    Such great advice! Honest yet strategic. Most advice recommends "spray and pray" but thats exhausting and feels fake. I feel connected to your advice about "going narrow, a mile deep" only exerting effort in people that feel interested/interesting. Thank you sir!

  • @danerose575

    This was great! One way I built my team of mentors was simply asking who was the best and then asking them if for any amount of money they would be there to advise me when I needed them. Sometimes I hired them to work along side me. Sometimes I volunteered for free to help them. But it's surprisingly how many great people are never asked for this kind of help.

    I'm old enough to remember when "an ask" used to be called a "question." What I don't know is why this terminology changed.
    I also struggle with networking, and never knew why until I was diagnosed with Asperger's. I do not know how to make friends, and group of people terrify me.
    At work, I did that. "What is Ruby on Rails?" The response was, "Really? Why do you work here?"

    • @trevorpirtle4411
      @trevorpirtle4411 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not asking a question, it's asking a favor.

  • @MetalMario137
    @MetalMario137 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So basically.....
    Finding a way to make legitimate conversation with strangers to make new friends? Got it.
    In seriousness, as much of a common-sense approach that this is, I always had the negative impression of "networking" as what you described in the introduction of your video. I let the common impressions of society cloud my thought. Thank you for breaking that mental wall Tim, so I can re-discover making new friends like when we were kids.

      This is the idea for MVP; or Minimum Viable Product. The MVP has a utility. You can talk to people about a book (idea) to gauge interest levels before you commit yourself to the process of writing. You have to know you can handle a deadline like a boss, but even in networking you can pitch a virtual idea to get feedback to work into your design.
      Some people take this into aggressive business tactics, where you sell your book before its written, but I'm not personally on board with that.

    Summary of notes taken - these are not word for word and I have put my own comments in
    - **Go long and narrow** - develop deep relationships with specific people who occupy domains in which you are interested in - maintain relationship over a long period of time
    - **Don't start with an ask**
    - **Be generous** - "who can I buy a round of drinks for"
    - This is for in-person events: Get at least one point of social contact for the person you are trying to meet ("**get a social stamp of approval**")
    - Approaching someone and asking, "I'm here for such and such, do you know anyone who I would enjoy meeting" - this gives you a very appropriate and likeable agenda. One isn't asking for much and the person who connects gets to be the person who knows people.
    - Talk to the moderator
    - Snowball with this technique, if it seems right carry, on the process by asking to be referred to more people. - develop a gaggle of people.
    - **Be humble and be honest.**
    - "I'm nervous about coming to you"
    - Obviously only if you actually are but you get the point.
    - Volunteer work and high-end exclusive events are great way to meet people.
    - State relevant interests.
    - **Have the agenda: "I'm here to learn"**
    - **Don't give your pitch if it isn't asked for, tell your story as people ask for it.**
    - Don't pretend you know.
    - Be truthful about being deep in the ignorance pool when you are.
    - Ask questions - ask for clarifications
    - **When you get to the point of asking, start small.**
    - You don't have to sell your soul. You can network with people in terrific positions who are also like-minded and that you enjoy.

    He is so right with buying people drinks - in 2001, to find more business I would go out with my Telcom friends who usually knew IT managers which is my would. We would go out for drinks and they would tell me their problems. I would offer to solve it for them. Sometimes worked sometimes did not. The worst that would happen is my friends would look good to their clients and we would have a good time. I am still excellent friends with one of my former clients from that Era.
