Thank you for acknowledging a major misconception about this scene. A lot of DBZ fans seem to think Trunks was truly stronger than Vegeta here, based on Trunks’ dialogue to Krillin, and how the fight was dragged out in the anime. The juxtaposition of Goku’s transformation along with Cell’s into Grade 3 was meant to showcase that Vegeta most likely could have achieved Grade 3 as well. He didn’t because he knew it would be useless. Trunks completely overlooked this possibility due to his inexperience. He actually did worse vs Cell in the manga than Vegeta did.
Technically he is on a pure power level, but otherwise his speed is too piss poor to make it even matter that it comes off as weaker. It's like all the gains of Broly but none of the perks while keeping 100% drawbacks.

My theory was that Vegeta DID go grade 3 when he was firing the final flash, since he knew speed wouldn't be necessary. You can see his muscles bulk up just like grade 3 and the lightning is similar to the thunderstorm that happened when Trunks transformed. That also explains how the Final Flash was actually able to damage Cell despite Vegeta being far weaker.

No way bro. He legit came back from a single cell when he blew himself up. In Gohan's final Kamehameha it actually shows the final cells vaporizing. Vegeta was aiming at the earth, if he hit cell full on, not angling the blast up, he would have probably finished Cell right there.... With the earth right along side it lol
It has "worked" in so far against the actual Cell it did its job obliterating a large portion of his body just like Gohan later. Had Vegeta just continued to press him not allowing him to regenerate or worse starting jumping the shit out of him with Trunks and number 16 it might have been a wrap for Cell. Problem is attacks like that and the continuous Ki blast volley ought to be used strategically as part of a combo with multiple follow ups that could end with yet another full power energy blast like a final flash, big bang, masenko, Kamehameha etc. Or even another energy wave volley and against a severely weakened enemy you could finish the combo and erase them from the map with either technique you just have to not be a cocky arrogant bastard gawking and cackling at the result of your best attack giving Cell enough time to regenerate, and instead keep up the pressure and utilize the techs correctly. Also there's a huge plot hole in the Cell saga with Cell's regeneration ability. It comes from Piccolo's Namekian DNA yet unlike a Namekian it comes at no energy or stamina cost? Whenever a Namekian regenerates their Ki, and stamina take a huge hit yet regeneration doesn't seem to effect Cell's power negatively despite being word for word bar for bar Namekian regeneration. Huge plot hole, regenerating from that final flash should have put a huge dent in Cell's power and since it wasn't exactly "near death" it can't be explained away by a Saiayan DNA provided Zenkai boost. Final flash is fine it's Vegeta feeling himself that is a magnet for taking fat L's his moveset is fine he just needs stop feeling himself everytime he's got some sauce to cook with and finish off his enemies ruthlessly and efficiently like the original villainous Vegeta would have.

For the Super manga readers, Perfect Cell's characterization I find, just thinking about it after watching it here, is weirdly similar to Frieza's current arc right now - less about galactic conquest or destruction, more about relishing the power and catching a good fade before asserting dominance.

Android 16 was being done so dirty in this arc bruh, I'm glad he was the one to eventually be the trigger for Gohan's ssj2 transformation. I always saw 16 and Gohan as foils to each other: both like nature and did not like to fight, but were made to due to their respective fathers. The difference being Goku cared about nurturing Gohan, whilst Gero just saw 16 as a weapon.They also showed more strength and potential than their comrades who initially assumed they were the weakest ones in the group. And of course the bird flying away when Gohan snaps...16 loved birds and is seen with them the entire arc. Ppl talk about how weird it is that it was 16 of all characters but i actually really liked the fact that it was an unconventional and surprising character to be the straw that broke the camel's back. instead of it just being Goku or someone else.

He also got turned into a head because of his desperation in stopping cell by self sacrifice. So Gohan is looking at the result of his failure. It never works but credit where it’s due, this Final Flash was the single strongest blast attack fired in the arc. Cell HAD to move away at the last second or else he was going to die. It’s Vegeta literally putting EVERYTHING he had into that blast. …Still wish the KD ratio on it was higher than Big Bang Attack though.
I think Cell could blocked ect. He just didn't want to. Cell isn't even showing half his power there. Just Goku powering up shakes Vegeta. Think that was half of Goku's power. And cell was much stronger. Definitely Gohan's Kamehameha and Cell's were stronger.
This is easily one of vegeta's worst L's he's ever taken. What makes this L in particular horrible is the fact he was on the highest of horses and could have ended this arc in one hit. But, that sayian dna kicked in as soon as cell said, "This isn’t even my final form." And then he proceeded to get utterly humiliated in two hits and got turned into a puzzle piece with the way he perfectly fit into the ground. I'd like to imagine that Trunks was trying his hardest not to smile the whole time.

