A stationary orbit (geostationary in the specific case of Earth, hence "geo-") depends on the mass and rotational speed of the body you're targetting, and it has nothing to do with the diameter. In fact, for particularly fast-rotating gas giants, it might technically be *below* the surface, or at least in the atmosphere, making it impossible to achieve. On the other hand of the spectrum are slowly rotating bodies where the stationary orbit would fall beyond the Hill radius and are thus impossible as well.
For the low orbits, there's a minimum distance as well, which on Earth is the Kármán Line, some 100 km above ground. This depends mostly on the atmosphere density at this place, which you can calculate from the pressure at ground level and the atmosphere's scale height.

Nice episode Devin, watching this episode reminded me of some footage taken by my aunt and uncle who toured around the States and they visited a Space museum which had moondust, astronaut suits, actual engine parts and booster cones from rockets, and some beautiful scale models of shuttles and the Saturn V rocket. Also shown some great mappings, footage from the Apollo landings and such, can't remember where they said this was but the footage was over 1 hour long, they filmed it separate on a different camera and used phone footage.. but it was really excellent. Reminded me of Star Wars when you was in flight, which yeah.. I'm a fan.. original trilogy and prequels only by the way.. along with Rogue one and Obi wan.. but yeah I'm a fan.. reminded me of Tatooine that planet.. could almost see Luke Skywalker there. Great episode mate, well done 👍

Thanks for this.. and the tools & checklists!
Thankfully, as a long-time Kerbal Space Program player, orbits, transfers, rendezvous and docking, are no mysteries for me...

Oh yes if you're a Kerbal person you're far more knowledgeable about orbits than me. Again, this is just a temporary tool until real mechanics are added later

@@devinhorner2358 - Understood.. so proper orbital mechanics are definitely planned for inclusion?
That would be pretty cool.. most games, movies and TV shows constantly get even basic orbital mechanics wrong.. (for instance, accelerating towards the planet, to drop out of orbit... WTF?!?)

@@Garryck-1 I don't know to what extent, but it looks like there will be something. There was a huge discussion on the Discord server a few days back by people who are super passionate about orbital mechanics so I can't imagine they would let something slide that is TOO offensive

    Good effort mate 👍

I was wondering why an ex-Navy person keeps using the imprecise and more confusing terms 'left' and 'right' patterns, rather than the not-open-to-misunderstandings terms "port' and 'starboard'. But then you mentioned an aviation background too. *That* would explain it!
(Sometimes it amazes me that you flyboys don't get lost more often, using such subjective terms as 'left' and 'right'...)

Have no idea if I will be interested in the game, but am enjoying the videos anyway

Thanks. It may be easier to decide if it's interesting to you next year when the Alpha comes out. More game mechanics will be in place to make it feel more like a real game.

This game seems very ambitious. I don’t know if it can be pulled off with current technology.
A bunch of ships with a bunch of players on them, all exploring the same galaxy a.k.a. server. Yikes, crash city.
I’m not trying to be negative. I would love to play this game in the way that it is being presented, but holy crap it does not seem that possible. Am I missing something?

I hate third party tools, they all break immersion and makes a game boring after a while , because they suppress the sense of discovery and break the satisfaction of having learned things by yourself.
