- A runaway freight car rolled through Regina, a result of human error. No one was hurt but city officials were not informed until CBC News started to investigate.

It would have been even more accurate to say runaway tank car. No need to scare the public to death by adding that it was loaded with asphalt.

I find it stupid how they are worried about kids and people getting hit by a runaway railcar. Quite frankly to be able to get hit by the damn thing you would have to be trespassing. Thus, if you get hit by it, you quite honestly probably deserved it. I'm not backing up the railroad, as this is a dangerous situation, but for other reasons.
MrWolfSnack crossings will usually have bells and some have gates which would have activated. Also it is very much recommended to look both ways before crossing at ANY time as crossings do fail.
TG for some reason your reply is not showing up here, did you delete it? Anyway I agree with your sentiments on train watching. I don't spend a lot of time watching trains or tracking loco numbers but have some idea of which locos are what in the local (up to 500km away) area and have a good understanding of the class of our state's passenger trains. So it's an interest not an obsession perhaps.
I have the same from some people about my radio hobby. "Why would you want to listen to X" is a regular question. TBH I don't listen to the local emergency services much any more as the extra noise gives me the shits now lol but still love my amateur and CB radio and since I have an active roll in the local radio room for the local volunteer fireys I tend to listen there so I know if they need help (lack of volunteers in that day on a busy day etc) and I'm up on what's going on if I do go in to help.
I don't understand gardening, I like roses and a few other flowers and fruits etc but couldn't be bothered much with the garden though I know a lot of people (my folks included) are avid gardeners.
Each to their own I guess, just some rather than writing it off with a "well I don't understand why you'd be interested but understand you are" and leaving it at that seem to be ignorant (and arrogant I guess) with "well I'm not interested in it so why should you be".

Maybe the mother featured in this video that was worried about kids playing around the railroad tracks, is speaking of her family's situation being homeless, and actually living in a railroad yard under some trees.The tracks are her kids playground.

We use a long handle to set the brakes, and put a chock on the wheels, just in case, but I have heard about people releasing the handbrake just to see what happens. 💙 T.E.N.

MrWolfSnack Never heard of a control box on a locomotive. Tracks have .5 Volts running up one rail and down the other. If wheels shunt the current, the *(o)T(o)* activate. No depending upon an engineer to press a "control box" button or a system having to detect a "control box" on a locomotive. Some mee-mool lights are also manually activated by a pull knob switch on the mee-mool light relay cabinet.

Right, so the rail car crossed 7 major streets on it's little trip. Even at midnight there must have been people on the roads who were stopped at the crossings, yet they didn't think anything of seeing a single rail car, on it's own, roll through the crossings??? Really???...
