Why your glaze tests might not match your full mixes

  • If you use an immersion blender to mix your tests but not your full sized mixes, and you find the full mix comes out a little flatter, this might be why!
The preview pic is exactly the same glaze, same application, same firing. There is only one difference between all the test tiles here, and that's how they were mixed.
This is something Ryan from @midnightceramics told me a while ago, and I only just got around to testing myself.
The glaze is my new FirstFive Floating Base (with 2.5% titanium) with 1% tin and a tiny amount of chrome.
As you can see here, the difference between sieved and pureed is pretty drastic. The titanium and tin start off fairly clumped, and the more they break up the greater their visual effect on the glaze.

Thank you so much for doing this test. I would never have guessed that it made that much difference. There is always ingredients left behind in the sieve so its good to know the immersion blender works so well. Thanks again. Love your videos.

i use my immersion with a beater arm for my 5000 gram batches instead of a drill these days, but i expect to see differences as you say from my tiles to large batches. for tests i use a 100 gram batch of powder and an old fashion pallet painters knife and wet some powder on a glass slab. i do siv twice post mixing with that immersion with a beater arm on it. love this content. ty
