  • Here are some tips on RV camping at Craters of the Moon National Monument, located in Arco, Idaho. Lava Flow Campground does not accept reservations and is a first come, first serve camping experience. This is also a primitive campground as there are no hookups. Water and restrooms are available around the campground in convenient locations.
Lava Flow Campground is the main campground within Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, located in central Idaho. This unique campground is nestled within a rugged and surreal volcanic landscape, offering visitors a chance to experience the area's fascinating geology up close.
The campground is surrounded by lava fields, cinder cones, and sagebrush, providing a truly one-of-a-kind setting.
There are 42 sites available, including some that can accommodate RVs (up to 30 feet in length), though there are no hookups.
    Facilities:
    Restrooms with flush toilets.
Drinking water (seasonally available, typically from late spring to early fall).
Picnic tables and fire pits at each campsite.
Reservations: All sites are first-come, first-served (no reservations).
Cost: The fee is modest (around $15 per night as of recent updates), making it an affordable option.
    What Makes It Special:
Dark Skies: The area is renowned for its incredible night skies, perfect for stargazing.
Proximity to Trails: It’s close to many hiking trails, such as the Broken Top Loop and Devil’s Orchard, where you can explore lava tubes, caves, and volcanic formations.
Educational Opportunities: The nearby visitor center offers exhibits and information about the volcanic history and ecology of the monument.
    Things to Know:
No Hookups: This is a dry camping site, so be prepared to bring your own power and waste management solutions.
Weather: Summers can be hot, and nights can be cool, so pack accordingly.
Busy Season: The campground can fill up quickly during peak season (late spring through early fall).
If you’re traveling by RV or tent camping and want an immersive experience in a volcanic landscape, Lava Flow Campground is a fantastic choice!

Hi Ramblers! We are Ron & Jodi; we want to share with you our RV travels in the Pacific Northwest. We RV up and down Washington and Oregon's scenic coastline and explore the east side of the Cascade Mountain Range enjoying the high desert.
We have lots to show you around in our own backyard to include our national & state parks in Washington and Oregon.
The best thing about owning an RV is that no matter where you go, you are always home. Still working full time and living residentially in the Pacific Northwest, we will take extended RV vacations outside the PNW. We have been to California and Nevada and have traveled east to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.
When we take a break from the RV lifestyle we travel to beautiful Hawaii and hop aboard luxurious cruise ships destined for Alaska and the Caribbean. We take you on our vacations for an immersive travel experience.
There are many videos to watch and help you decide how to spend your time in the PNW and beyond!

Nie one guys! We traveled through that area a few years ago when heading up to Yellowstone and Glacier. We drove through but didn't stay but put it on our list of places to come back to. We like to have reservations, but very often we are boondocking where reservations just are not possible. But we do always get apprehensive when coming into FCFS campground - especially at national parts/monuments - you just never know when they are going to be busy. Usually if we are doing something like that I look around for dispersed camping nearby in case they are full. So far it has always worked out - so we have probably spent more energy worrying about that it was worth. Day of week and time of day are key to as you mentioned. Great job showing the area features, and nice tips / warnings.. We look forward to more on this trip. Take care !

You can go look around and see if u want to drive to other locationsfor a 3rd day of exploring. Also if you are retired and you want a day to just do nothing 3 is fine especially if you love the night sky. We are more time restricted so 2 is perfect! Sometimes, not having a set plan can turn out to be the best way to go. I’m definitely a planner, but there are times when just going with the flow works out perfectly. The campsite looks fantastic, and the info you shared is really helpful. I’ve never been to Craters of the Moon National Monument, but it looks fascinating. The comparison between the volcanic rock flow and pudding was such an interesting way to explain it. The views and formations are incredible. Thanks for taking us on this journey with you.