That's a really good point about Goku teaching Gohan the mistake that Vegeta didn't teach Trunks. Really solidifies the difference in the two's parenting styles. Also cool because it shows that Goku and Vegeta are still pretty evenly matched in terms of combat instinct - they both came to the same realization about the muscle mode. Vegeta really reminds me of Bakugo (or vice versa, since Vegeta came first) as they are both anti-heroes who get a rap for being hot-headed and narcissistic but are actually really competent fighters at the end of the day.
If they fought together (Vegeta ,trunks) vs perfect green. They would of won. Have trunks in his bulk hulk form and charge up a big ass key blast at cell well Vegeta uses his speed to knock cell into the blast. Or something like that they could of thought of something
The only reason Cell survived was because his ability to regenerate. Akira Toriyama himself has stated that if Cell let the Final Flash hit him straight on instead of jumping out of the way at the last second, then Cell would've been killed. Cell actually should've been killed when Goku blew his head off, but Akira Toriyama somehow forgot about Cell specifically stating that he could regenerate as long as his head was intact.
Yeah, you really do hate to see it, but it seemed to he part of Toriyama advancing Vegeta's character development in his own way. Vegeta's cold nature, inability to even interact with his own son correctly and Trunks being basically just a hardboiled version of Gohan (soft as hell in his heart of hearts no matter how heroic his actions are). Led to them both losing because they didn't train together the same way Goku and Gohan did. Vegeta had to watch his son cough up blood and die in front of him in order to reflect on his negligence, how he's done nothing but ignore and belittle him while he's sacrificed and risked everything for him and the rest of the squad. Vegeta had to lose something to realize what he had lost. Just like Majinn Vegeta fighting Goku with Goku always responding that Vegeta should convince himself of his own monologs before preaching to someone else because there's no way he believes what he's saying. Only after multiple attempts to get through to him about the danger to his own wife and son and actually feeling Buu's energy snapped him back to reality. Same shit and you hate to see it.
He’s still trying to make that move work to this day. Just let it go. It’s so bad that even Vegito Blue couldn’t get anything out of it. Thinking about it, his was actually the most pathetic ok. It progressed from capable of destroying the earth to kicking up a puff of dirt in Super. Now that’s character development.
Cell had potential for deeper development. Maybe even some growth, Vegeta style. Cell becoming a frenemy to the Z fighters makes way more sense than Frieza becoming one.

It never works but credit where it’s due, this Final Flash was the single strongest blast attack fired in the arc. Cell HAD to move away at the last second or else he was going to die. It’s Vegeta literally putting EVERYTHING he had into that blast.

This is easily one of vegeta's worst L's he's ever taken. What makes this L in particular horrible is the fact he was on the highest of horses and could have ended this arc in one hit.
But, that sayian dna kicked in as soon as cell said, "This isn’t even my final form." And then he proceeded to get utterly humiliated in two hits and got turned into a puzzle piece with the way he perfectly fit into the ground. I'd like to imagine that Trunks was trying his hardest not to smile the whole time.

That's a really good point about Goku teaching Gohan the mistake that Vegeta didn't teach Trunks. Really solidifies the difference in the two's parenting styles. Also cool because it shows that Goku and Vegeta are still pretty evenly matched in terms of combat instinct - they both came to the same realization about the muscle mode. Vegeta really reminds me of Bakugo (or vice versa, since Vegeta came first) as they are both anti-heroes who get a rap for being hot-headed and narcissistic but are actually really competent fighters at the end of the day.

The only reason Cell survived was because his ability to regenerate. Akira Toriyama himself has stated that if Cell let the Final Flash hit him straight on instead of jumping out of the way at the last second, then Cell would've been killed. Cell actually should've been killed when Goku blew his head off, but Akira Toriyama somehow forgot about Cell specifically stating that he could regenerate as long as his head was intact.
I don't think he said head, rather he could move his core around or it moves instinctively to where it'd be safe.

Yeah, you really do hate to see it, but it seemed to he part of Toriyama advancing Vegeta's character development in his own way. Vegeta's cold nature, inability to even interact with his own son correctly and Trunks being basically just a hardboiled version of Gohan (soft as hell in his heart of hearts no matter how heroic his actions are). Led to them both losing because they didn't train together the same way Goku and Gohan did. Vegeta had to watch his son cough up blood and die in front of him in order to reflect on his negligence, how he's done nothing but ignore and belittle him while he's sacrificed and risked everything for him and the rest of the squad. Vegeta had to lose something to realize what he had lost. Just like Majinn Vegeta fighting Goku with Goku always responding that Vegeta should convince himself of his own monologs before preaching to someone else because there's no way he believes what he's saying. Only after multiple attempts to get through to him about the danger to his own wife and son and actually feeling Buu's energy snapped him back to reality. Same shit and you hate to see it.
All too true, Vegeta's flaws really did so.much harm to his progress and his family's lives.
