    Are you beginning to understand why we Boomers are so critical of today's music?

  • @puffyd58
    @puffyd58 ปีที่แล้ว +950

    In response to your question, I don't think they were ahead of their time at all. It was an era filled with massive songwriting and vocal talent . . . the Temptations, the Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles, the Supremes, Lenny Welch ("Since I Fell for You"). . . and on and on and on. The Righteous Brothers were just a major component of the greatest musical era in America's history, in my opinion. I've had some success as a songwriter and whenever I get a chance to advise young songwriters, I tell them, "please, don't listen to your peers or what's on the radio now. Most of it has terrible melodies, terrible lyrics. So much of it is just awful. Go back and listen to the music of the '60s and '70s if you want to hear great melodies, UNIQUE artists who are readily identifiable . . . not clones of each other." Thanks for the great response . . . to this performance and others. You rock.

    These singers didn't lip sync. No auto tune. You hear their voices. That's true of many singers back then.

    • @bettyrose959
      @bettyrose959 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find it funny. Autotune is just a digital pitch shifter, no different than the analog pitch shifters of old. Been used in vocal recordings since the 1940's. One of the uses that most people know is Alvin and the Chipmunks. It's not something NEW.

    • @mikeadamec6844
      @mikeadamec6844 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Having lived through this era, I have to say that lip syncing was very common on TV at the time. I attended a few TV shows like Dick Clark's Saturday Night show in New York and it was obvious that the performers were lip syncing. I believe that this performance is being lip synced; because, it sounds exactly like the original version on 45 vinyl that came out in late 1964. Having said that, it is still the most outstanding ballad of the era. These guys were absolutely phenomenal.

    This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

    I wouldn't say that they were ahead of their time, they were a product of their time. This song was produced by Phil Spector, a major music producer who changed Pop music. One of his signature songs, along with this one, was 1963's "Be My Baby" by The Ronettes. He also produced Tina Turner's 1966 "River Deep, Mountain High". His signature "wall of sound" can be heard in these songs, as well as in this song by The Righteous Brothers. Phil Spector produced music starting in the late 50s and well into the 70s. Phil Spector's life is also a Hollywood producer/drama/murder story.

      If you haven't already, try listening to Canadian singer/musician Loreena McKennitt, she does her work in differing Celtic styles of music and is known to travel to different areas of the world to study the Celtic influences to expand her knowledge, she writes a lot of her own words, uses lines from well-known writers and poets of the past, and some traditional songs, she is great on the piano, harp, and accordion-her voice is unreal, and she is one of the few people who are as good, and sometimes better live-and a lovely person in all senses of the word-I agree about the era you mention, as I am the same age as you.

He came back from WWII, escorted his sister to a local dance, saw her across the room, and started dancing. He told her Navy date, who hevoutranked, that he was taking her home. Nine weeks later, they married. A live band to dance to was their favorite outing.

    They also do an incredible version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" and Bobby Hatfield does an amazing version of "Summer Time" from Porgy and Bess. Plus NOBODY does a better version of "Unchained Melody" than Bobby! (Pink suit version) Enjoy. Love your reactions.

    This song was used in many movies from the 80s!
    But only one movie in particular brought this song to life!
    Do you know which one?!
    Give up?!
    It's TOP GUN!

    As one born in 1950 and raised with the greatest of all music... let us not forget the WALL of SOUND background...no matter what you may think of Phil Spector, he was a genius in the music world. As for Bobby, his range was and still is beyond today's voices... one more to listen to is SUMMERTIME...again his range is perfection and the soul of that song will stir even the most hardened Blues Brother.

    I am 77 and I do believe we had decades of the finest rock and pop and country...during our rra.
    Two of the greatest were the Bee Gees and the Righteous Brothers
    ...too long a list to grant them my shout out. When I first heard the Righteous Brothers sing ...You Lost That Loving Feeling, I tjought I was listerning to a paur of Soul Brothers. Don't know why our generation was so blessed, but who cares...we had them, we loved them, and they are ours....but we eill, and have, shared them in following generations. Beatles were ok. My two listed here are just a small number of some of the greatest!! ❤❤❤

    Say Hey, Sebs. I watched your jaw drop open at points as you were knocked out by the magnitude of this performance. This song and recording is considered by many to be the greatest pop/soul song of all time.
    These guys were night club singers who crossed over onto the pop/rock/soul charts when they released this masterpiece production by the infamous producer Phil Spector.

I note that the reactor can really relate to this song.. I wonder if he could say the same of any song like 'WAP' or whatever piece of crap going around today?

    Bill is a bass-baritone. Bobby is a tenor whose voice often reached the register of a countertenor (equivalent to that of a female contralto or mezzo-soprano.) Arguably the most perfect contrasting of voices in a group or duo in the history of music. You can thank Phil Spector for the production values. Oh, and those are LIVE mics. No backstage manipulations. The clear definition of "blue-eyed soul,"

    You're getting into some of my first musical memories--I'm 65. The early sixties were an incredible time for vocal music: folk, rock and roll, R and B etc. Also I think a great time for studio production (Phil Spector etc). I don't listen to a lot of contemporary pop music but it would be hard to believe that there is much to equal this period. Pick anything you want recorded by Aretha, Elvis, Marvin Gaye, on and on and on.....and btw THANKS for doing this!!

    They were indeed great! Your reaction was spot-on! If you haven't already checked out the Everly Brothers I think you would appreciate them too. They were named the greatest vocal duo in the history of rock by Rolling Stone. They infused country with rock creating the country rock or rockabilly style. Two real life brothers whose voices blended so perfectly & with such synchronicity they sounded like what I imagine angels must sound like. My favorite love song is the Everly Bros "Let It BeMe".
