This is frickin awesome, I read it years back and never forgot it. Never forgot Rawhead Rex either but this was special. Needs to be a movie. Thank you so much for bringing those memories back to me 🕊✌💛
you're a phenomenal narrator :) I know this story well as I read most of Barker's books and was listening to your audio to get into sleep faster... but you did such a masterful work I am now wide awake and feeling like the first time I read this story... kudos, my man!
I absolutely love this glimpse into the mind of Clive Barker. His (Imajica) imagination is incredible. This story boggles the mind in the best way. Easily one of my favorite short stories ever.
You wanna know whats crazy... My grandparents live in Novi Pazar... And on the same day that I went to visit them, my copy of the Book of Blood came in the mail...
You're welcome Jay. Thank you for your lovely comment. Having originally made them for my wife and now being divorced it's a great joy to me that so many people still find pleasure in them.
Oh gosh thank you Weston. :D It's been a learning curve from my first attempt (The Yattering And Jack) where I'm just reading into a mic, to this one where I'm more carefully measuring what I do and making more of a serious attempt at editing. All the lovely comments have been a joy to read. Thank you.
its very deserved praise Greg! My buddy who comes to town every few months and I would put on your work while we crafted and did DIY art projects and it created such a fertile atmosphere, much good work was done (especially Rawhead Rex). and THIS story, whoa. man, I agree with the commenter who said he had to re-read this story a few times before it clicked. it's a BEAR of a story to bring to life and make it make sense but by the end I was literally just sitting slack jawed and marvelling. thanks for the personal reply, best wishes m8!
@@jesserivera9704 Just imagine that for a moment: Clive barker writes a story in the mid 1980s as a burgeoning young writer, two decades later I do a series of recordings for the woman who, at the time, was my wife. And then those readings provide an inspiring background for the creation of various art projects which will themselves inspire and contribute to new works in people none of us will ever meet. Creativity and technology combined are just about the closest thing to Real Magic in this world.
@@GregBlackmanMusic you said it man... we all do our part, big or small, creator or appreciator, and it keeps the great cycle thrumming... from a character in house of 1000 corpses: "our bodies come and go but ART is forever." And seriously, I dont know if it would dampen your enthusiasm for the work, but you should seriously be doing this for a living. Commercial voiceover work that is. Anyway. Whatever you do, thanks for what you've done. It's a grey, chilly, overcast day here in Toronto, and so very beautiful. Oh so very.
one of my favorite BOB stories... have loved and analyzed the social message as well as clives realistic(in some ideals fantastical) representation as well as creative freedom given the culture and time it is set
Thank You 🙏🏽 really appreciate your time and effort uploading these stories Your voice is perfect 👌🏾 for narration Hope your wife is well kind regards KAZ 🇬🇧😍🥰💖👏🏾💕✌🏾😊🙏🏽🎉 xx 😘
I love this series. Just finished all your readings. Would you consider recording more Books of Blood? You have such a way with the material. I’m always drawn in by your interpretations of the characters.
I'm so glad you enjoyed them. I don't have nearly as much free time as I used to but I often think about giving another one or two of my favourites a read through. I always wanted to do Sex, Death and Starshine.
yea! so pumped for your latest work! btw: just so you know- the system that sends notifications for signed in TH-cam people who subscribe to you works. it's how I got here. keep up the good work, Greg.
Deep, meaningful-story following: a life amazed interest to listen in: good great CLIVE BARKER; I am fortunate to be able to listen as an be inspired to my own creative artistry-GOING UNDER: HERO THEME MUSICAL SONG BY ME WILLIAM WALLACE of WHITE RAVEN FOSTER N GRACE-MUSIC BAND: I LOVE TO LISTENT TO THESE STORIES..
Your narration is better than most of the professional narrators I've heard. I purchased The Scarlet Gospels on Audible, and the narrator was atrocious. Edit: This story feels like a metaphor for communism.
more of a metaphor for the somewhat stereotypical english view of the european east, but the underlying idea of this (sur)real ancient european tradition, fantastic, colossal and tragic, crushing and consuming the evanescent and troubled gay couple, is amuch more deeper, more ironic and more significant metaphor
My God these stories are hard to visualize.. I was right in my interpretation but I didn’t think I was.. (Spoilers) I knew they kept describing giants but I couldn’t rationalize where the bodies and people were. Turns out they made up the flesh like frame of these giants.. And these guys are chilling like they’re going to a football game or some shit..
There's a stunning fully painted comic book adaptation of In The Hills, The Cities which is well worth a look if you can find a copy. The series was called Tapping The Vein and they were comic adaptations Barker's stuff, mostly The Books Of Blood.
sorry to be such a mom, but after I listened I felt the need to say: NOT for under 18 yrs. or younger. plus forgive me! I'm absolutely ANTI CENSOR, it's just that some Barker is OK for teens who love horror and it's so much more literate than the scourge of creepy pasta garbage stories and I'm all for reading --- it's just that this particular story has such explicit sex scenes. I know plenty other C.B. stories do 2, but I assume this known because those stories are just...known because of movies being made from them. NE-way....go head & trash my mom wrning....I prollyl deserve it. love all u do, Greg.
Paul.A. WÏtte-Kerr I know what you mean. But given that I didn't put up a warning for the story Jaqueline Ess, Her Will And Testament which ends with the male and female killing each other with their sharpened genitals I didn't feel the need to put one up for a bit of entirely ordinary and consensual gay sex.
@5:45 Fun fact: Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails read this book & used that quote "stale incense, old sweat, and lies…” in the song "Sin”.
An excellent reading of one of the best short story of horror in the last 50 years. Thank you so very much!
This story deserves a film, its phenomenal, especially the grizzly animations in Tapping the Vein.

I remember first reading in the cities. I had to read three times till what was going on dawned on me.
Oh thank you… I’m not the only one..

Badassery!
It's a Cold War metaphor, yes? That's why Yugoslavia?
I had never thought of it that way but now you come to mention it I think you may be onto something there, Vincent.

Greg Blackman I didn't post because of gay sex-- promise. just hadn't listened to comparatives yet.
Paul.A. WÏtte-Kerr a well placed mom warning can be a wonderful thing 😂
I have never understood why people think that gorey violent horror is somehow more acceptable than sex.
