disturbing me so intensely now & then - both the inherent melancholic character of the Raagaa as well as the lyrical content; I invariably stay overwhelmed listening to it or even when it keeps playing in my subconscious mind. That's the Power of our Music.
Your English is phenomenal and only surpassed by your music. This episode ended with a hilarious note on the bournvita. You are the ultimate Rasika 🙏👍😊🙏
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode of Lalgudi. Sanjay, great job. I have a request to you. Can you please do one more episode on Lalgudi . Lalgudi being the God of carnatic music , I felt maybe a 15 minute would do more justice than 8 minutes video so that you can cover more aspects pertaining to his solo performances which we all heard in 1980s and 90s ( you covered his accompaniment, maybe pl focus on his accompaniment for MMI and Alathur Bros also) besides some more anecdotes ( example lalgudi telling you once that many people did not like GNB experimenting which was innovation then etc) , you making a presentation on GnB I think once in 1990s where Lalgudi was also present ..what was his reaction etc . Thanks Sanjay in advance.. Nothing like hearing from you.
An amazing tribute to the ever- great legendary Lalgudi Mama on his birth anniversary, Sanjay and couldn't stop laughing where you ended on that note, keep rocking Master Blaster
Had a opportunity to listen to LGJ sir and Vellore Ramabadhran concert @ Gauhati, Assam. 1978/79. Brilliant concert and kindled my interest in music and still on fire … Thanks sir ..
That was such an interesting account about the maestro. Remembered hearing his Shankari neeve in Begada in Shanmukhanandasabha , Mumbai in the 70s and amazed and moved by his playing. 🙏🏼
I remember you coming and attending concert of SP Ramh. Lalgudi his Mentor was also there. It was in Sadguru Gnananda Hall. SP Ramh my collegemate had a Fantastic Male Voice. It was a Great Kutcheri. Some Evil Eyes, SP Ramh did not become Big. Those were the days. Few Days before his concert you sang, your hand mannerisms was akin to flying a kite(Kataadi). Few Girls were observing that, But you have reached Pedestal from there. Great Sanjay.
What a blessing to hear your experiences sir. Thank you. Feels like we are able to live these experiences with the great people like Lalgudi Jayaraman sir through yo
Suddenly Saturdays have become very interesting- all because of your On that Note , Sanjay sir.
Dear Sanjay sir , just luv the energy and enthusiasm you present the video. So nice you present it in English in parallel to Tamil - look forward to each of your videos. Regards
My grandmother was passionate about the violin. Somehow she and I found a way to go visit Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman at his house. Normally she doesn't say anything negative but when he asked her why she didn't play the violin anymore, she said whenever she took it out, her sisters in law laughed (joint family). So she stopped playing. He said but if they.laughed why couldn't you still play? She said yes it was like that. I asked her why she didn't complain to my grandfather, who was a wonderful person, and she said that was not the right answer. Thanks to her being open in front of Sri Lalgudi, I came to know about a private pain she might have never spoken about otherwise.
I simply COULD NOT LOOK AWAY when you were narrating these absolutely exhilarating anecdotes! It was so an interesting that every bit of the words you use to hold our rapt attention deserves to be penned down as short stories. Please consider this, Sanjay Sir; they will be INVALUABLE to our and the next generations. They really deserve to know about each of these artistes and ragas you speak so highly of in a way that will make them yearn for more. Education and awareness of the contributions of every Saint and legend ought to be taught in history lessons, or enjoyed/appreciated through such melodious stories (coveted audiobooks also, in your case). 😍
That was a most amazing recollection of your interactions with the violin genius Lagudi sir !! I still remember one amazing lec dem he gave to a packed Krishna gana sabha audience about nava rasas in music !! What a great man 🙏🙏
What a great learning experience sir. Every other Artist also should hear your ,very fluent, interesting and most assertive explanation on the importance of catching up with so many aspects of a Concert and other very important segments that should be noted and imbibed from many other Vidwans and Concerts Amazing characteristics, noted by you on the great Legend, Sri Lalgudi sir. Fabulous sir. We come to know of so many unknown facts. Remarkable 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏.As the most Senior Artist, it is equally satiating that you follow the same principle of identifying talents and giving them the apt space. Congratulations sir. So very mesmerising to read such great details on the young Vidwan of Hindustani Music. Indescribable delight👌👌👌👌👌🎉🎉🎉💐💐💐💐💐💐💐.
How can 8 mns - even with Sanjay Subramaniam's sincere charisma - be adequate to talk about LGJ, even if of a note about him? For in LGJ's music, a note never ends. It just diffuses into a preceding one and a succeeding one like air from one place to another and merges like water from river to ocean
we were lucky to have given rsam chdam papadam packed to sri lalgudi Jyaraman ( 1976 i think) when he was going by train from Paris to amsterdam otheres also shared sri Ramani and sri Palghat Raghu
I understand why Lalgudi sir asked for Arun Prakash Anna. He would not disturb the main artist and would mostly listen the concert on the stage. When we have heard stalwart like Trichy Sankaran sir from Pazhani school and other legendry artist Arun Prakash Anna would be a different approach. His silent layam is art many cannot master or even understand. I personally love GJR krishnan sir and Viji akka with Mani Sir or Sankaran sir anyone who competitively accompany them because they give so much scope for layam.
Haha. Bournvita! But as a person who has closely interacted with them, I can say Bournvita and Horlicks were very well made in his house. I would love eating in their house. Mami was a phenomenal cook.
Sir, with all due respect to your service to music, I have one small REQUEST 🙏🙏🙏. You have followers from different states and countries. We adore you and we would like to understand/absorb (as music lovers/musicians/students) everything what you speak, we love to hear every such beautiful experience you have been sharing with great heart. Kindly maintain the english at equal level as much as you do for tamil. I wish i could learn tamil, my request for you to speak english equally in your videos, please sir. Never mind, Pranamams!
Dear Sri Sanjay, I really enjoy each and every episode. I wonder I had the opportunity to accompany you on violin in this Kalarasana conceert at Rani Seethai Hall and the main was Kalyani if my memory is correct. I still remember that my Guru Lalgudi sir and TVG sir were in the audience.

Finishing touch 😂😂 could not stop laughing. Anyway you gave a tribute to the great musician on his Birthday I guess.👌👌🙏🙏
Lalgudi Jayaraman the Don Bradman + Sunil Gavaskar + G R Vishwanath + Rahul Dravid + Sachin Tendulkar of Carnatic violin.
Lalgudi - The greatest musician ever.

I had opportunities of listening to MMI with Lalgudi, Vellore & Alangudi in Trichy cutcheries, popularly known as Vannimarathadi cutcheries.

I have the pleasure of listening to live concert of Lalgudi Jayaraman at Maryland University in early 90s.
You are a great story teller too ! Captivating the audience through any medium you choose Sir ! Hat off to you

Heard that Sri Sanjay and Ustad Rashid Khan have given a gugalbandhi at Hamsadhwani hall in 90s. Hope Sanjay could talk about it sometime in future.
