did running around the castle have anything to do with the costume or can i skip that. I read some where it might be important but I'd like a second opinion.

Equip the corresponding title with the Costume ability, and fight monsters until you level up the title with SP points and unlock the costume.
It's a shame the other tales costumes aren't ingame. Though I don't think I would want that carta minigame to get anymore difficult lol
