    A Japan classic. Nightporter is a beautiful and atmospheric song from a seriously underrated band.

    I borrowed this album off off a girl I knew in 1980 to record . This year in July we are celebrating our 40 th wedding anniversary. Not bad hey

    Japan had made so many artistic, desperate and romantic sad songs. I love this band very much. From Hong Kong.

    The woodwinds (bassoon, oboe and bass clarinet) were done by their extraordinary bass player, Mick Karn. I recommend Sons of Pioneers next.

      Yeh. I had read that he joined the National Youth Orchestra (UK) playing the bassoon but had to leave eventually as he had memorised the parts and couldn’t music. Amazing musician! I would like to know more.

    Japan were an outstanding band David Sylvian being the stand out member but the rest of the band went on to have great solo careers as well. They evolved over the years check out their first single don’t rain on my parade just to see how they grew as a band from beginning to the end.

    I guess the question to ask is, of Japan’s contemporaries, such as Duran Duran, Spandau, the Human League, Ultravox etc could any of them have written this song? Something so deep, so neoclassical, with its occasional middle eastern scales, with an oboe, a bass clarinet and a bassoon, combined with Sylvian and Barbierie’s exquisite piano and synth parts and David Sylvians haunting yet melancholy vocal. The answer is no. One of the most underrated compositions of the 1980’s. To think that just 2 years previously they were singing about Adolscent sex with juvenile intentions to then sing ‘the width of a room that can hold so much pleasure inside’ is quite remarkable. Great reaction and thank you

    • @DonHaka
      @DonHaka 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There is no bass clarinet or bassoon in the studio recording of Nightporter. Besides piano and synths, there is just an oboe (played by Andrew Cauthery) and an upright bass (played by Barry Guy).

    Beautiful song, one of the most haunting melodies of all time. He based this song on the movie ‘Nightporter’ starring Dirk Bogarde, which centres on an ex nazi concentration camp officer who, amongst other things uses a young Jewish woman as his personal sex slave. They meet by chance years later where he is working as a nightporter in a hotel. It’s quite a difficult watch but the song takes on a different feel after watching the movie.
