    What a tremendous assist from you, Greg. I was stuck and frustrated by my lack of imagination drawing the same one-dimensional elements. You put it together. I'm very appreciative! TY!

    Another informative and beautifully produced video Greg - thank you! I struggle with design ideas. I can craft to a certain extent - but the designing part often eludes me. In metalsmithing 101 way back in the day, our instructor tried to teach us how to abstract. Sometimes I just have to let my mind wander a bit and sketch and then go from there. Thanks again!

    Hi Greg 👋🏻
    Your video has me really thinking about the possibilities that are outside of mainstream jewelry making here in Australia. I excelled at Art in my High school years, since then it has been put to one side which is so unfortunate. I joined a Lapidary club here and Australia doesn't produce silver, but gold, diamonds and all those amazing stones like smokey quartz are possible to find. If you want silver, either buy it or go out fossicking for the coins and rings. Some items that people find are from all over the world and have found there way here. I love sea glass as well. Ironstone is not really used which I think is such a waste. My big plan is to spend half the year in Australia and the other in America for my retirement. Creating sculptures in clay is my favourite medium. Textiles will be my next venture as the world and it's idea of fashion changes❤❤❤

      Hello Sis Qui, Thank you for sharing. I always am interested in other peoples stories. Life is so interesting. I am glad that I can start you thinking outside the mainstream. This is what it is all about. I know you will have an interesting time. Textiles and jewelry can be an exciting combination. Keep your mind open!!! Keep on watching. Thanks again. Greg Greenwood

    really enjoyed all the textures/shapes/depths and craftsmanship. if a beginner had $1000-$1500 and wanted to get some material to get started what would your recommendations be wire/sheet and any online sources would be really helpful.

    • @greggreenwood4628
      @greggreenwood4628  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello D&L, Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the video!
      For the beginner question. (This is a big question ). It is always difficult to decide which direction to start and this depends a bit on the student's interest. I would start by concentrating on learning to bend, forge and solder wire. Do not worry about sheet metal. Get comfortable with the wires. Learn how it bends, how far one can forge a wire before it splits, how to solder small wires to large wires. Design within the "limitations" (By the way, there are no limitations) of the wire. Buy some SS wire, getting 12, 14, 18 ga. square and round. Approx. 10 ft. per gauge. This will be about $600. Also, get copper wire in 10 to 20 ga. This will be for practicing forging. Only buy smaller amounts as you need them. Your learning curve will determine what to buy.
      THIS IS IMPORTANT. Work for a couple of months only working in wire.
      Do the same for sheet metal. There are many more techniques using sheet, so start by learning how to saw correctly and with ease. Use copper sheet to learn on. Saw, Saw, Saw!! File , File File! Learn to burnish the edges of sheet so you don't have to polish the edges. Learn to solder seams and to sweat solder. Start fabricating simple boxes and 3-D forms. Get comfortable with the sheet.
      The idea of only working on the wire and/or sheet metal for a long extended time, is to get to know the characteristics of the metal. Know what to expect from the metal. Once a student understands what the metal will do, then the student can start to design pieces that will use the metal to it's full potential. If one skips learning the basics, the student will always be handicapped and will feel and look like an ametuer.
      As for any online sources, Of course, start with all of my videos. Use them as a base and a spring board. There a other instructional videos out there that have different approaches to the subjects. Find the ones that fit your personality.
      Wow, I sure hope this helps you and makes sense. Thank you again for your questions. You are always invited to ask. Good Luck. Greg Greenwood

      @@greggreenwood4628 Thanks a lot. This is really helpful. We definitely want to focus on learning to use the tools. Once we've gone through a bunch of metal hopefully in the end be able to make some fun projects with the family. You videos have been so helpful and inspiring. Cheers.
