      @@kanamenaito It absolutely is! I actually heard at least one of those exact poems recited in an anime recently and thought it beautiful but couldn't fully understand it. I've been casually trying to teach myself Japanese on and off as a hobby for over six years now, and your channel has taught me as much in four videos as a fortnight of grinding out lessons on some language app ever did! I would love more such practical videos like this, I feel the main barrier to fluency at this point (besides my difficulties with kanji) is my lack of any opportunity to actually SPEAK the language, and these poems fascinate me.
      But of course, you're not a Japanese poetry channel. I wonder, IS there a channel explaining Japanese poetry somewhere? 🤔

      Great videos! I think they are super useful for beginners!
      I think there's a typo in the last line of original lyrics of the song, which is: それを木の葉でちょいと被せ. I think it should be ちょっと, not ちょいと.

    I taught myself Japanese in late 94/95 for a trip I took in 95. (With a second in 97/98) The internet was not anything of what it is today, so what I had were tapes and library rentals. I was able to mimic Mora but did not know that’s what it was. I am THRILLED to have found your videos and thank you for inspiring me to refresh my skills. 🙏✨

    Just two videos and I am very impressed. I’m in my third week of an hour or so a day of three different well known apps plus TH-cam bits. I’ve studied enough to have already been struggling to put my finger of what makes Japanese ‘tick’. I knew from thinking about our alphabet vs theirs that how these consonant-vowel pairs are each single alphabet characters is somehow linked to how differently our brains are forming sounds into syllables then words and then sentences. After watching two- only two- of your videos, it’s so obvious looking back. I promise you, being able to do the moras in a steady even beat is a whole level of pressure. In reading, it’s hard to read every (new to our brain) character without a hesitation to recall THAT character. In speaking, it will be to have such perfect recollection of each word that you can feed them from brain to mouth at a steady rate one mora at a time. Haha I’m in trouble because I can’t play drums and I can’t hold a music beat and this language requires rhythm to an internal metronome. I am in deep trouble. Two months before Tokyo touchdown.

    The algorithm that brought me here nailed it this time. I needed this kind of language training! Thank you for making these videos!

  • @gaburincho
    @gaburincho ปีที่แล้ว +42

    Maybe it's interesting to point out that most of the lines start on beat (first mora), but the longest ones (せんーばやーまにーはたーぬきーがおってさ and それーをりょーしーがてっぽーでうってさ )starts "upbeat" (on the third mora), not caring at all if the accent of the word matches with the rhythmic accent of the music (which is usually very important in western music). Actually it's quite complex to be a child song, as also the beats of the bars change constantly (4/4, 2/4, 3/4 and so on....). おもしろい

    In my mother tongue Finnish we have long and short vowels and consonants, so that is not really been a problem for me in spoken language when learning Japanese. Although, when I have listened and sometimes tried to learn Japanese songs, separating words from each other has been challenging, the word rhythm is sometimes"off" or "upside down" to my ear. I believe it is due to Japanese having a pitch accent and not stress, and when been sang, the pitch is not always heard if the melody goes against it. As there is no stress, the word lines get blur to a foreign ear, if the melody and rhythm isn't 100% supporting the lyrics. Also in music a long note makes a short vowel sound long, which adds to the confusion, if the words are not all familiar.

    You say every mora should be the same length. But when you read at full speed they are obviously different. There are many rhythms that sound like dotted or triplet rhythms, for example. Similar to how English speakers say stressed and unstressed sylables as longer and shorter.

    It might be the quite slow rhythm of the children's song relative to most Japanese songs but, personally, that 3-three mora to 1-beat pattern often sounds a lot like English syllables in certain portions. I have to constantly fight my reflexive sound recognition. For example my mind converts 2 Japanese vowel sounds that span different notes into a slow, clear vowel dipthong. A specific example is the 3-mora line "ya-i-te-sa" sounds like 3-syllables to me: yai-te-sa, that "*a-i" sounds just like a slowly-pronounced English first person single-syllable pronoun "I." It's like my mind wants hears the slow beats and instantly tries to compress as many moras as possible into single syllables. Similarly, I'm intuitively processing the "mm" in "se-m-m-ba" as "sem-ba" only the "sem" is sung over multiple notes.
    I do have the ability to properly break it up into the actual moras but it's quite effortful. Thanks for all your help! Your explanations are so clear and your examples are great!

    Not gonna lie. Personally, the Romaji at the top of the hiragana distracted me so much. It almost felt like Furigana, which I still instinctively read unless I immediately recognize the Kanji. So, I was constantly fighting with my eyes to focus on the Hiragana. (I have long since abandoned Romaji as of a couple years ago, as I think using it to study beyond the first couple weeks will only stunt your growth in Japanese).
    Dont get me wrong though!!! I do love your Videos still Kaname! Also, this is an interesting exercise!
    すごく便利なチャンネルだと思いますよ!

      Well ig its there to make the video really accessible. I agree though, for a slightly different reason, in that while I can recognise all the hiragana, I'm not too quick with it, and having help prevents me practicing. Kinda why Duolingo's not been amazing. Its good, but often far too easy.
