I remember Girl Thing. I liked Last One Standing as well. Never understood how Last One Standing wasn’t a big hit & only got to No 8 in the charts. It was the perfect song for girls in the age bracket of 5-10 to listen too. Girls of that age who did hear it absolutely loved it! It was the ideal cheesy poppy song of the late 90s early 00s. I believe they were marketed wrong, and managed wrong. Why did they spend so much money on sending them to Paris & having photographers following them around, instead of getting them to record music first & getting song after song out there. Giving the public something to actually listen to, and giving the public a few songs from the band before they send them all over the place taking their pictures. Then when they started taking off in Australia, the label didn’t let them promote their singles over there (where people actually liked them).
I have to say, the whole marketing Girl Thing as the next big thing did work as far as I’m concerned. I was always looking for a new band to obsess over. They put ‘Last One Standing’ and an interview with the five of them on a free CD with Smash Hits and I have never forgotten them! I probably made Simon Cowell half of his millions single-handedly! Lol
What happened to Girl Thing evokes memories of The Knack (My Sharona) who were touted as The Next Beatles, Marky Mark was supposed to be the next big Rap Star after Vanilla Ice and although he had only One Hit Record and sadly enough Loleta Holloway who sang on Good Vibrations only got Paid less than $3.00 US Dollars. The most heartbreaking example was when Debarge were signed to Motown around 1982 and were in all of The Black Teen Magazines as The Next Jackson Five not knowing that The Family settled a Six Year Lawsuit just last year. They made their TV Debut on American Bandstand (The US Equivalent Of Top Of The Pops), then their National Network Debut on Motown 25 but I knew they weren't going to make it. James messed up on The Choreography and Motown was notorious for it's brilliant stage presence. By 1984 they were at their peak with Rhythm Of The Night then in 1985 they slowly went downhill.
When Gareth Gates Sang "Unchained Melody sometimes I wonder if these guys don't realize it was a Standard from 1955 which was Bobby Hatfield's of The Righteous Brothers crowning achievement. When he fell on hard times he sold his Share and didn't make a dime when it was featured in Ghost. What was so sad was that in 1981 he and Bill Medley sang Rock & Roll Heaven on The American Bandstand Anniversary Special and in the audience were folks who would die within the past 38 Years. Dennis & Carl Wilson (The Beach Boys), James Brown, Teddy Pendergrass, Maurice Williams (Earth Wind & Fire)
Kavana did my head in during The Big Reunion. Seemed to me he was quite jealous of the rest of the lads because out of all of them he was probably the less successful. He seemed a little bitter still, years later & he didn’t seem to be thankful or grateful for another chance of singing his music & doing a tour.
Lots of trauma, honestly. He mentioned to Evie that he dreaded singing that song every night at gigs. I think he lost the ability to enjoy singing and performing a long time ago. I don’t think he could understand the other guys’ willingness to jump in. He’s the only one that had to lean on his one hit to survive, whereas the other guys were just doing this for fun. I feel for him but he was a train wreck to watch in this series. I hope he’s doing okay.
Fifth Story reminds me of "Projects" like "Arcadia", "The Power Station" and even "Lucy Pearl" thinking it was going to be successful. They did well but Fifth Story was so 180% from these Groups. I felt so bad for Girl Thing, they were acting like "Girl Group Divas" before they became successful and they didn't.
Girl Thing were Five Young Ladies who were painfully naive who thought they would be the next Big Thing and it didn't happen. I wish somebody could sit them down and say alot of Girl Groups didn't make it. Ivory Soul (A White Girl Group Who Sang R & B), Innosense (The Group Britney Spears started out in) as was Wild Orchid (The Group Fergie was in before she was in The Black Eyed Peas). Now Aubrey O'Day formerly of Danity Kane (Diddy's Group) was The Mistress of Donald Trump Jr. before his Father became President.

They were a burlesque act who worked with everyone from Christina Aguilera, Carmen Electra, and even Pink. They got their start at the Home of Christina Applegate (Married With Children) that Megan Markle's Father worked on that she visited regularly. They were "Salaried" Employees, nothing more or less. Nicole also didn't make "Bank" off of Eden's Crush (US Popstars), and the Girl Group Girlicious were also lead to believe that they were going to be big and they weren't. Robin Antin really thought she was the second coming of Paula Abdul in terms of choreography and it didn't happen.

As for Girl Thing losing out on Pure & Simple it's a hard fact. Remember in Dreamgirls The Girls saw a White Act have a hit with Cadillac, then One Night Only was supposed to be a comeback for Effie but it wasn't. Also someone should say "Try Being A Black Artist and see your song do moderately well then a White Act sings your song and it becomes a bigger hit. The Velvelettes who were next to the Contours one of Motown's overlooked Groups who had two of their Recordings "Needle In A Haystack & He Was Really Saying Something" be bigger Hits for White Acts.
