Encanto is the Alto representation Disney was lacking.
Carolina and Mauro got to voice Pepa and Felix respectively in both the English and Spanish versions which is super cool.

Regarding the back placement you notice in the cast - us Latin Americans tend to sing like that in general 😊 Check out Carlos Rivera or Alejandro Fernandez, there's a lot of that back placement going on

If you look up Jessica Darrow and see her sing “Chief Cook and Bottle Washer” you’ll see just how amazing she is. She’s a musical theater nerd!
She kinda has the same feel as Pink in the jazz version of the song and I love it so much.
Honestly I like the sound of "Pepa" with her back placed voice for the track. When you showed us how it would sound otherwise it actually sounded very off to me, maybe just bc I have listened to it so many times but either way it didn't seem right to me. Lol

I think the back placed voice might have to do with the fact that the setting is very Latin, and many of the characters speak in a linguistic fashion indicative of that region. Since they try to keep their singing voices similar to their speaking voices, it would make sense that they sing that way as well.
I think it also works well for Meribel as she's one of the younger members of the family, and kind of the smart, intellectual sort. She's still sort of a 'child' when the movie begins.
Speaking of which, I'd love to see you do Meribel's voice like this since you talked so much about her way of singing in the song reviews.

You should check out some of thed non-encanto songs by the voice actors; I know Adassa and Jessica Darrow, at least, both have songs up on youtube.

Have you listened to Lucy St. Louis as Christine in Phantom? She's got a really light and straight tone to her voice, and she's actually able to pull it off.

I suspect the back placement is because of the Latin American Spanish accent. It's backplaced in itself.

I've heard Darrow's Jazz version and thanks to you; today I just heard the Punk version of Surface Pressure. Though both are done vocally fabulous, I'm going to have to choose the Punk version. Lyrically it fits sooo much better into the punk genre because of the song's message. If I were a DJ I'd play it on the radio.

You should listen to the version of "No resolve" has several Disney covers but I feel that this is one of its best songs.
I really feel like Darrow's vocals were tweaked in post. Not saying that's a bad thing. I just think they wanted her to hit a lower tone more consistently.

I am a bit late to the party, but Pepa and her husband voices are Colombian and uhh some regions of the country have an accent that does what I think you are describing. Look for video clips of "Betty la fea" and you'll see what I mean

I actually think it’s because they’re singing in English? Idk how to explain, but we’re told English needs to be spoken backwards. Or Atleast I was told if I speak forward I sound like I’m opening vowels too much and it’ll be hard to understand.
